I tried holding it sideways once (I was young).
After the bullet fired, the shell ejected straight up out the side of the gun ( now facing upwards) and landed on my forearm.
I got severe burns from the hot shell on my wrist. MFW

When you fire a pistol the recoil kicks it up a little bit, so your next bullet will be a little higher then the previous.
When you hold it sideways, you have a better grip on it, and the recoil is smaller.
Plus, the recoil is sideways, maybe the direction the dude will run to.
