above a certain height, and depending on how you land in the water, an impact to water becomes equal to landing on solid cement

essentially if you jump off a 200+ foot bridge and hit the water with your body spread out, the impact would kill you

Eh... water has superficial tension, which means the faster you hit water, the harder its resistance is.

If you have ever belly flopped to a pool you know it hurts more than diving head or feet first.

Depending on the height from where you jump, you will die when hitting the water, just like if you where hitting concrete.

Actually... even though its a cartoon, the height from where pocahontas jumps its believable that she would survive (if she dives in correctly).

Pearl divers now use scuba diving equipement, but on the old days (and in the case of poor communities still today) they used to jump from the highest possible cliffs close to an oister area with rocks tied to them to collect pearls.

That way they reach the bottom faster, reducing the time they have to hold their breath (having great care on the knife they will use to both open the oister and cut the ties to the rocks once they are done)

Actually, you can jump into water from many, many stories up before it does any real damage. Yes belly flops hurt like hell, but the idea that water is like concrete from just a couple of stories up is completely false. However, if you are jumping into water from one of those bridges like that, chances are the currents are so strong you will lose control & won't be able to surface, thus you will drown. The height required for water to kill you from G-forces alone is ridiculously high.

Pic semi-related, only one I have for this situation.

They hit will be likely lethal unless you enter foot/head first and yeah, its more likely that you lose conciousness and drown than die from the impact directly.

However if you enter any other way, its very probable your back/neck will snap, leaving you paraplegic and/or dead, it does not require a really great fall to do some damage if you dont dive properly.

however, it is possible to survive such a jump, if the skin of the water has been broken or of you take a special possition.

How would you have to jump to survive a fall like that? (Im just thinking about how they do it in all the movies)

Well, you try to enter the water using a figure with the less possible area, thats why divers enter the water head first, arms extended, so the arms help break the water surface tension first, and then the rest of the body follows in a less violent matter.

In nowaday movies most of those high falls to water are just computer generated, in older movies some of the falls to water used mannequins using the same clothing.

It has to be really high to be mortal, divers (specially those that perl havesters oisters) usually jump from very high altitudes but because they land in a smart way they dont suffer the damage they could if they landed incorrectly.

you can also go on youtube for "world record high dives", some people do this for fun/challenge.

They basically do a controlled flip or two to make sure to go in with their feet first as straight as possible. If you don't control your rotation by flipping you will most likely land at a very awkward angle from such heights - I can't even get it right from a 5 meter tower because I don't have the balls to do a flip
