I guess you could say he doesn't want the clothes to appeal to the wider market

I think people who justify being fat are wrong.
User avatar #159 to #29 - rhetoricalfunny (05/12/2013) [-]
How about a little bit curvy. I mean, no one needs to tell us that obese people aren't exactly sightly, and they know it more than anybody, and most of the time they're trying to do something about it.

But then there are people who are more or less at a healthy body weight, who are being told they're fat.

It's a self image problem. We call people fat who aren't fat. And then they think they're fat.
User avatar #163 to #159 - duvallwhitey (05/12/2013) [-]
I think curvy is very VERY attractive. But when it gets to the point of utter disgust, thats where it is bad.
User avatar #165 to #163 - rhetoricalfunny (05/12/2013) [-]
Like I said, no one needs to tell anyone that obese people are rather unsightly.
#287 to #165 - anon (05/13/2013) [-]
Indeed, it's self explanitory, it doesn't need to be said.
User avatar #173 to #29 - obese ONLINE (05/12/2013) [-]
I disagree I think fat people tend to be hot as **** .

Skinny people are too within their mold. They lack character. Definition. Expression. Animation. They have got little to grab or squeeze. People with too much muscle look like insects and those who are thin look like the dead. And lastly, the ones who ARE waaay too overweight and I don't mean "fat" I mean, the gigantic horrid smelling disease riddled people are sick with their own being that they comfortingly and gladly accept genetic failure and decide to live their pathetic existences in their own happiness. Which is the best way to wallow. Then you have the right amount of meat on one's bones, which imo is perfect.

In case of TLDR:
Your perception of quality and morality are both subjective to your ideals.
User avatar #177 to #173 - duvallwhitey (05/12/2013) [-]
So, I could say:
The fat have become so common that fat people have started to find them attractive?
User avatar #182 to #177 - obese ONLINE (05/12/2013) [-]
I assume people have decided to embrace their desires instead of letting the majority of the population dictate what's on their agenda. I think this is a step forward. It's like society stepped out of the closet.

I agree, but the same goes for being too skinny.

It's wrong to justify being unhealthy in general. I eat **** food and I'm lazy as **** . It's no justification, just the cold hard truth.

I'm just gonna copy and paste an old comment.

I didn't have a problem saying that he won't make plus-sized clothes. That's completely his call. What I didn't like is that he said people who aren't considered the "cool kids" at school have no business shopping at his stores. That's a really douchey thing to say that this guy wants to make sure that there's a line between people who are considered cool and uncool at school and only one side is buying his clothes. I used to get bullied a lot back in middle school and it was not fun. The fact that this guy supports that is what pisses me off. He pretty much indirectly encouraged bullying with that statement. Also, I believe he said he wanted only aesthetically pleasing (aka hot) people buying his clothes, right? Well, to be honest, the dude isn't exactly what you would call good-looking.
#152 to #129 - gokupwns (05/12/2013) [-]
Just me that think the guy had some serious self confidence issues when he was young and most likely got bullied like **** , so is now resorting to this kind of **** ?
User avatar #82 to #44 - herpderpstrom (05/12/2013) [-]
At least he is striving toward his ideal. It's hard to change the fundamental look of your face (plastic surgery goes wrong quite often), but if a fatty were to strive toward becoming fit for long enough, he/she would succeed.
User avatar #86 to #82 - ainsley (05/12/2013) [-]
I had hyperthyroidism when I was younger and was gaining wait despite my strict diets and exercise regimens.
I strived to lose wait for a few years before I actually started losing any weight at all.
Don't assume that any fatty is fat and can change that by striving to be fit.
There are different circumstances.
User avatar #92 to #86 - herpderpstrom (05/12/2013) [-]
Well of course there are exceptions to everything and I'm sorry you were sick when you were younger.
However, this thread is mainly about whether it is wrong of A&F to not sell XL clothing or not. I agree that the CEO seems like an asshole, but I don't think there's anything wrong with their startegy. There are plenty of short people who have to pass up buying clothes they like because their size isn't available. That doesn't make them (well, most of them) bitch about being discriminated by the clothing company.
My point in this case was that there are people who have obstacles that are way harder to overcome than some extra weight.
Obviously there are cases where you can't do anything about it, but when that happens you find an alternative; there's no lack of clothes that fit chubby people on the market.
User avatar #96 to #92 - herpderpstrom (05/12/2013) [-]
>Unless you are suggesting that the vast majority of the fat people on this earth have hyperthyroidism.

**mrloki rolled a random image posted in comment #283 at 4D movies ** I totally agree that he's not wrong, just an asshole. If someone wants to create a nazi store that doesn't sell their nazi clothes to black or jew people, that's fine, the guy is withing his freedom of being a prejudice filled asshole. So, if someone says "my store will allways have 10 steps to enter because I don't want any cripple in there" again, he's just being an asshole. FREEDOM COMES WITH ASSHOLE'S RIGHTS!

#15 to #13 - curses (05/12/2013) [-]
He has a business motto and sticks to it. Fat people can buy somewhere else if it bothers them so much.

