#63 - Triggahappy (06/08/2013) [-]
Actually, an Apache Helicopter does not have "Machine Guns". It has a 20mm autocannon.
User avatar #81 to #63 - rabidgerbil (06/08/2013) [-]
Wrong. It's a 30mm automatic cannon that fires HEDP (High Explosive Dual Purpose) rounds.

Machine gun: An automatic gun that fires bullets in rapid succession for as long as the trigger is pressed.
User avatar #89 to #67 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
Machine gun = crew served or mobile machinegun.

Examples are the NSVT, Dshk, PKM, M249, RPK.

Automatic cannon = an autoloading weapon using cannon ammunition (Basically 14.5mm and up.) that fires multiple rounds in rapid succession every time the firing mechanism is triggered/ that fires rounds in rapid succession for as long as the firing mechanism is being triggered.

An M230 is not a machinegun.

User avatar #91 to #89 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
It can be classified broadly as a machine gun by definition. "Machine gun" is used loosely when not talking about specifics. And ultimately he didn't even get the type of gun right.
User avatar #92 to #91 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
It can, but the definition found in dictionaries is outdated.

When civilian talk about turning the music on, they mean literally turning the music on.

When the airforce talks about turning the music on, they're most likely gonna go into territory where there are enemy radars.
User avatar #93 to #92 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
Yeah, i was just saying that you aren't technically "wrong" when you call it a machine gun, it's just not really the preferred term.
User avatar #94 to #93 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
But in definition it isn't a machinegun, because it is also a cannon due to the ammunition it fires, and a cannon cannot be a machinegun.
User avatar #95 to #94 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
Well, yeh, i guess. I'm not a huge weapons expert so i'm not going to argue with you there
User avatar #96 to #95 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
I'm not a certified expert either and have never operated 100% of the firearms I have knowledge about.

I'm just a guy who knows his **** and will later possibly have a military career of some sort.
User avatar #99 to #96 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
I know a decent amount, but i'm not really someone who goes out of his way to learn this stuff, I'll stick to space.
User avatar #100 to #99 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
I'm a jack of all trades when it comes to knowledge.

I know at least a little about near damn everything, and I know a lot about most things.

No expert on anything though, just a curious bastard who grew up playing tactical shooters.
User avatar #101 to #100 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
I'm a fairly knowledgeable person too. I like to focus on astronomy, theoretical physics, and stuff along those lines. The main reason i know things about firearms and military is probably because of my friend, who is a bit of a military nut. I also play a lot of fps games as well, and i like to know what's behind the gun i'm using.
#103 to #101 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
Most if not all my knowledge in military hardware and software comes from tactical shooters and simulations.

DCS A-10C is pretty much close enough when it comes to everything we're allowed to know about the planes.

The military is restricting AGM-65E information, so that's not simulated in the civilian version.

Shame, its not even some amazing superweapon, its a laser guided AGM-65, but we don't know exactly how it works.

User avatar #105 to #103 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
I play a decent amount of flight simulators. A lot of them are space flight sims though, so it's not exactly the same. I'm not super familiar with all the functions in planes, though a know a good few.

I also love a10s, they're one of my favorite planes.
User avatar #106 to #105 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
I don't think anyone but the devs know everything what there is to know about the A-10C's combat employment ingame and can properly use it with no help, so yeah.

I can do combat missions, but some things are still unclear after over a year.
User avatar #108 to #106 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
I'm personally terrible at flying jets in games, i usually stick to helicopters.
User avatar #111 to #108 - archosaurusrev (06/08/2013) [-]
On the contrary, I suck dick at flying helicopters, but I'm pretty much a top tier flier when it comes to precision, smoothness and efficiency in getting from point A to B.

Although the only proper heli I've ever played is the KA-50, I should get DCS Huey but I have no credit card...
User avatar #112 to #111 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
I haven't played anything in awhile, my desktop broke down so i'm saving up for a new one. I should have it this summer, but i have to make due with this laptop for now.

I'm also really looking forward to star citizen, which is going to be a huge kick-ass space sim.
User avatar #114 to #67 - rabidgerbil (06/08/2013) [-]
the M230 on the apache is programmed to fire in bursts unless the pilot selects full automatic. It can fire in a 10 round, 20 round (combat burst) or 50 round burst. The 10 round burst is sometimes used to make sure the gun is centered properly and is firing true. I suggest reading a book called Hellfire, it was written by an apache pilot serving in afghanistan.
User avatar #115 to #114 - djequalizee (06/08/2013) [-]
yeh, we had a discussion about this below. I was just using it as a broad term. I know how cannons work, more or less.

The only ones that can be useful in a fight would be hunting and martial arts. Martial arts would also not be very useful in a war.

#56 to #55 - manninex (06/08/2013) [-]
That's fine. The bomber doesn't have to be anywhere near AA guns to do damage. 12 of these with a range of 150+ miles.
#57 to #56 - cheifadvisoryuri (06/08/2013) [-]
The Gatling guns are also capable of shooting missiles out of the air. They also come with wheels.
#58 to #57 - manninex (06/08/2013) [-]
Yeah, not at Mach 5. And plus these are nukes. So they have a very thick metal shell around the actual warhead. You could shoot the rocket motor off but then it just becomes a normal bomb. And best part of all, these things are actually real.
#60 to #58 - cheifadvisoryuri (06/08/2013) [-]
How about a few Magnetrons. By using high powered electromagnetic force, a dozen of them could easily stop a dropping nuke.
#61 to #60 - manninex (06/08/2013) [-]
So that would be 144 for a full barrage of Kh-15. If they could stop a projectile coming down from right on top at Mach 5. That's 3,800 miles an hour. And again, these are actually real.
#62 to #61 - cheifadvisoryuri (06/08/2013) [-]
You could fire an atom into another atom at 3,800 mph and because of electromagnetism, they would never touch. The Magnetrons use this on a much larger scale. A single one, given enough time, could lift a medium building out of its foundations into the air.
And further more, I have dealt with nuclear missiles before. All it takes is a bit of "persuasion".
#47 to #39 - unoletmehavename (06/08/2013) [-]
