It's a pretty well known musical. I can't remember the name though. I know it's about some puertos moving in a neighborhood and the gangs collide with the white gangs or some **** like that.

I did watch it in school when I was 14 so I might enjoy it more now but, back then, I couldn't stand it. Also I'm not the biggest fan of musicals.
User avatar #222 to #221 - waterbottlemanboy (07/01/2013) [-]
I like musicals, but a lot of them are bad, and cliched, my favourite is Sweeney Todd, so good. And Chicago.
User avatar #223 to #222 - bobthedilder (07/01/2013) [-]
Also liked Todd and The Producers now that I think of it, there's probably more that I've seen and liked just can't remember them.

Actually, the greatest pirate of all time, Ching Shih, protected the towns she forced to pay tribute, had a strict code of honor among her large cadre of pirate brethren, and put those that abused the innocent to the sword.
User avatar #94 to #39 - schneidend (06/30/2013) [-]
Pretty awesome, yo.
#151 to #39 - Rascal (06/30/2013) [-]
Why did you use "actually?"

That still makes he brutal, violent, and merciless...
"forced to pay.." -- Brutal
"...to the sword" -- Violent
"Strict code" -- merciless

Sounds like a typical pirate to me and deserves no recognition of 'greatness' - Because pirates weren't great. They were and are douchebags.
User avatar #157 to #151 - greenstrongworld (06/30/2013) [-]
Yes but the authority back then basically did the same things that you described. So dashgamer here, used the word "actually" because it was ironic that a pirate was doing good things.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
#206 to #39 - Rascal (06/30/2013) [-]
True. In fact the majority of the pirate community had a very democratic system and a strict code of honor. But the same could be said about some inner city gangs. Although not as prominent.
#177 to #39 - Rascal (06/30/2013) [-]
I've noticed that people who use the "consider the following" picture end up being a bunch of pseudo-intellectual morons.

Pirates used to be the Achilles's heel for an overseas empire in the 18th century.

Now they're just ******* stealing cargo ships in Africa.

User avatar #11 to #2 - reican (06/30/2013) [-]
Actually, before the peace treaty between Britain and Spain, pirates were often used and even trained and given ships by each side to plunder the enemy. Captain Henry Morgan ( now most people know about him only because of rum) was a Governor and an imperial officer whose job was to cause as much problems for the Spanish royal fleet as possible, after the peace treaty, Piracy became illegal and the E.I.C. was founded and actively hunted pirated and sentenced them to death, as piracy was the onl life most of them knew, they continued, and after being branded traitors by the British and spanish royal fleets, they attacked both and thus became " Fearsome bandits" before the treaty they were more known as " brave sailors"

what a turn of events eh?
#150 to #11 - Rascal (06/30/2013) [-]
Sounds like the united states and the taliban.

well, that's what you get when ignorant leaders who consider themselves too smart to learn anything from the worlds' history.

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity? It's doing the exact same thing over and over again, expecting it to work out better.
However, the pirates were more or less betrayed by the royal fleets.

Actually, regular sailors were even more brutal and murderous at the time. They were also practically slaves. The reason most sailors turned to piracy was in order to get some freedom and cash. Some traded, some looted, some demanded protection fees, but very few were the "rape everyone, take everything that isn't nail down, kill everyone and burn what's left" kind of pirate. Heck, some of those ships even had their own little democracy with an elected captain. Some were more civilized than the people back on land.
User avatar #136 to #107 - hudis (06/30/2013) [-]
I'm guessing it's a similar tale to the popular view of vikings. Vikings weren't primarily raiders and killers; most were farmers and merchants and explorers. Pillaging is an effective way to supply your men, though, so a minority occupied themselves with that while the majority only did it when they had to - but it's the victims of the raids that wrote the history books, so it's fair to say that the impression of what both vikings and pirates/privateers were all about is a bit skew.
