Bees are actually capable of stinging without killing themselves, the problem is that, as humans, we apparently have a thicker skin that the bees get stuck in and can't get out of, therefore killing them.

It comes out in other animals, too a lot of the time. It was made to fight other insects, primarily. Also, the reason they die from it is because they pull out their stinger... Along with their stomach. That's the little sack you will see sometimes at the end of a stinger when it's in your skin. So basically they get their stomach ripped out and die of the trauma or starve.

Its the fact our skin is elastic actually, but other than that you are right.

Ah, thank you for the correction. I heard that long ago and forgot.

I did not know that, i knew that they could sting other animals without dying, but i did not know why they died when they sting us

Just like if you pull your skin taught around a mosquito biting you, he cant get out and will suck until he explodes.
User avatar #59 to #40 - epicalania (06/22/2013) [-]
well, if you clench your muscle when hes biting you, the same thing happens, i think the clenching seems less obvious for other people
so i will still clench, its funny seeing peoples faces when it happens

True but you do have to get the timing right. lol

Not entirely true.

The bee's stinger is shaped like a fish hook, so it is very difficult (10% chance) for the bee to survive an attack. The point of this is that the bees internal organs are ripped out of its body and attached to the stinger, this includes the venom pouch. So when the stinger is in you, the venom pouch attached to the stinger continues pumping venom into you for up to a minute. The queens stinger is shaped like a pipe or sword, so her stinger wont rip out her insides and such. This is because shes much too valuable. Also, their venom is designed to kill rodents and bugs that enter their hive. For the bugs, their stingers don't usually stick, but for rodents, they're supposed to stick

Fun fact, if you want a sting to hurt less, scrape off the stinger as opposed to pinching it out, as pinching it will likely push all the remaining venom in the pouch, into you.

Another fun fact. A bee's hive is incredibly sterile, as everything is clean and free from viruses. In most cases, a bee hive is cleaner then an empty patients room in a hospital.

btw, i'm an apiarist. I have 2 bee hives and i know a crap ton about bee's

Always wondered how Bees decided whether to sting a threat or just swarm it and bake the threat.
User avatar #19 - exhaustedheadcase (06/22/2013) [-]
fun fact bees arent designed for their stingers to rip out
those stingers are designed to kill other bugs and doing sothey can stab them many times, however when they stab humans our skin is so tough it breaks its stinger off trying to get it back out
