What is Dwarf Fortress?
User avatar #4 to #3 - echobase ONLINE (06/28/2013) [-]
Dwarf Fortress is a game. Said game is hard. Harder than the nipples on a blind lesbian in a fish market.

Imagine, if you will, two parallel universes. Everything in them was the same until around 1980. In one universe, Universe A, the game designers continued on their path, focusing on graphics and realism. That's what we have today. Universe B, on the other hand, is different. Game designers went for control of and depth in the games they created. Now jump to 2006, and imagine that one of their games made the jump to our Universe. That game would be Dwarf Fortress.

Dwarf Fortress is hard. Harder than a Catholic Priest at a playground.

Why is it so hard, you ask? The game details everything. And I literally mean everything. Who was birthed from whom, what they did. You can get as intricate as biting off a goblin's toe and having the toe stuck to your tooth. You can then remove the tooth from your mouth, and use it as a weapon to kill the de-toed goblin. You can go into a village at night, and gouge the eyes out of every child, and then ripping out their tongue. You can sleep easy, knowing that for over 20 terrified children, your face was the last thing they will ever see.

You can lock infants into small rooms filled with rabid turkeys (dogs will most likely kill the child). After 11 years of fighting them and being pecked, you can remove the child from their vault, and with careful application of magma and water, melt off all their skin and fat. Once they're peeled, you can coat them in steel. Once they are coated, you can have them murder their parents, just to turn them into a cold, soulless, calloused killing machine. You can use these dwarves as the forefront of your Spartan project.

You can take and breed mermaids, and once they give birth, take their children from them, butcher them, and turn their bones into rings.

If this sounds disgusting, horrible, and vile, know that this is only the beginning. You can do ANYTHING you can imagine. Anything.

Heres a quick question, I have no idea what anything is and there doesn't seem to be a legend. What is a U, and how do I interact with teh U?
User avatar #17 to #15 - angryberdz (06/28/2013) [-]
Okay, for this game, you have to imagine EVERYTHING in this game from it's ASCII character ( +, *, A, U, $) to an item, landscape, or Character. The "U" is a Human. To interact with said human, press "k", and target the Human. a Chat list shall appear, ranging from Trade to the location to the Capital to Quests. Once you speak to a NPC, I HIGHLY suggest you take a Quest, select "Service", and a Quest shall be given. Happy Slaying!

tip. download MasterDwarffortress
its a whole huge addon. which can run on faster fps. in the settings you can make everything as it would be in the normal one if you want to try it normally first.
it also comes with graphics packs. to make it more easy for new comers to get into it. of coruse the ASCII isnt bad at all but the extra help isnt bad either. also it comes ith Dwarf hack. in it if you type ssense it opens up an isometric view that lets you see it more or less a bit more 3d. also pleasing to the eye. experiment with settings and enjoy

If you haven't played fallout 3 , with a ton of weather , hunger , injury , gun condition , weapon damage mods . You are missing on some of the most intense gaming experiences out there. It gets to the point that a Raider can one shot you . So you need to use stealth, etc. I absolutely recommend it , you will play fallout like it should be played , like a post apocalyptic wasteland should feel. ******* scary.

if I wanted that kind of realism I'd play ArmA, which is a simulator, not an action game
User avatar #141 to #140 - tomtomvdp (06/29/2013) [-]
I used to play ArmA a lot , it's more enjoyable if you play it in a group communicating . It's not particularly hard , but it requires that you develop some strategy before you start to shoot , that aside. I don't know if i misunderstood you but i think you just called Fallout an "action game" which is not , fallout is an RPG . It plays like an action game because Bethesda decided to bend the franchise that way making it more approachable to more "casual" gamers , and i don't mean that in a bad way . All those mods that it mentioned will turn fallout from and "action game" to it's well deserved place as a hardcore rpg, and believe me if you never try it that way , you are missing an amazing experience.
#145 to #141 - tazze (06/29/2013) [-]
wow, wow, wow, stop it right there criminal scum, I said action game because some people think ArmA is an action game, Fallout 3 is a (debatable) RPG/Action game, and I say debatable because for me almost anything that isn't a pen and paper RPG is not a real RPG (even though I find The Witcher 2 quite praiseworthy), in Bethesda's work you can expect to find one thing, heavily scripted, immersion breaking NPCs which don't seem to care at all about the character, as well as lots of bugs and awful animations, they don't care about the details because they think a huge open world will make up for it, and addressing your mods, turning Fallout 3 into a combat simulator with its original "RPG" components would be awufl for me, I don't like a game forcing me to choose a course of action, I do what I want, and if I want to go into some raiders' camp guns blazing, I ******* do it, I am a diplomat when needed, or the first one to charge, but I don't have the patience to use stealth and I certainly don't have the will to make strategies, I like to let my brain relax when I play by using reflexes and insticts alone, than you very much

That's probably why, in the Dark Souls community, you are referred to as casual until you have no trouble with any of the bosses on NG and regularly take part in PVP, there is a bit of leniency when it comes to NG+, except for the gargoyles, they are pretty damn easy even on NG+++++++

If hardcore refers to multiplier, then yes. It makes sense that 2 people are fighting for fun on what looks like similar terms.

A hardcore game, something like dark souls, is more like fighting 100 waiters with no faces, and then reaching the cube of fun at the end of a hallway.

Why does everyone say Dwarf Fortress is the hardest game? Sure its got a steep learning curve, but seriously, theres A LOT of rouge types like that, such as Cataclysm and Space Station 13. Even with that learning curve, once you are past it. its pure fun and enjoyment, and the learning and dying just becomes part of the game.
