When my teachers used that joke, I just said "Yep" and walked out to go to the bathroom before they could say anything more.

I just go into avid detail about how can is not only a word for saying someone's ability to do something, it may also be used to say as a question word, in which they have to give their permission in order for you to go to the bathroom. And I add in some random crap, which only the english teachers pick up as faulty, but all the others actually look kind of surprised when I say it. (Now they let me go to the bathroom, no questions asked. Hue.)
