It's not a repost of that pic though. Check the font style. I've probably seen this pic a thousand times, but this pic surely was not stolen from that link.

Laptops aren't that good for gaming. Sure, easy to move around but that means you doesn't have well-prepared gaming spot where you would be as comfortable as in front of PC.

User avatar #76 to #72 - himyouknowwho (05/12/2013) [-]
doesn't that depend on which laptop you use?

i know it's harder, if even possible to upgrade a laptop, but i got a gaming laptop and i am pretty happy of it.
User avatar #93 to #76 - toughactintinactin (05/12/2013) [-]
It's certainly possible to upgrade a laptop as long as it isn't a macbook. The downside is it really needs to be done by a professional, and the parts are usually very specific to your case and MOBO. You won't be able to get desktop specs, simply because of space constraints, but some laptops can be pretty beastly.
User avatar #110 to #93 - thenez (05/12/2013) [-]
Iv'e upgraded laptops before, it's not that hard. you just have to make sure your new components are rated to the same TDP (heat output) as your older parts, and have the same slots for RAM and GPU and socket for CPU.
User avatar #113 to #110 - toughactintinactin (05/12/2013) [-]
Well im guessing you have an above average understanding of the inner components of a PC though right? To someone who doesn't have much experience i would recommend a professional as opposed to DIY when upgrading a laptop.
User avatar #116 to #93 - theorangefox ONLINE (05/12/2013) [-]
It's also pricier because of the work that has to be carried out, again, by a professional.
User avatar #152 to #76 - ledd (05/12/2013) [-]
It is somehow true yet the most comfortable postiion is when top border of the screen is at the height of your eyes and keyboard and mouse are at the height that lets you hold arms around 90 degrees. You either hold hands high to have a good view and get tired faster than on PC or you have comfortable position for hands but not neck since you have to look down.

small screen
User avatar #125 to #98 - joshlol (05/12/2013) [-]
17" 1920x1080 is better than a 24" running the same resolution.
I still wouldn't use a laptop for gaming though.
User avatar #127 to #125 - fizzzum (05/12/2013) [-]
still a very small screen, i guess it's a matter of opinion, i want a damn big screen to my computer, just sayin
User avatar #129 to #127 - joshlol (05/12/2013) [-]
A bigger screen running the same resolution just means lower PPI. The only time I hate smaller screens is when they have a lower resolution, lots of laptops are still built with a ****** 1366x768 resolution.
User avatar #135 to #129 - cormy (05/12/2013) [-]
I'm confused, what's wrong with 1366x768 resolution?
User avatar #136 to #135 - joshlol (05/12/2013) [-]
It's hard to do anything productive on such a small resolution.
User avatar #140 to #136 - cormy (05/12/2013) [-]
What do you mean? I don't see any pixels and the screen isn't exactly small...
Is 15.6" small to you?
#142 to #140 - joshlol (05/12/2013) [-]
I have no problem with the physical size of the screen my issue is that I am used to using a 2560x1440 monitor so 1366x768 limits the amount of on-screen space I have at any given time.

pic related, 1366x768 inside a 2560x1440 resolution.
User avatar #151 to #142 - cormy (05/12/2013) [-]
Can't you just stretch it to fit the screen...? I really don't have any idea what I'm talking about though, don't know how dpi, resolution, screen size and ppi are all connected.
User avatar #153 to #151 - joshlol (05/12/2013) [-]
sorry man I am explaining it bad.. What I mean that a higher resolution = more room for more things. So when I am programming I can have three windows on the screen at the same time looking at them all without the inconvenience of having to swap between them etc. On a lower resolution they don't fit. Hope I am explaining it ok.
User avatar #154 to #153 - cormy (05/12/2013) [-]
But can't you just like... Resize your windows? =\
And if you change the resolution for more to fit... Doesn't the text and stuff get smaller?
User avatar #155 to #154 - joshlol (05/12/2013) [-]
higher resolution = smaller text but the highest resolution your monitor supports the text will look best, there is no point having a smaller resolution than your monitor supports because the text will look distorted.

