Pirates used to be the Achilles's heel for an overseas empire in the 18th century.

Now they're just ******* stealing cargo ships in Africa.

Those pirates were from all kinds of nationalities, ya know. The most successful pirates, in my opinion, would be the huge asian pirate fleet under the rule of a chinese woman. That's how you get **** done

Barbary corsairs were given ships and cannons by Ottoman Empire to do whatever they wish as long as they don't harass their coasts.

Actually, before the peace treaty between Britain and Spain, pirates were often used and even trained and given ships by each side to plunder the enemy. Captain Henry Morgan ( now most people know about him only because of rum) was a Governor and an imperial officer whose job was to cause as much problems for the Spanish royal fleet as possible, after the peace treaty, Piracy became illegal and the E.I.C. was founded and actively hunted pirated and sentenced them to death, as piracy was the onl life most of them knew, they continued, and after being branded traitors by the British and spanish royal fleets, they attacked both and thus became " Fearsome bandits" before the treaty they were more known as " brave sailors"

what a turn of events eh?

well, that's what you get when ignorant leaders who consider themselves too smart to learn anything from the worlds' history.

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity? It's doing the exact same thing over and over again, expecting it to work out better.
However, the pirates were more or less betrayed by the royal fleets.
