I actually got him on my second try. I was just on. Used my broadsword, backstab after backstab. The one at the top of the tower was way tougher. I ended up luring him down the tower, past the rats towards the bonfire, and pushing him off the cliff.

Or get more skilled. I'd still take the advice since using something like the morning star or club just takes to long.

I must though, his comrade at the Undead Parish is much more difficult. Seriously, **** that guy.

Using a PC means that any community fixes that get posted to places like Dark Souls Nexus. The big three are as follows.

DSFix, which is a general fix mod that lets you set to game to a higher resolution and implement other things that From Software couldn't be arsed to fix.

DSMouseFix, which makes it so if you refuse to use a controller the use of a mouse is much more tolerable since you can even use a five-button mouse and it comes with a whole bunch of settings so you can change your play style. I like to make Guard and Attack be the left and right buttons, then hold shift to make them Parry and Heavy Attack.

And recently there was a mod that makes it so Summon Signs (how you coop) appear in the worlds of your GFWL friends much faster. So if you make a friend while randomly engaging in Jolly Cooperation and add said person to your friend list, you'll be more likely to encounter them later.

Dude, I lucked out and ended up level grinding way more than I should've before I fought him, so I just Zweihander'd his ass into a pulp. Still have yet to kill Sif, he's still very much a problem.
User avatar #192 to #191 - dawnfall (07/15/2013) [-]
With Sif, you have to stay as close as possible. And you gotta be fast, so go in there as light as possible! (Worked for me).

Yeah, I finally managed to beat him after I buffed up my weapons and poured some points into vitality. Still, being able to dodge and whatnot was a plus.

Dark Souls has the most well tuned difficulty there is. You will die, a lot. But it's very much worth that journey of death. Many have quit the game and thats why it has such a reputation.

I must say though, ignore fags who say garbage like "if your good you'll be fine". You won't. They are just trying to be internet tough guys, make themselves feel special. I complete many of the most challenging games that come out, on the most challenging difficulties available. But still, its a great journey, Enjoy.
#112 to #48 - thisismyhandle (05/16/2013) [-]
I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think Dark Souls is as difficult as some people make it out to be. Sure, there are some parts of the game that stand out as being quite challenging (I haven't finished the game, but the fight that stands out the most is Ornstein and Smough). Also, it was tough for the first 1-3 hours just because it takes a bit to get used to the mechanics, but once I adjusted I found general combat to be pretty alright.

The game is certainly challenging, and this makes the experience incredibly rewarding, but I certainly believe that some people give the difficulty level too much hype.

Also, this should be obvious, but if you are generally good at video games and able to learn quickly, the game will be somewhat less difficult for you.

Dark souls has one of the best atmospheres of any game I have ever played. It's this really, sometimes even extremely tough world that can be equally rewarding. There is so much lore to it and just has this very unique aspect to it. Not to mention the combat is really solid whether you are playing a full mage or full melle. Playing a paladin (for me atleast) is the funnest. It's worth trying out to see if you like it, the lightning miracles are pretty awesome for the first playthrough, and sunlight blade is really overpowered for certain bosses. There is just so many good things to say about this game, and nothing really bad. The difficulty is definitely something good about it, not bad. Too many games hold your hand nowadays, dark souls is a nice change of pace.

I just started playing this game: Anyone have any tips for a new player?
User avatar #94 to #41 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
Play the game almost blind, IE don't look up specific builds or anything and just embrace the world it was meant to be played as. It's a magical experience playing the game blind for the first time. There is just so much to take in. After you have beaten the game and played it for it's story and you maybe want to play it again and see how different it is being prepared then do that. I recommend for your second playthrough to try a paladin type build that uses all the offence miracles. The lightning spells are awesome. If you want to use them for you current playthrough I won't mind helping you get to them though, they can be really usefull.
User avatar #162 to #94 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Yeah, so many people tried to find out what it did, spent a HUGE chunk of time doing it too. Then one of the creators said something about how he had a prank planned for the pendant, and everyone was butthurt.

I can say I've never actually gone through the long way of Blighttown.
User avatar #123 to #116 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]

User avatar #129 to #123 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Yeah, I can imagine. I climbed up there from the normal entrance once on my first character, and had no clue how to get down....
User avatar #131 to #129 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
It's a pain in the ass. Toxic darts everywhere, enemies out the ass, confusing terrain, all coupled with horrible lag, and it's still an amazing place despite one of the worst places in dark souls.
User avatar #133 to #131 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Oh yeah, they did really really good on Blighttown, but it's like you have to have a love/hate relationship with the place.
User avatar #136 to #133 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
Yeah. Honestly I love the idea and everything behind blighttown, the only thing keeping it from being as awesome as it could be is the horrible lag.
#143 to #136 - justakewldewd (05/16/2013) [-]
After spending today navigating through Blighttown via the entrance from the Depths (the long way? or were you two talking about the great hollow?) I can safely say that Blighttown is a very frustrating area considering how early in the game a newby may encounter it. But damn is it still fun.

I remember seeing the huge spider's nest and thinking NOPE and just going up the watermill elevator thing cause it seemed to be the more sensible option. All I could think was 'they wouldn't make me fight a giant spider for my second big bad. Right?' and so I exited at Drake Valley and saw the sun. Slowly I remembered that the second bell was "far below at the base of Blighttown" and realized they were actually going to make me fight a giant spider. At which point I looked up ALL the guides cause **** spiders.

