But...why not just put a light on the front of your bike? It might be more effective as it can probably allow you to see further than just that grid.

The grid allows you to better see the topography of the land, i.e where holes and bumps are

Yeah, I'm not an idiot, but wouldn't a light get the same result and show you these things?

It won't be as obvious, but surely you'd notice a hole and a bump with a flashlight. And the light from the flashlight will go further, so you have more time to notice and react to it.

with only one point of light it is hard to see the 3 dimensions of things. With the light source being so close to the ground and to any up and coming objects it can be difficult to judge exactly how deep a hole is or what is just a darkened patch of the ground and what is a dimple in the road. This device allows you to judge the third dimension of objects better.
