He knew what he was doing. Avoiding media confrontation and capture isn't an easily avoidable thing ESP when you're dealing with this caliber of trouble. He probably isn't even in moscow right now, he's somewhere far. Away from media, and already has a new name. Wired accounts, a non existent address and house. And wears sunglasses EVERYWHERE. Either way dude is a totally patriot/ Passive Badass.

Edward Snowden is a man who leaked government info to the public about the NSA's authority and willingness to search people's phone records and emails and other various private information. He fled to Hong Kong for a while but I believe he's headed towards Russia right now because it's unlikely Putin will expedite him due to US and Russia's poor current relationships. He's being charged with espionage for releasing this information.

Secondly, these ARE global affairs. He revealed information showing that America has systematically gathered data not only on US citizens but on foreign nationals and hacked into computer networks and stole data from foreign governments.

Spotted the NSA agent.

But seriously, **** you. The reason why I'm concerned if the government is snooping on my facebook pages isn't because I want to keep my weekend outfit pictures a secret outside of my friend's group, it's because here in America we were guaranteed this little thing called the FOURTH ******* AMENDMENT YOU DAFT ******* TWAT!

The people of a country should never be afraid of its government, it should always be that the government is afraid of its people. They are in service to us, we pay the ******* bills and they better follow the ******* rules that we've all agreed to.

In case you're unclear of what the fourth amendment represents, it is the nifty little amendment that prevents cops from just breaking into your home or car or check your internet history. Any representative of the government or policing body needs to have reasonable cause and a search warrant to do so. If you think Snowden is a "deuchebag traitor" then you are a sad excuse for a citizen.

I don't care if it's free or for money. It is MY information, it is MY life, and it is MY privacy. Just because you don't value YOUR privacy doesn't mean that you don't have a RIGHT to it.
If the government isn't playing fairly they deserve to have something like this happen.

You're ******* deluded.
I'm not paranoid that the government will find out what I do, I'm not that interesting. I'm more than ******* pissed that the government has overstepped lines and snooped in any way, and especially without "just cause".

If the government starts breaking its own rules it ceases to be a valid government. Why should they be allowed to detain those who break the law if they can't keep from breaking the law that they have been charged with upholding.

#222 to #199 - anon (06/26/2013) [-]
Different anon, in case you wanted to know. Anyhow, I don't think that it's a bad thing that he let out "government information" because if they are getting our "personal information" then it is undoubtably through the same or at least similar means of someone underhandedly giving others access to it (in one case it may be a government agency being given access, in the other it's the public being given access to some things we wouldn't have otherwise). Because of how contracts/terms of agreement are worded these days, it's not unreasonable for the government being able to "put fears to rest" in a deceitful manner, because it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY for the contract to clearly state "government officials are archiving this **** you're posting".
An example I want to make: if you post something hateful about someone, and said person is murdered/thieved from/etc some time in the future, you could be pulled into the suspect list and have your life interrupted with pointless interrogation.
User avatar #225 to #222 - admiralen (06/26/2013) [-]
yeah, but in my country you can get **** for being an asshole on the internet anyway, what im trying to say is, the government isnt really doing anything wrong here, except maybe keeping it a secret, if you dont like this sort of thing dont hang on facebook, dont make a youtube account, dont use chrome etc

User avatar #255 to #254 - admiralen (06/26/2013) [-]

But what does the government have to do with that? They aren't spying on us to find out what we like to buy. The economy is so ****** right now nobody can really even buy anything. Didn't Snowden also release information that showed that the US government spies on every country, even our closest allies?
User avatar #97 to #79 - ltsparky (06/26/2013) [-]
He specifically released info that the UK was spying on other countries at the G8 summits

In fact I think it's told that NSA took information from all the American based societies (such as facebook, google and all that stuff) from wherever in the world it was used. Everybody use google, everyday, so we can think that pretty much the entire world is spied by the USA.

He got the idea from Obama. There was a point where he tricked a bunch of reporters on a plane for 3 hours.
#12 to #8 - anon (06/25/2013) [-]
The difference is Obama did that because he had to fill the wasting taxpayer money quota, not because he was clever.

Comments are kind of heart warming that everyone sees Snowden as a patriot. He put his own life at risk to point out that the US government were infringing on civil liberties and the US constitution. I hope that he never gets caught and goes down as a hero.

I'm not sure I understand the people who are like "He's a traitor/kill him/coward etc". I guess there are those who are perfectly fine with letting the Government **** them in the ass with covert surveillance & the ability to snoop on your life and decide for themselves if you should be allowed to live, or be locked up for independent thought.
But anyway, props to the guy for messing with the media. Good for him.
User avatar #103 to #74 - colonelblammo (06/26/2013) [-]
While I understand that you appreciate someone telling the public that the government was listening in on everyone, I don't think we really needed him to tell us. This has been thought for longer than I have been alive. I have heard "Big Brother is watching" ever since I was little. Yes, I know this is from Orwell's 1984, but that is my point. This whistle blower told the American public information that was already known, then hid in a country that is not exactly our friend. He has information that could easily endanger the country. While the government did things that were wrong, they will continue to happen regardless of a whistle blower. He isn't a hero, he is an idiot who could easily **** over America.
User avatar #114 to #103 - willcutting (06/26/2013) [-]
So this is the point of your beloved freedom ? You'd been spied for your entire life but it's ok, then a guy tells everybody and it becomes less ok because everybody knows ?

Come on bro, if he would **** with the USA this guy would just had told the Russians what they wanted.

This, this **** , is all your fault. You're bragging about your liberty, your freedom. There is none of these. Your ancestor had created something to avoid tyranny, to avoid what a king would have done. This was your pride, and you don't ******* stand up for what they created when your government ****** up everything.

Inb4 ********* of red thumbs.

Oh and this is not only about the USA, your government had spied on the entire world since they take information from American based societies, google is one of them, well they can spy you if you want, but I don't want to be spied because you're the 1st worldwide power.
User avatar #117 to #115 - colonelblammo (06/26/2013) [-]
I never made any not of freedom, pride, or liberty. I think you completely misread my point. I am saying this country isn't free and it never was... I think somebody is just waiting to jump down someone's throat. I am not defending USA. I am just saying Snowden wasn't really smart in saying something everyone already knew. I know they spy on everyone. Every major nation spies on everyone. That is what I am trying to get across to you. Every country preaches about how great they are when in all reality they are pretty much the same. Granted some are a little more open about it than other, but every country spies on their people. Every country is not free.

Contrary to popular belief, not many people say that. It's just the main TV news channels and government officials who are deathly afraid of losing power and/or access. Nobody thinks Snowden should be arrested except the US government and those it influences.
#183 to #74 - anon (06/26/2013) [-]
Here's my opinion. Did he do good letting us know the government was spying on us? Yes and no. The programs were sanctioned by congress which is supposed to represent the people. Our fault for electing scumbags to congress. Did we really have a vote on whether our representatives were going to be in favor of these programs? No, fault lies with them.

I'm in favor of trying Snowden as a criminal because he also started telling China that we were spying on them. Apart from the no **** aspect, telling our enemies the nature of how we spy on them is treason and hurtful to our country. For that he should be tried as criminal.
