I always immediately put it in the sink without thought.

Then I come back and recognize the fault of my plot.

Couple of issues regarding leaving things close to the sink:

I live with 1 guy and 5 other girls and, as you might imagine, they are reasonably nazi about leaving as little stuff as possible in the sink, or close to it, when it can be put in the dishwasher.

"Often" I leave a mug I've used, and "cleaned" with water, by the sink just because I haven't decided yet if I want another cup of coffee later or not.

These almost allways get put in the dishwasher rather quick, and it annoys the hell out of me. I tell them I might need it later (which to me means withing the next 30 minutes) but, alas...

This might be just me and my, uhm, rather tollerant view on cleanliness (I'm by no means dirty or supermessy), but I got told early on was how putting a used (newly used) cheese slicer in the rack for commonly used kitchen equipment without washing it clean first was nasty, which I can't understand.

it's been used recently so no fear of germs etc.
I haven't touched anything other then cheese.
YOu are going to use it for the same purpose, and my cheese isn't somehow dangerou. i KNOW we all use the same type.

I can see how it might be to prevent it from ever sitting around and gathering up mol/bacteria etc. but we have DAILY washing rounds, where it gets washed at least once per second day.