But then I met The Fair Lady and now I don't know how to feel.

I can also safely say that since this was my second time going through (though I haven't beaten the game yet, I'm rebuilding my character from scratch since it seems I borked the last one and couldn't beat the 4Kings) that if you've learned how to parry, its just so ******* SATISFYING when I can parry one of those dog faced bastards and put a blade in there guts after all the pain and misery I went through the first time. Revenge is best served with cold steel!
User avatar #160 to #143 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
We're talking about the easy entrance from New Londo Ruins, the difficult entrance is from The Depths.
User avatar #139 to #136 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Yeah, but that's only on console. There's 0 lag on PC.
User avatar #142 to #139 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
I have a pretty decent pc and I get random frame drops, and I know my pc can handle it because the frame drops are at random places at random times and it always goes to 15 and stays locked there for a few seconds. The optimisation could use some work for dark souls, but that Is about the only problem it has.
User avatar #145 to #142 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Yeah, the game was REALLY well made, but I don't think they meant to make it like they did. I'm hesitant to say it's perfect, because everything is unbalanced, but you can use other things to re-balance it by yourself, so.
User avatar #148 to #145 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
I think the fact that dark souls is imperfect is what makes it perfect in a sense. You will never play another game that gives off the same air and atmosphere as dark souls. It has it's share of problems, but those problems are what draws people towards it. Like how just cryptic the story actually is and such. I just ******* love dark souls and now I want to re-play it again. All in all I think dark souls is a masterpiece, regardless of what people say about it.
User avatar #150 to #148 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Oh yeah, definitely. DS is one of my all time favorite games, if not my favorite. There will never be another game that will match it in how tat game works or feels when you first play it. Ever.
User avatar #153 to #150 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
Right on. Glad someone sees dark souls the same way that I do. I'm sure there are plenty others that feel the same way, but i've never actually gotten to talk to anybody that felt as strongly as I do about it. Speaking of dark souls, how hyped are you for dark souls 2?

User avatar #154 to #153 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
I'm really REALLY ******* excited for it. All I hope for is that they don't add difficulty changing, and don't make it super linear. Other than that, I think they'll do great.
User avatar #155 to #154 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
It seems like it will be open world in the same way dark souls is, and I doubt they will add a difficulty changing to it either. My only worry is if they will change the way the story is told in dark souls, it could have more hints from npc dialogue and cutscenes with some voice acting, but ultimately I want it to stay the same and that might not happen since they have someone else working in that department now.
User avatar #156 to #155 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Ugh, yeah. The first one was good because of the lack of story. Or, hints, rather. There are contradictions and things left unsaid that I would rather they didn't blatantly put out there. It makes the game way more interesting.
User avatar #159 to #156 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
Won't let me reply to the other comment, but I really hope so. So much mystery is surrounded by that damn thing and has left so many people just wanting to know what the significance behind it really is.
User avatar #157 to #156 - cozer (05/16/2013) [-]
Yeah, dark souls just has this unique taste to it and that would be a shame if they were to get rid of that. It would anger alot of souls fans I know that for a fact. Me especially since dark souls is one of my favorite games of all times, if not my most absolute favorite.

dont rely on online advice or walkthroughs to much. the best part of the game is the experience and the discoveries you'll make.. unless youre like really freaking stuck and have no idea what to do next for like two days straight then just see what direction to go next lol
User avatar #62 to #41 - lillpip (05/16/2013) [-]
Oh boy where do I start...
When you hit the burg go get a bow and some arrows from the merchant. The merchant is underneath the two hallow soldiers with spears. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it.
Don't go to the cemetery when you first start.
Back to the bow, buy about 50-60 normal arrows or 30-40 large arrows, make sure your Dexterity is high enough to use the bow. When you encounter the big ass bridge behind Solaire, run onto the bridge, about until you hit the giant burn marks, and run back behind the corner by Solaire, wait for the fire. When that's done, run halfway across the bridge, take the stairs to your left, and be sure to kick the ladder down when you're at the bottom of the stairs, it's a life saver. When that's done, go through the other door leading under the bridge, to the left the Dragons (Drake, whatever) tail is swinging side to side, whip out your bow, and unload arrows into his tail until it comes off. You'll get a Drake Sword. This sword is a HUGE help in the beginning of the game, but don't rely on it for too long. Eventually, you'll want to go under the dragon/drake and get the Claymore.

That's all for now though, I don't want to spoil too much, y'know?
User avatar #97 to #62 - churrundo (05/16/2013) [-]
It's not a dragon nor a drake. It's a wyvern. Wyverns have two legs and two wings, while dragons and drakes have four and two. Just so you know.

I just looked it up, Drakes have no wings, Dragons have 4 legs, two wings, Wyverns have 2 legs, 2 wings.

The Wiki names it Hellkite Dragon, the lore says it's a Drake, and it's nicknamed The Bridge Wyvern. What the **** .

be cautious, remember every step you take away from the bonfire is a risk, so treat it as such. not for a while will you be able to not give a **** about general enemies. also recommend having a computer/tablet handy, there are a lot of things you might never find without a guide. even then, does not make it easy.
