I tried holding it sideways once (I was young).
After the bullet fired, the shell ejected straight up out the side of the gun ( now facing upwards) and landed on my forearm.
I got severe burns from the hot shell on my wrist. MFW

When you fire a pistol the recoil kicks it up a little bit, so your next bullet will be a little higher then the previous.
When you hold it sideways, you have a better grip on it, and the recoil is smaller.
Plus, the recoil is sideways, maybe the direction the dude will run to.

Why are you questioning the logic of the Simpsons?
Really?
Have you got nothing better to do?

a handgun can malfunction if its being holded sideways, and no, the recoil isn't smaller, nor will the bullet "be a little higher than the previous"
