Ricky Gervais has 4,608,455 followers, so if 10% of those donate $5, its $2,304,227.50 donated to the cause. Plus it's funnty and it gets shared around on sites like this one and it reaches even more viewers. I wouldn't call it bragging...

Ok maybe this needs to be explained to you. Ricky is an atheist so that is his way to mock those who are seemingly doing something about it (praying) and getting into news because of it versus people who are actually doing something (sending money, collecting money, volunteering)

He wasn't bragging. Ridiculing wealthy pop stars' decisions to contribute nothing further than muttering into the air for help is not bragging. That he said he donated money is an attempt to set an example.
