That's completely wrong. They drew Christ the child to appear as an older man to convey his wisdom, intelligence, and enlightenment as an anonymous comment already pointed out.

i guess it's kind of renaissance depiction which is highly influenced by byzantine iconography. if you ask me, majority of western and some part of eastern art represents christian persons and deities in weird form and with ugly faces, but those are the art conventions of certain style.

good example is baroque statues that look like a taxidermed human bodies. their faces are repellent and pale, so you can read fear rather then hope or whatever christianity teaches. little kupid angels i find especially ugly since they're represented as fat little kids with down syndrome.

baroque art is in general obsessed with human body, sexuality and death which makes it suitable for psychoanalitical aproach.

Early Renaissance to be exact. It does have that staticness of the eastern icons, but it lacks the correct human anatomical features of the Renaissance. Go look up the Cowper's Madonna by Raphael and see what I mean. The Renaissance was all about human secularism. Yes religion played a large aspect in it regardless, but the ideas of human proportion and perspective played an even larger piece. If I were to guess, this would be the Trecento period, or 14th century Italian early renaissance from gothic to Resistance.
