The entire earth is constantly moving. By your logic we couldn't place a portal anywhere. The only reason you can't place a portal on a moving surface in portal 1 is because of technical limitations. In portal 2 there is a part where you do place portals on moving tiles.
#53 to #42 - anon (06/26/2013) [-]
What if we could put portals anywhere we want just by pointing somewhere, but when we do, it automaticly disapear because earth is moving..?

So, is he dead? Or just trapped in a portal equivalent of the phantom zone?
User avatar #7 to #6 - pooplol (06/25/2013) [-]
too bad that portals cancel out when they hit each other. But that still means the dude is kill
User avatar #10 to #7 - bulbakip (06/25/2013) [-]
it does? show me the sauce. I want realistic physics readings on portals.
User avatar #11 to #10 - yamiyo (06/25/2013) [-]
There really aren't any realistic physics for portals. At least, you won't get any from from the creators. The same people who think portals on a floor and wall conserve momentum? Come on.
User avatar #12 to #11 - edgecution (06/25/2013) [-]
Why wouldn't it conserve momentum?
User avatar #13 to #12 - yamiyo (06/25/2013) [-]
Because momentum is a vector and if the vector is being changed, it's not conserving it. It's really just a technicality, but physics is physics.
User avatar #14 to #13 - edgecution (06/25/2013) [-]
But look at it like this. Due to the nature of portals, it ends up working more like the vector isn't changed in the world, but the world is changed around the vector.
#15 to #14 - jpthecursed (06/25/2013) [-]
That actually makes a lot of sense.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
#20 to #14 - anon (06/25/2013) [-]
But the principle of relativity is that the laws of physics behave the same regardless of reference frame. So we can use whatever frame we want to get the same results.

Also, in your case the momentum vector of the world still wouldn't be conserved XD

Sorry.
User avatar #75 to #14 - yamiyo (06/26/2013) [-]
The thing is that the frame of reference, the coordinates, the room you're in do not change. When you walk in a portal and come out facing another direction, that's a completely different vector now. So it's not conserved.

The reason we're at odds here is because you're talking about personal momentum. Which isn't a thing. You don't have a momentum specifically for yourself separate from the frame of reference you're in because that's fundamentally what vectors and frames of reference are. They go hand in hand.

If I throw a ball, the ball has momentum but the momentum as a vector is dependent on the frame of reference it's in and its coordinates. Without a frame of reference, vectors have zero meaning so if the frame stays the same, the vector is what's changing.

You stay in the same room and are now going a different direction. Momentum not conserved.

I don't want to assume things, but you might be thinking of "speed" being conserved.
