"Killing a once living breathing SENTIENT animal"

Sentient :
1: responsive to or conscious of sense impressions <sentient beings>
2: aware
3: finely sensitive in perception or feeling

Not entirely sure I would call cows, chickens, or pigs sentient.

Would you call a dog sentient? Pigs are more intelligent than dogs.

Not sure, this is a tough call but I always thought that sentient was for "higher" life forms. Ones that can build and create, use tools, problem solvers and so on. Granted you can look at other animals and go SEE, APE USING A TOOL, which is true but they are wayyyy far behind our standard of using tools.

Which definition of "sensitive", "perception of feeling" and "sense impression" are we using?
