how awkward would it be for someone to walk in on you with a lighter heating up a spoon

Why the **** doesn't it denature when I take a hot shower?
#99 to #17 - pocoloco

Because the shower is not hot enough and probably also because due to the pressure and the local application heat can "get in" the sting much more efficiently than by just running water

It might be because the shower's not hot enough. The proteins in the mosquito's saliva cause the itch, and they are destroyed at temperatures above 113 °F (45 °C)

It's actually the release of histamine that causes the itching as it sensitises the sensory nerves creating the itching sensation. The histamine is released from mast cells that have been activated by IgE antibodies binding to the cell membrane. These IgE antibodies do this in response to binding to the mosquito chemicals.

Wouldn't a spoon above 133 °F burn your skin?

Eh, it's about 118 degrees outside in pheonix today, and plus you'd only touch it to your skin for a short while.

No. The air doesn't have the same temperature as your skin. Your body regulates it's own temperature and it doesn't allow it to get too high. That's why you sweat. At 45 degrees Celsius your brain cells would have already died out. After 40 degrees they begin to die, sending all kinds of abnormal signals, this being the reason why people with high fever hallucinate. But a hot spoon brings a large amount of heat in a a very short time on a pretty small surface. The heat transfer is way faster because of the small area the contact takes place.

Scratching actually distracts your brain from the itching by stimulating the area with a stronger stimulus. The itching inevitably returns

Because it's logical to leave Alaska to go to a university in Texas.
Also, if you're going to leave your state, go to a more renown university.
Don't travel half the continent unless you have good reason. I'd only find this really logical if he has family in College Station or Byan.

Yes I have family there, no I'm not going to college at Texas A&M, and I'm just visiting my mother in Alaska. I have lived here for thirteen years, and I have stayed up here for three months out of the year for the last 6 years. It's pretty safe to say I know my mosquitos (and citronella for that matter)

He might have family in Texas that he stays with while in school. The cost of flights back and forth would probably be cheaper than a dorm at a closer university.
