It doesn't cost anything to train outside
User avatar #45 to #21 - toocheesy (05/13/2013) [-]
But for weightlifters the gym is a very convenient place to be able to go to. It saves you the trouble of setting up a cage in your garage, which can costs thousands, and not everyone has the space for it. Training outside helps get you fit and tone your body, but weightlifting will get you big. Unless you take steroids.
User avatar #58 to #45 - rainbowrush ONLINE (05/14/2013) [-]
You get in a generally better shape when training outside.
#59 to #58 - anon (05/14/2013) [-]
what kind of retarded logic is that?
User avatar #61 to #59 - rainbowrush ONLINE (05/14/2013) [-]
Running, swimming, skiing, football all train almost every muscle in the body. Lifting is useless by itself. It's also much more healthy to not run on flat surfaces.
#64 to #61 - anon (05/14/2013) [-]
you're joking right?
I refuse to believe anyone can be this ignorant.

Lifting isn't useless by itself, I have no idea where you got that from but it's pretty clear you don't lift weights. I can agree that it's important to do some cardio for general health, but it doesn't matter if you swim or run inside or outside dude...
User avatar #65 to #64 - rainbowrush ONLINE (05/14/2013) [-]
It's not good to run too much inside. Lifting is good with other stuff, but you need the other stuff. I don't lift much, but I do lift, as it's a good way to train strength. There is no reason for going to the gym, tho. A friend of mine ran a lot, and just did pullups and similar for strength. It depends very much on what you want to focus on, of course.

#69 to #65 - anon (05/14/2013) [-]
If you want a good body you have to lift heavy weights, it's as simple as that.
Bodyweight exercises and cardio don't get people big. Obviously if endurance is their main focus then they wouldn't want to be too bulky anyway.
User avatar #72 to #69 - rainbowrush ONLINE (05/14/2013) [-]
I don't like too bulky, and prefer some sort of equilibrium. I noticed I worded myself bad earlier, so you might have gotten my believes wrong.

If you swim, run or go skiing once or twice a week, you could be working on so much strength you want and it being as good as every other focus. Depending on what result you're after.
User avatar #117 to #72 - alexthebest (05/14/2013) [-]
I think we're getting your believes just fine.

People should do whichever they prefer, since you're much more likely to keep up with a routine you enjoy.

Also, people don't get too bulky by accident. Anyone can lift weights without getting bulky.
User avatar #155 to #117 - rainbowrush ONLINE (05/14/2013) [-]
If you lift a lot, you will get big. As I said several times, but people ignore, it all depends on what results you're after.
#125 to #69 - adamks (05/14/2013) [-]
>Good body
Probably not.
User avatar #66 to #58 - toocheesy (05/14/2013) [-]
That's not true. You can train inside a gym and still be in just as good shape, possibly even better. For instance, there are treadmills, TRX exercises, squat and bench stations sometimes even clean stations if the place is good, aerobic exercises, swimming and the like. If you know how to manipulate dumbbells correctly, you can work the whole body. The only difference between exercising inside to exercising outside is that everything that can possible help you to reach your goal is easily accessible and it cost money. My friends and I do parkour so working outside is fun, but it doesn't mean you'll be in better shape than those who work out inside.
User avatar #70 to #66 - rainbowrush ONLINE (05/14/2013) [-]
It really depends on what you want to focus on. I, myself like endurance and all round training more, as do some of my athlete friends. They train a lot in the gym, but much more outside, as that's much more efficient for what they do.

Don't run too much on treadmills, it will kill your knees and more. As long as you don't overkill, it shouldn't be a problem for most people, tho.

I would lastly point out that I derped when I used generally when I really meant all-round, instead of strength which you focus a lot more on in gyms.
#74 to #70 - toocheesy (05/14/2013) [-]
You know what? This has got me inspired. I'm going to go run right now, then later I will go lift. Cheers.

For me, and for many people, the gym is a place to go, somewhere to get away. When life treats you like **** , you just want a place where you can give no ***** , and no one else gives any ***** , and you just relax and hot tub, or take all your frustration out on the iron.

For many people, I think especially overweight people (not me) it is more what the gym symbolizes that is what's important.

Pay $1250 for equipment or pay $10/month to use the equipment?
#56 to #38 - iamphoenix (05/14/2013) [-]
The only place you'll be paying 10$ for a 'gym' is Planet Fitness, which is not worthy of consideration.

You can get an old barbell, a bench, make a power rack and get a weight stack for ~$600 if you're smart. That will last you for decades.
#151 to #38 - anon (05/14/2013) [-]
Crunch is the best for what you pay. Their annual fee is high, but they have cheap enrollment and it's only 10 bucks a month. They have plenty of weights too. Anybody reading this, please for the love of god do not go to 24 hour. They charge way too much for what they offer and their policy is ridiculous.

Its called a convenience cost. You want to lift/run on a treadmill/anything under the sun but don't have your own equipment or have the space for it. So you pay a monthly fee to go to a location and spend as much time as you need with a varying number of machines.

I mean really, with this logic we could all argue that being charged for our water and food is stupid because we can collect it all ourselves.
