If you're looking for an actual answer, it's probably something to do with X-rays. Back when they discovered how to do them, pretty much every medical scientist lost a hand by either tumours or cancer.
I'm taking a guess that he was around about that time
#89 to #25 - anon (06/11/2013) [-]
Nope, X-rays were 1890's and up. It could be an infection causing inflammation tough.

I am aware of the sarcasm in your comment but isn't that real quote from Mac Miller? There may have been other people who have said it before too, I'm sure of it.

Not really! I'm just curious I don't get why I'm being thumbed down here, I was just asking because one of my favourite artists, mac miller, writes the line "Keep your pimp hand strong, just live it up because you don't live that long." in his song Willie Dynamite from the album "I love life, thank you, thank you, thank you.
User avatar #119 to #118 - icecreamonnips (06/11/2013) [-]
1.) if you consider mac miller as a favorite artist, kill yourself 2.) pretty sure rappers said that before him 3.) it was a joke regarding the time-period for when we assumed this picture was taken

Hey guys look at me I'm following the crowd and saying Mac Miller is bad.
User avatar #131 to #119 - dubii (06/11/2013) [-]
Yes I'm aware of that! I liked Mac Miller's old music, I don't like his stuff after blue slide park. I think telling me to kill myself is a bit beyond extreme, so why say things like that?

Once, on 2fort we had 4 snipers, so I thought; " **** it. Might as well make it 5".
Then I encouraged the rest of the team to do the same.
In the end we had 10/13 players on RED going sniper. And to put the icing on the cake, I then suggested we all pull out our always trusty huntsmen.

It was glorious.

Well, before the invention of anesthetic, patients were (almost) fully alert during surgeries as the closest thing to a numbing agent was whiskey. Therefor a skilled surgeon was one who could perform as quickly as possible.

pic completely unrelated.
#35 to #34 - tehvvecme **User deleted account** (06/11/2013) [-]
Well, that also, but mostly they did it so the patient didn't lose much blood.

I just wanted to contribute.

Can you put a tourniquet on, say, stomach? Well, yes you can, but it won't be much help. So most operations were needed to perform fast.

one surgeon around the same time was amputating a leg, got to the bone, go half way through it, got bored, and snapped the rest off....worse than that, the patient watched it happen in a drunken state
