this almost makes me wish there was proof of god's existence. i mean... this sounds really nice.

I mean, I look at it as: why not live by gods rules even if hes not real? they make the world a better place and can help you out as well. Then in the future you will either die and go to the afterlife. Or maybe you will just lay in your grave sleeping. Either way you have lived a good life.

but why even bother to call them "God's" rules? why not just live by a set of rules you believe will make the world a better place? if it turns out there is a being meant to judge you in afterlife, sure, you'll have to face your mistake in disbelief, but he must surely recognize the good things you have done as well?

That's is all true. If you do good in this life as "God" wants you too. Then in the afterlife he's not going to throw you down to hell for not completely believing in him. So if you don't like the idea of worshiping him then do all of that

it's a mater of believe, there might be a proof in the future and there might be not, but just because there're no proofs doesn't mean god's not there

which, i guess, is why i said i (almost) wish there was proof. i'm not saying there never will be, just that there isn't, and that there should be, because that'd be nice.

agreed. But God has already done enough for us to believe in him. Also, you can ask for signs. Trust me, it works dude
