that's called a pescatarian. perfectly respectable diet, and supremely healthy, even more so than vegitarianism. some doctors argue that it's the most healthy diet possible.

Yes it has it's own name, but the problem is that there is a large group of people who call them vegetarians who still eat fish, like they've never known there's a proper name for what they're doing
#79 to #12 - wyattgc (06/17/2013) [-]
Being a vegetarian isn't healthy though....
User avatar #92 to #79 - shadowstepone (06/17/2013) [-]
it is if you are careful to get non-meat protine in your diet. veganism isn't very healthy, but that's a different story.
#105 to #92 - wyattgc (06/17/2013) [-]
That is the point however. Getting those proper amounts of protein, amino acids, and saturated fats are essential to a healthy diet. Most vegetarians do not get the proper amount of any. Not to mention b12, iron, zinc, and calcium among others that for the majority, vegetarians lack.

Again, it can be healthy if done right, just typically it isn't done right.

Eating proper amounts of meats and dairy can be healthy as well.

A girl I knew decided to become vegetarian, two of her friends were so she had to be one too. Until her hair began to fall off due to the lack of protein.

She's now "vegetarian five days a week".

Pescetarians don't necessarily call themselves vegetarians, and they don't usually choose the lifestyle for the same reason either. They tend to choose to only eat fish because it's so much healthier than red meat and poultry.
User avatar #55 to #48 - schneidend (06/17/2013) [-]
Fish don't have as much chance for disease, but to say they're by default better for you based on that is inaccurate. Also, enjoy the mercury content.
User avatar #56 to #55 - brenton (06/17/2013) [-]
Only certain fish like tuna, shark and swordfish have high mercury content. Most others have pretty standard levels. And I'm not talking about disease at all. I'm talking about cholesterol, fat content, etc.

User avatar #59 to #58 - schneidend (06/17/2013) [-]
You could do that without eating nothing but fish. They're healthy because they don't eat too much and exercise, not because they stopped eating red meat.

There are several types of "Vegetarian" that make their own distinction of what their diet entails. Most include the non consumption of red meats, fish, and animal products. But certain people cannot or choose to not omit certain things by either choice or nutritional need.

Pescetarianism - eats fish
Lacto - Oval - eats egg and dairy products
Vegan -no animal products at all
Raw Vegan -nothing cooked
User avatar #240 to #6 - potrsr (06/17/2013) [-]
in one subject in school, which is about food and drinks in general (not home economics or what ever you have not from 'murica or britan, dont yell at me we had a to chose a right answer to following question: Choose one traditional food for a vegetarian:
a) pork
b) fish
c) cornmeal mush (i dont know how to translate, pons knows whats up)
d) nothing above

the right answer was C but a lot cohse B, which was wrong. So i dont know, fish are still meat based food and i dont get it why veg. eat fish O.o
#270 to #240 - agrael (06/17/2013) [-]
The reason the girlfriend of a friend of mine eats fish, while she is a vegi, is because apparently fish don't have a prefrontal cortex. They study psychology, so go figure.
User avatar #271 to #270 - potrsr (06/17/2013) [-]
but it has meat in it! or fish dont count as meat any more? racists ***** !
#272 to #271 - agrael (06/17/2013) [-]
1. Fish has never counted as meat.
2. Theres a different reasons people do not eat animals, one of them being they dont want to hurt a sentient being.

That being said, without a prefrontal cortex you're hardly sentient. Or self aware.
User avatar #242 to #240 - noideawhatimdoing (06/17/2013) [-]
Thats a straight vegetarian, and not a pescetarian
i know, i went through school for Culinary Management..theres more and then you can even get into Kocher and Halal..
#13 to #6 - anon (06/16/2013) [-]
But it sure feels ironical to eat fish and chicken when you're a vegetarian, might as well go out on the street and yell:

"I fell compassionate against all the animals except fish and chicken, because they taste good!"
User avatar #14 to #13 - noideawhatimdoing (06/16/2013) [-]
Personally id feel worse for killing a pig or a cow than i would a fish. And the Lacto - Oval consumes by product that the live animal bears such as milk.

And humans need proteins and nutrients, some people cant handle not consuming as much as a normal 'vegetarian' and chose to go with the lesser of the evils in their eyes.

fish meat is still meat... I don't understand how people such as vegetarians or catholics differentiate between them.
User avatar #142 to #116 - thisusernameexists (06/17/2013) [-]
Some vegetarians (or pescitarians rather which is the proper name for one who abstains from all meat other than fish) feel that eating smaller kinds of fish & crustaceans is okay because first off the texture is completely different and secondly many would argue fish don't have feelings like most mammals do...especially smaller types of fish. Hope that clears things up.
User avatar #146 to #142 - thepandaking (06/17/2013) [-]
don't tell me it's a moral issue. Do they really think that fish are lesser creatures and therefore able to be eaten? how can that be the reason? I would understand if it was for health reasons but... geez.
User avatar #150 to #146 - thisusernameexists (06/17/2013) [-]
Um it can get complicated based on the person. I'm a vegetarian and avoid all meat but I have friends who have little to no problem with eating shrimp and the like because they feel they aren't intelligent enough to have compassion for...Its pretty messed up but it's shocking how many "vegetarians" feel that way.
User avatar #152 to #150 - thepandaking (06/17/2013) [-]

I get that vegetarians might look at fish and see that it's a healthy alternative to meat protein than eating red meat. I do not get how some vegetarians believe that fish are a lower creature, and therefore okay to eat rather than eating beef.
