I believe you are right to a certain point. I believe the more strict Jews are not allowed to handle pork if at all possible, and can not use it for business.

User avatar #11 to #4 - grieze (05/25/2013) [-]
israel does sell bacon in the country, its just the social norms and atmosphere leads people to not buy or sell it but if you walk into a certain christian district in israel you can buy it, it's not illegal there, just the social norm is not to eat bacon.
User avatar #13 to #11 - evilcookie (05/25/2013) [-]
Nope, it is illegal.

Just certain very specific legal loops allow the selling of pork.. Under heavy taxes to the state ofcourse.

Israel is a **** hole.
#23 to #13 - anon (05/26/2013) [-]
i lived in israel for 5 years... and it wasnt illegal at all to buy grill or eat pork, and was pretty cheap

Do you live in Israel, or have you ever been there? My experience so far is that it's really a free country where you can do as you please, eating pork and what not.

#137 to #129 - clockworkphysicist (05/26/2013) [-]
It's cool, atheists have given the world tons of cool topics and technology. Hell most of my entire world right now is theoretical physics and general relativity; topics that wouldn't even exist without free thinkers like you guy's to kick start it. I would love a world where Science and Christianity are not considered polar opposites and we could coexist to change the world for the better. However eternal conflict is in human nature, but just so long as there are a few peaceful people, just so long as good can overcome evil, which it can, I will be there to high five you into a better future.

Actually, you could just believe that God created all the random particles in the universe that eventually went on with their process.

Actually, if you want an atheist's reasoning for the purpose of Christianity or religion in General of this...
People to this day can't understand (let alone control) the world around them, and for a little human watching his home get swept away by massive floods or sucked up by a hurricane, it can be maddening. If somebody tells you, there are supreme beings who control these events, and do these things as punishment for bad behavior, it gives people a sense of structure and order. It makes them believe they have a role to play in the world and with it, some control over their lives.
I personally don't believe in it, but I see ways that religion, right or wrong, helps people, and we shouldn't talk about it like it's a curse.
However, this led to a dependency on that structure and that led to the Church gaining more and more power. Holy men are still just men, and power can corrupt almost any man. You mistake Christianity, for Christian leaders, not the same. God and The Church go together, but they're still different. Just think about stuff like that before you start attacking any religion again...

The logic applies to drugs, guns, marriage, etc. Good logic.
User avatar #118 to #106 - brockyboi (05/26/2013) [-]
The point of the post is to say that just because their religion disagrees with something they don't make it illegal to practice. It's about gay marriage.
#167 to #118 - doctorgolgo (05/26/2013) [-]
I thought it was about the recent tide of Islam/sharia sweeping Europe and now North America. Like... they are OUR rules and laws, but YOU have to follow them, too. Yes, even in your OWN country that we are only visiting.
User avatar #183 to #118 - douthit (05/26/2013) [-]
That's one way to look at it. Another, broader, logically consistent point is to say that you shouldn't try to outlaw things just because you don't like them (like marriage, guns, drugs). But that's only if you wanna be logically consistent.

User avatar #124 - Cambro (05/26/2013) [-]
This is actually because the Jews have always considered them selves set apart from the rest of the world. Thus the very word holy, which literally means set apart. They've never sought acceptance, they just want to be left alone. Remember, Judaism is only a religion because Christianity came around. Before Christ set the boundary line between Jews and Christians, being Jewish and following the practice was entirely cultural and ethnic.
