do i need to play half life 1 to understand half life 2?
I haven't even seen gameplay for either of them in my life so i don't know anything about it

whilst playing half-life 1 will help you understand half life 2 better, you don't need such a firm grasp. basically all you need to know is that **** went down at black mesa, they punched a hole into an alternate universe or some **** , and bad aliens came out and enslaved the entirety of the human race in 7 hours.
there, now you can play number 2, and understand just about everything. except for the in-jokes. you'll need to play HL1 for those.

I recently downloaded both HL 1 and 2 from Steam a few days ago and I would advise to play both in order. You pick up little bits of information and references to the earlier games and it is also easier to understand and the plot feels more complete.

You don't need to to understand the general plot, but it would be advisable to because it enriches the story in so many ways.

You should get Black Mesa source if you can't find a copy of HL1 (It's on steam for €10, or your regional equivalent). Black Mesa is the original game with all of the enhancements of it's sequel.
