User avatar #59 to #51 - meganinja (05/27/2013) [-]
My girlfriend was an arachnophobe, and she's a Funnyjunk user. So I saved this one picture with a spider that's covered in baby spiders, and sent it to her.

she's not my girlfriend anymore.

changed a folder on her desktop to a spider icon with no name and waited

As E.B. White once said:
"Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process."

This seems to imply that stupid people are the only ones capable of determining when a joke is funny. Like, if someone dumb and/or slow were to watch Bo Burnham and not catch or not understand some of the Shakespearean humor, does that mean there is no joke? Or does this mean to say that jokes only exist insofar as the individual hearing the joke understands it?

I guess I disagree with this assertion on both levels. First, just because one is too stupid to stupid to understand a joke, that does not mean there is no joke. Secondly, I don't think words being said to someone are in a constant state of superposition between joke and nonjoke until someone hears the words and deciphers them. In the same way that a tree falling in a forest with no one to hear it doesn't matter, because the vibrations and waves will still be sent out into the universe, an assembly of words is still a joke regardless of the fact that there may be no one around to "hear" the joke, (By "hear" I mean decipher its meaning in the same way we decipher meaningful sound from vibrations).

now now, he didn't say when someone didn't understand a joke, the joke wasn't funny.
If you have to explain a joke to someone, then it won't be nearly as funny, if funny at all, so the joke "is no more".
#46 to #43 - nosensephenom (05/27/2013) [-]
I'm not talking about the funniness of the joke at all. I specifically used "understands" instead of "laughs" hoping to avoid that confusion. I'm only talking about the existence of the joke. Perhaps I took "there is no joke" a bit more literal than Joker would've liked me to, but I think the question I discussed is far more interesting at the end of the day.
User avatar #76 to #35 - schneidend (05/27/2013) [-]
The act of explaining the joke ruins it, not the failure to understand.
#89 to #76 - nosensephenom (05/28/2013) [-]
The need to explain a joke would only come after someone has failed to understand a joke. "If you have to explain a joke" implies that there is a lack of understanding preceding the need to explain. "There is no joke" of course would mean that, if you have to explain a joke, there is no joke.
User avatar #90 to #89 - schneidend (05/28/2013) [-]
Sometimes, when others don't laugh, people will explain the joke. A lack of understanding is not required.
User avatar #17 - thedutchs (05/27/2013) [-]
Does he mean to say that the moment you have to explain a joke, it has lost it's delivery?

Or does he mean to say that when a joke isn't understood, it's no longer a joke?
User avatar #19 to #17 - perseeus (05/27/2013) [-]
Both, in a way.

When a joke has to be explained because it isn't understood
It has then lost it's delivery and is no longer considered as a joke
User avatar #31 to #19 - thedutchs (05/27/2013) [-]
Well then. That makes sense to me.
