it doesnt affect you. Youre not marrying someone of your same sex.
Why do you care?
User avatar #12 to #9 - stocxt ONLINE (05/18/2013) [-]
Some people believe that if gay marriage is legalized they'll start legalizing other "atrocities" like pedophilia or bestiality.
#13 to #12 - notthistime ONLINE (05/18/2013) [-]
which makes no ******* sense. "hey he can marry the same sex! well why cant i go have sex with a 5 year old?"
#21 to #12 - xxpredatorxx (05/18/2013) [-]
That's not why at all. They just don't want their religious tradition ******* all over. Civil union equality is a perfectly fine cause to fight for, but when you legalize gay "marriage" then the lawsuits against priests or pastors who refuse to marry people. It's at this point that people start ******* with religious freedom, and that's not ok.
User avatar #28 to #21 - thedumbledore (05/18/2013) [-]
Not sure about the US, but we are legalising gay marriage here is Scotland and no one will be forced to marry gays. It's a strictly 'Opt in' thing for churches. Why should people have a 'civil union'? Are they not the same as us? Why should we refuse to allow a set of people marriage simply because SOME religious people believe it is wrong?

It ***** with no ones freedom. At all. That's complete ******** . Not to mention that marriage is no longer and never has been owned by religion.
#30 to #28 - xxpredatorxx (05/18/2013) [-]
Maybe in Scotland no-one will be forced to marry gays, but Scotland's a different country to the US.

"marriage is no longer and never has been owned by religion"... ***************** . The foundation of the Western tradition of Christian marriages have been the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Apostle Paul
It's a religious tradition, therefore changing it is an assault on religious freedom.
User avatar #32 to #30 - thedumbledore (05/18/2013) [-]
Oh, my, Scotland is a different country to the US? WHO KNEW! By the by, we were not exclusively talking about the us, you condescending **** .

I think I worded that wrong. I meant to say marriage is now owned by Christianity (the main opposition here). It was also at one point tradition to stone men and women and have homosexuality illegal, and that was ridiculous too.

''It's tradition'' is a ridiculous argument when it comes to the law.

A 'religious freedom' should not come before what is excluding a group of people from a very, very basic freedom. I do believe churches should have the choice, but people who simply dislike homosexuality should absolutely not be able to influence something that is nothing to do with them (two same sex people getting married).
#33 to #32 - xxpredatorxx (05/18/2013) [-]
Pardon me for using one country as an example of an extreme. You sure as hell didn't do that to, you hypocritical **** .

Is now owned? are you trying to imply that it hasn't been owned by abrahamic religions for over 2000 years?

"It's tradition" ISN'T my arguament. My argument is that it's a tradition that DOESN'T BELONG TO YOU! You have no right to change it.

Why do we NEED to put one freedom over another? Why do we HAVE to change an existing religious tradition for everyone to be happy? WE DON'T. There's a little thing called civil union equality. I mentioned it earlier.
User avatar #34 to #33 - thedumbledore (05/18/2013) [-]
Marriage existed before abrahamic religions. You can get non-religious marriages now, it is not an exclusively religious thing. IT BELONGS TO EVERYONE YOU IMBECILE. Are you SERIOUSLY implying that marriage only belongs to one specific strain of belief?

Keep religion OUT of politics. People have the right to have whatever religion they want, but not to shove it into the law. That is the difference between a civil right and a 'religious freedom'. A religious freedom is a ridiculous term when it comes to law.

A majority of people in the US and the UK support gay marriage. Why should some extremes come over the majority?

#55 to #33 - ohnotwoone (05/18/2013) [-]
I would be perfectly happy if the government stopped recognizing marriage in terms of benefits, and instead had a civil partnership that any two people could get which carried all the benefits of marriage. That way marriage could stay w/ religion and the benefits of unions could stay with the state, and any two people could receive these benefits. Because that will never happen we must allow homosexuals the right to marry in order to obtain equality in the state.
User avatar #35 to #33 - thedumbledore (05/18/2013) [-]

User avatar #16 to #8 - elyiia (05/18/2013) [-]
Civil unions provide some of the tax breaks and other benefits provided to a married couple. Some of them can also be granted with the help of a lawyer and thousands of dollars. Others, you can't get in a civil union no matter what.

Not to mention that there's states that don't even properly recognise civil unions.
User avatar #11 to #8 - dafiltafish (05/18/2013) [-]
depends on the state.
#15 to #4 - anon (05/18/2013) [-]
Then that's not gay marriage. That's equality in the civil union. Same sex marriage licences are referred by the states as a civil union, but the states don't give as many benefits to a civil union as a marriage licence. Marriage if most of you forgot is a religious sacrament for Jews, Catholics and Christians ETC... If the bill passes as gay "MARRIAGE" all religious churches could be taken to court (by the selfish greedy idiots that ruin it for everyone, you know the ones) for refusing to marry same sex couples due to the fact that it's against their faith. The religious aren't attacking gay's Rights, the gays are attacking our religious sacrament. UNLESS you change the wording. the wording makes a huge difference when it comes to court, certain wording may be open for interpretation.
1.Change the wording, it'll get the religious off your backs.
2. Fight the State for civil union equality.
3. ???
4. Profit!
As a catholic, I can say that we hate the sin but love the sinner

#36 to #4 - anon (05/18/2013) [-]
Wouldn't be less **** on everyone if they complained to the government to allow those things without marriage?

In a democracy, the government is supposed to listen to the people and meet the best solution. In religion, you either except the beliefs or you can go find a religion that you do believe in, if not then become atheist or make your own.

Also, for adoption, some places don't require marriage. Some places adopt to singles, those living together and those in a civil partnership.

The only reason for marriage, in the current situation (That a civil partnership doesn't provide) is a God involved in the relationship, and financial aid, as insurance companies etc require marriage to provide aid to the partner.
