For those interested to know, milk is on the opposite end of the ph scale from any sort of heavy acid, and can therefore neutralize acids if applied quickly enough. For a newborn swallowing cleaning products, it may or may not work, but it's your only shot.
User avatar #36 to #20 - zight (06/23/2013) [-]
I don't think so. if it really was so it would be just as harmful as acids. it's more near the neutral point i think. not so basic

What if you ingest a toxic base like lye?

Orange juice?

User avatar #26 to #20 - admiralshepard (06/23/2013) [-]
Milk has a PH of around 6.7, so it's nearly neutral. You want to use neutral substances, not basic ones.
#44 to #20 - simeonc (06/23/2013) [-]
Cleaning products are alkali, enzymes break down fats into glycerol and fatty acids, the fatty acids neutralize
#21 to #20 - aaadddmmmiiinnn (06/23/2013) [-]
Other way around bro. Milk is slightly acidic and most cleaning products are basic.
#23 to #21 - winternetz (06/23/2013) [-]
wouldn't orange juice work better if they needed something acidic?
#24 to #23 - moldybreadcrumb (06/23/2013) [-]
Or battery acid.
every time my child swallows a bottle of ammonia i give him a bottle of fresh battery acid.

Milk is actually an acid, since it has a pH around 6.7 and is composed of lactic acid. It dilutes the cleaning product, the fats can help to lessen the active chemicals in the cleaning supplies, and it can coat the stomach. A lot of cleaning products are bases themselves, so the whole "milk is a base" theory doesn't work out.
User avatar #7 - mookiez (06/23/2013) [-]
I would say it dilutes it? Not sure.
User avatar #8 to #7 - dieanons (06/23/2013) [-]
If diluting was the case, I think water would do the job as well. Not sure though
User avatar #9 to #8 - mookiez (06/23/2013) [-]
Maybe it has a better ph for diluting stuff that water.
User avatar #11 to #9 - makotoitou (06/23/2013) [-]
Basically. Cleaning products are bases and milk is slightly acidic so it neutralizes out.
User avatar #14 to #11 - sparkytwl (06/23/2013) [-]
i always thought milk was a base?
User avatar #15 to #14 - makotoitou (06/23/2013) [-]
I thought it was too, but I checked Dr. Google first.
User avatar #16 to #15 - sparkytwl (06/23/2013) [-]
but then why does it neutralize spices in spicy food?
#31 to #16 - trickytrickster (06/23/2013) [-]
The fats in the milk, and reactions with the chemicals that cause the spiciness.
User avatar #19 to #16 - dabronydude (06/23/2013) [-]
this is going to be super layman's terms because i am tired as **** ,
the spicy food burns holes into your tongue, the milk fills the holes. then there is chemicals and pain and nerve endings.
night, bleh.
User avatar #17 to #16 - makotoitou (06/23/2013) [-]
Because spicy food is actually just pyros in disguise?

#92 to #6 - anon (06/23/2013) [-]
When you're 70 in your retirement home, I'm sure your dog will come visit you and take you out on walks and care for you. Oh no wait, It'll be dead! In fact, you'd be lucky if it lasts more than 12 years!

But seriously, kids don't ruin your life, if you raise them properly.
User avatar #53 - aussieftw (06/23/2013) [-]
Can somebody actually tell me why you'd give a dying kid milk instead of taking it to the hospital?
User avatar #62 to #53 - gitanisme ONLINE (06/23/2013) [-]
I think milk's got some molecules that can neutralize the cleaning product.

Or maybe it's because it's basic and the cleaning product acid.
User avatar #69 to #62 - custardpie (06/23/2013) [-]
I dunno. I would think the cleaning products would be basic.
#76 to #62 - anon (06/23/2013) [-]
Reverse. Most cleaning products are basic and milk is acid.
User avatar #97 to #62 - PVTDickStryker (06/23/2013) [-]
Milk is the acid, cleaning products are bases.
