Why does no one use irony correctly?

Which makes it ironic.
Or does it?

This was one of the best debates we ever had in our AP English classes. We were talking about Alanis Morissette's song "Ironic," and how every line in the song had absolutely nothing to do with irony, just coincidence. The quiet kid in the back of the room raised his hand and said, "Maybe it was meant to be a song titled 'Ironic' that actually had absolutely nothing to do with irony. In that sense, it might just be the most ironic song ever written." The teacher just had this dumbfounded look on her face, slumped down in her chair, and gave the kid a free A on his next exam.

That's what made the song ironic. That was on purpose. Nothing in the song is actually ironic, because that makes the whole song IRONIC.

That's exactly what the kid said. The teacher had never thought of it that way, and neither had the other students.
