OH BOY THE CONSOLES ARE CATCHING UP. I'm actually glad that consoles are catching up so that every game will be dx11... The thing is that actually not everyone can afford the best available hardware for their PC, and in that case consoles make their move. pc ps4

built my pc for £500 ($750ish) over a year ago.

still runs most games on ultra.

i could upgrade two, or more, major components, for example, the GPU AND CPU, for the price of a PS4 or Xbox One.

Also there are console-only games. That's why I'm getting a PS3 now c:

I think a €250 ($330) GPU would still beat the console's.
My AMD 7870 Tahiti LE is a midway between the 7870 and the 7950.
That card probably beats the console's GPU.

Go in thinking of this a hobby project computer from the getgo because there is a chance you will **** up bad.

For the specs you want. I stole Someone elses specs off a forum because I'm not a computer guy. But if you know better than me feel free to be better.

The reason consoles are catching up to the speed of PCs is because they basically are PCs now (they're using a lot of PC hardware).

Despite that, it's still fairly easy to build a computer that's much faster than a console. Just don't be one of those guys that spend $200 on a PC case, when a ~$30 one can do the same job. The same goes for a lot of other parts that people spend too much money on.

Well if you go with the pricing of a gtx titan, then its somewhere around $1000-1300 for these graphics cards alone on new egg and similar sites. I think ill stick with the $400 ps4.

Consoles are all the running the same hardware, giving them insane amounts of optimization, making the gap much less then it actually appears when it comes to actually playing the game.

GTX 550 TI master race!

I need to upgrade...

And then they'll fall behind again for the next 7 years...

How is it catching up when they fall further behind almost immediately after release. Every year a new card comes out that is significantly more powerful... so no, it's never catching up. It's a 400$ console vs. graphics cards that 1,000$ new. It never will catch up, because it doesn't have to. That's not the point of consoles, the point of consoles is to be a viable option to the majority of gamers. While gaming PC's can be had for less, those that want the best of the best are still going to be dishing out a **** ton of money.
#63 - scorrigan (06/15/2013) [-]
Not Sure I want to pay two and a half times as much for a video card alone, but i guess that makes me a poorfag
User avatar #96 to #63 - kokkodellrrisch (06/15/2013) [-]
You can get a 670 that has 50% more power than the ps4 for 350$.
The titan is for richfags.
#100 to #63 - Lmaoplanes (06/15/2013) [-]
Or you can just get an equal or better card that consoles will be running for around $100.

Get a radeon 5770 or better off ebay for like $80 and you're already ahead of the consoles before they're even out.

I just bought a gtx 460 for $80, and it's way better than what the PS4 and Xbox One will be using.

You don't have to buy the most expensive card everytime a new one comes out.
#138 to #100 - scorrigan (06/23/2013) [-]
Im not saying there aren't better graphics cards, but i sure as **** cant afford a titan

But, as you see, the PC GPU will continue in a linear expansion. Consoles never gets upgraded, and therefore they'll only get better when a new console is released. That means that the console's hardware will have no increase, whilst the computer technology will continuously become better.
2 years after he release of the PS4 we'll be at the exact same point, as we were in 2012 (maybe with an even greater difference)
Consoles aren't catching up, and they never will. Console hardware is outdated before it even make it to production. I reckon that we'll see one more generation of consoles - then people realise how bad the platform is...

if you compare for example the PS2's specs with the specs of PCs in the market when it was released (2000) you'll see that the PS2 was pretty much a calculator, but the reason why it could play games fairly well it's because it was a GAMING console, a hardware meant JUST for gaming, most PCs today can't emulate well that thing even though it had a less than 300MHz processor, sometimes with consoles it's not about how many GFLOPS you have but how well you use them.

What are you talking about my PS2 emulator works perfectly fine, the problem isn't in the hardware but the programming; cross platform porting is difficult to do and even harder to optimise to make full use of the PC's power.
#53 to #49 - shaunrnm (06/15/2013) [-]
He means your computer needs to be SIGNIFICANTLY better stats wise than a PS2 to use an emulator. If you had a computer with the same stats as a PS2 running an emulator it would die a firey death
User avatar #61 to #53 - FJSoldier (06/15/2013) [-]
Be that as it may it's kind of a null point in itself; PC's are just generally more powerful. You'd have to actively seek out something that has such low spec. Plus the emulator came out a long time after the PS2 was out, the average pc may not have been able to run it then but now I think it's more than capable.
User avatar #56 to #53 - spurieuleweteuh (06/15/2013) [-]
Thats because emulators are pretty heavy to run.
If you would run the same game on a ps4 and pc with a titan (Don't count in bad ports like GTA IV), the pc can output a much higher resolution, more particles etc.
#58 to #56 - shaunrnm (06/15/2013) [-]
Sure but the increase in graphics is would not be the same proportion to the increase in hardware specs
User avatar #62 to #58 - FJSoldier (06/15/2013) [-]
You have to remember that console games tend not to generate on the fly; there is a lot of pre-rendered stuff that they use whereas a PC will be more likely to use less prerendering and do it on the fly
User avatar #59 to #58 - spurieuleweteuh (06/15/2013) [-]
That's true too, i guess.

Still, you get less bang for your bucks with consoles, which evens it out pretty well.

But lets stop yelling at each other, console or pc is a personal preference and both have their ups and downs.

#52 to #49 - fordun (06/15/2013) [-]
Its mainly high amounts of optimization. They do this with PC's too but its impossible to get it as good as a console games optimization because everyone is running different hardware.

If you choose AMD above nVidia (pure for gaming, no video editing or PhysX mumbo jumbo) you could even get more bang for your buck.

AMD is great for gaming, but not for calculations, processing and video editing (GPU and CPU)

If you have to watch your step with money, get an APU.
The AMD A10-5800k is an APU that runs at a 3.8 gHz with 4 cores.
It has a built-in GPU that has amazing performance for a built-in GPU.
It can play most current games (BF3, FC3, Bioshock Infinite) at Medium graphics with around 45-50 FPS.
#42 - jinkazama (06/15/2013) [-]
You forget price difference.
And console optimisation tricks. A console with the same hardware as a PC could run more graphically intense games due to these tricks. It's how consoles keep up, and why graphics improved on ps3/360 between launch and now.
User avatar #11 - cowinspace (06/14/2013) [-]
The biggest thing is the move to DX11, it has taken far too long for it to happen. The few DX11 games available perform so much better then DX 9.x (No one used DX 10, it was the Vista of the DX line).
