IE is needed by some applications. (very rarely)

For most people, deleting IE is fine. But for some it will break other apps.

EG, league of legends needed it at one point to work correctly. Not sure if that's still the case, but I always leave IE installed just in case. (obviously I don't have it set to default)

Not always, some applications open the hyperlink using a line like "iexplore [URL HERE]", instead of just opening the URL

It's very rare though so, you're basically right
