I am British, it was £2200 for my first car at 19. I wouldn't be mad if it wasn't a 1.1l 106, the model without any fancy extras (or even basic extras). To make matters worse, for some reason, a 1.4 fiesta would have been cheaper to insure by £800.

THE **** ?

im £1800 at 17 for my seat 1.4, got my first no claims bonus now down to £700. its not the bad if you just dont claim

Thats exactly my issue now! its just too expensive, ive been passed now for 8 months and havent driven a car since the day of my test simply because the insurance is crazy.
#86 to #20 - Rascal (06/26/2013) [-]
I hope you mean £2200 for a year, right?
Because i pay ~£500 each month (5000 NOK), for a Audi A3 SB 06'.. That is £6k a year.. So yours is cheap as **** ..

At 19 my frist car was a 1.8 focus zebec and it cost me just over £1500 for the year! Only gone down since!

They judge how reliable the car is, If it's a little ******* then it's more likely to crash.

1: then why didnt you get the fiesta,

2: i just got a quote for a 1.2 polo at 17 and its 900 pounts, the best trick is ad your parents and grandparents to the policy , you're the main holder but the more "older" people you add the lower it goes, also the black box helps got 400 off and have ot have it in for 3 months
#126 to #28 - JewishNazi (06/28/2013) [-]
I did qoute a Fiesta, that was another £800 on top, and both of the folks are on the policy! And if I am not mistaken, black boxes can rise the price if you drive at night. Just a rumour, but I work nights, that'd be pointless.

still.. 212 hp is a lot.. I drive a Mercedes E230 from 1996.. 150 bhp I pay around 10 000 Nok a year. 1600 dollars. The car is worth 30 000 nok ( 5 000 dollars) sounds fair? NO it isnt.. And its the "chapest" incurance too.. So... You got my feels
#123 to #15 - Rascal (06/26/2013) [-]
Well, after men turn 25, insurance rates drop significantly, at least in the U.S.
User avatar #21 to #15 - oceanmist (06/26/2013) [-]
Well considering an acura TSX weighs over half a ton more than a cobra, and has less than 212 BHP, and is safer and more reliable than a homebuilt replica, can't blame them.

You should try what I do, I have a 1997 ford explorer thats falling apart listed as my primary car, and then a mustang and a bike as extra cars. Its much cheaper, and I never drive the explorer.

I've got a 1.4L 90hp Peugeot 206, with me, dad and mum on the policy, for just a little over £1,000 p/a. Should add I'm 19. Myself and everyone I know my age are with LV because they're a lot fairer than anyone else. No ****** little black box either - **** any company who makes you install one of those, why should you be told how to drive. It's just a constant reminder that if you do something wrong then you'll be charged more.
User avatar #50 to #37 - technotoaster (06/26/2013) [-]
This is exactly why i dont have a car, motorcycle insurance is on average 5x cheaper than car insurance, so i'm doing my bike test, plus no one drives in my house so i couldnt have anyone else on my insurance.

I don't have a car, what's the point in getting car insurance? To help pay for the damage in case you're in an accident?
I don't have a car, what's the point in getting car insurance? To help pay for the damage in case you're in an accident?
User avatar #90 to #89 - ronyx (06/26/2013) [-]
Yes.
#95 to #89 - Rascal (06/26/2013) [-]
depending on the amount of coverage you have you can replace broken parts on the car if it's in an accident or replace it entirely
#101 to #89 - Rascal (06/26/2013) [-]
The problem is you're legally obligated to have car insurance so when you're young/poor it's a big part of the expense of a car.
User avatar #122 to #89 - curveball (06/26/2013) [-]
You literally have to have it, it's not optional. And if you're a male aged 16-24, bite the pillow and prepare to cry, because your rates are going to be ridiculous.
User avatar #92 to #89 - gurtol (06/26/2013) [-]
That and it's illegal to drive on public roads without insurance. Here in Britain if the police catch you without insurance they will take your car and either crush or sell it.
User avatar #97 to #92 - joshlol (06/26/2013) [-]
Actually in most cases you are just fined, and the fine is a maximum of £1000 which is likely less than you pay for insurance.
Still better to be insured though for your own peace of mind. I wish you could drive around uninsured and just pay for your own **** if you crash.
User avatar #99 to #97 - joshlol (06/26/2013) [-]
Oh and of course 6 points on your license, not good.
User avatar #100 to #99 - joshlol (06/26/2013) [-]
and if it goes to court you can lose your license and be fined £5000. I have a friend who was caught driving uninsured and got away with a £200 fine and no points though.
#84 - sloot (06/26/2013) [-]
Im 21 and I have never been in a car accident, I have never gotten a speeding ticket, and I get good grades... my car insurance is next to nothing....
User avatar #103 to #84 - joshlol (06/26/2013) [-]
What country are you living in where your grades affect your car insurance?
User avatar #112 to #103 - mattdoggy (06/26/2013) [-]
In America i know they are a big influence. I've seen kids with straight A's get policies a few hundred dollars cheaper than kids with C's and D's. Most companies take notice of simple things in their clients, like gender, car color, and grades. A girl driving a light blue car with straight A's can pay next to nothing on their insurance when i guy driving a red car with F's will have to bend over backwards to be able to make a single payment.
User avatar #125 to #112 - joshlol (06/26/2013) [-]
That's kind of a shame because not being booksmart doesn't necessarily make you a bad driver.

User avatar #113 to #98 - mattdoggy (06/26/2013) [-]
Depends on the company, in general though you need to report that or else you won't get but a few pennies on the payout if you wreck.