Much like how people won't whine about companies who only sell clothes for women or children. He markets to washboard stomach people and that does not make him an asshole.
User avatar #16 to #15 - captainromance (05/12/2013) [-]
it's not the same at all. if companies stopped selling **** to ugly people he'd be ******
#17 to #16 - curses (05/12/2013) [-]
But the thing is, he isn't trying to market to any ugly guy. He's trying to get the pretty looking people. He's obviously not in bankrupt yet so this business model seems to work.
User avatar #19 to #17 - captainromance (05/12/2013) [-]
no one with an IQ higher than 80 wil buy anything from him for now on because he's just a cunt
#21 to #19 - curses (05/12/2013) [-]
Why?

He already only sell clothes for good looking people and it is working. Most people will not care. The good looking people will know that THAT store got clothes for them and will buy there if they feel like it.

Do you really think they care if the owner doesn't like fat people? :/ The good looking probably don't care about fat people. Fat people can buy at Walmart or other stores.
User avatar #23 to #21 - captainromance (05/12/2013) [-]

User avatar #162 to #15 - rhetoricalfunny (05/12/2013) [-]
It's not about the business, most people couldn't care less. He's contributing to a stereotype that slightly overweight, or not skinny people aren't beautiful. That's why he's an asshole.

Yea, even he acknowledges his looks. It is stated he can't actually work in his stores directly. I personally think people need to get over it. It's just clothing, why is this all a problem now if it has always been that way?
User avatar #210 to #204 - ladyxa (05/12/2013) [-]
yeah, i really couldnt give less of a **** about a&f but some of the statements this guy's made deserve all the drama theyve caused. basically hes kind of an arsehole and deserves the *********
still dont give a flying **** about the clothes though.

Point taken, when people act like assholes, **** happens. That much I can understand, but getting mad because a place doesn't carry your size is just crazy.
#232 to #212 - anon (05/12/2013) [-]
It's not that they don't carry the size, it's that they view people as too subhuman to be deserving of their majestic products

and it's not just fat people
User avatar #237 to #232 - nevrit (05/12/2013) [-]
Like I was saying, it is ok to get mad about the views, but if you are the person selling YOUR product, you should be allowed to choose who it gets sold to. This ******** of today about "oh he offended me so I'm gonna sue unless he changes his market" pisses me off. They have a target market of good clothes, meant for good looking people who care about their looks. You can buy their stuff, but they have a specific target, and aren't going to bend to fit everyones needs because it hurts their feelings. I get why people are upset, I really do. Seriously though, people need to move on.
User avatar #219 to #212 - ladyxa (05/12/2013) [-]
yeah course, i agree. id say go shop somewhere else if it offends people so much. and its not like its the end of the ******* world, its just clothes yknow

Surely it makes sense, because in a weird way it forces fat people to have another drive to lose all that weight. Lose some weight fatty................
User avatar #105 - TheShortbusDriver (05/12/2013) [-]

I wear A and F because I like the brand (they make nice clothes) but I have divided feelings about this. On the one hand I feel that everyone should get a fair share in life for everything including clothing brands, but at the same time obesity is a severe problem in the western world so why should things be made to constantly fit for them?

But anyway this isn't their only controversial marketing ploy, they also refuse to give clothes to the homeless because they feel it would ruin their image.

it is interesting that A and F does not give away clothes to the poor but it is certainly not the only company. i dont see homeless men walking around with polo ralph lauren shirts. maybe we should shift the blame away from A and F and point it towards high class companies instead....

Okay, saying "I won't sell to black peoples or gays" would actually be something, but when you say "put down the ******* candy bar and start jogging if you want to wear this" there's absolutely nothing ******* wrong with that. Being fat isn't something that's ******* natural and these people deserve some special ******* treatment. You're fat because you're a lazy cunt, end of story.

Also, A&F is basically selling you a $10 shirt for $200 dollars because it has the ******* name written somewhere on it, not really that worth it in the first place.
#143 to #138 - anon (05/12/2013) [-]
Retaining weight is the natural response to keep from starving back when meals could be days or weeks in between. I'm not saying it justifies being fat but it is natural.

It's not normal no, but seeing as through 99% of human history a good amount of peoples have been starved and malnourished it's not exactly hard to see why the natural urge to stuff as much **** as you can find into your piehole and retain that nutrients has been a desirable genetic trait.

I don't really care about what A&F sell, because A. I cannot afford anything in there, and B. I won't be able to fit it anyway. I am not butt hurt at all, it's my problem not theirs.

However, (And I've mentioned this before) that a girl who worked at A&F was forced to work in the stock room because of her prosthetic arm. She was allowed to wear a cardigan which goes against their 'look policy' (Look it up) and was told to take it off. When she said she couldn't, as it hid the join between her prosthetic and real arm, she was taken off the shop floor until the winter uniform arrives.

I find the company extremely superficial, and the image they give out isn't really a favourable one. Dress to make yourself feel fabulous, don't stress if you can't fit into a Medium.

I can see where you are going with this, but that is still a logical fallacy: correlation is not causation. Skinny people can be unhealthy as well, but that does not extend to say that all skinny people are unhealthy.

didn't say that. I'm saying that everyone is trying to turn this into some 'crusade for health' when it is nothing of the sort.