Resize windows = less being displayed on each window
User avatar #156 to #155 - cormy (05/13/2013) [-]
I'm not really seeing the advantage of a larger resolution if you don't have a large screen, you just end up with a lot of small text and whatnot. Maybe it's good for... Gaming I guess? Monitoring lots of things? But kind of pointless for text-based stuff... I myself never have more than one window open unless I'm copying text from one to the other that I can't copypaste, in which case I want the text to be big a legible. I know there are settings to change text size, while everything is miniaturized do you increase your text size?
How does the text distort when you go to a smaller resolution than your monitor supports? Wouldn't it only distort if you try and stretch it to a higher resolution than your monitor supports?
I think I'm confusing myself more =\
User avatar #157 to #156 - joshlol (05/13/2013) [-]
Oh I see, a larger resolution on a smaller screen is just more PPI, it looks a lot nicer, sharper and crisper. There are other actors too like how far away you sit from the screen (a 52" tv has the same resolution as a typical 24" monitor so if you sat that close it would just look ridiculous)

The advantages for me are reading long paragraphs of text, on a higher ppi display it seems to alleviate a lot of eye strain I have. That said, a 24" monitor running 1920x1080 is fine , I just prefer to have a higher ppi.

As for the distorting thing I should clarify, when choosing a lower resolution than your monitor supports there are different aspect ratios to choose from, so if you choose a resolution where the aspect ratio does not match your monitors then the text will look wrong. So for example if I run a 4:3 aspect ratio on a 16:9 monitor it won't match up right and it will stretch the pixels wrong. You can experiment with this yourself just choosing a few different lower resolutions.
User avatar #158 to #157 - cormy (05/13/2013) [-]
How big is your screen? I can't actually change my resolution any higher than 1366x768, is that something that is determined by the screen size or just the parameters of the screen? Like a better screen that is the same size can have a larger resolution?
#159 to #158 - joshlol (05/13/2013) [-]
27inch, I can go as low as 1024x768 if I wanted, would just look **** though
User avatar #130 to #129 - fizzzum (05/12/2013) [-]

Bloody hell, nice guess for my name.
Unfortunately I am in the UK and newegg don't ship over here, but that does look like a pretty kick ass laptop and I'll have a look to see if an equivalent is sold on other sites over here, thanks!
User avatar #104 to #101 - someponynew (05/12/2013) [-]
Man. You're not gonna find a better deal.
Seriously. A Samsung Series 7 Gamer is 1.8k or 1.5k
One graphics card, one step better than that one.

Also, the y500 has this thing called an ultrabay. You can take the 2nd card out and replace it with a fan, hard drive caddy, or... something else... it's not coming to me right now.
But yeah, this thing is a gaming laptop for about 1.2K
It's a ******* STEAL.
#94 to #91 - gaaay (05/12/2013) [-]

If you aren't from the UK I'm not sure if they do international shipping, but they're pretty much the best quality pre-built laptops you can get for their price.

Don't buy Razer or Alienware. They are good laptops but cost upwards of £2k each. It's like buying from Hollister, you're paying for the brand name more than anything else.
User avatar #102 to #94 - tobituary (05/12/2013) [-]
Favorited the site, thanks :)
#103 to #102 - gaaay (05/12/2013) [-]
Don't worry about it, I got my PC off of Novatech, and it's brilliant (and about half the price of a Razer one with the same specs). I'm guessing you're UK then?

Depending on my AS grades this august, I'll either push for medicine if not, it's probably gonna be Biomedical Science/Physics.
Either way, I'm currently looking into Manchester and Kings College for the medical related courses, and South Hampton for physics. But like I said, AS levels are around the corner (starting tomorrow actually, lol) and I'm going to be doing some proper research once their over

I know get a lot of **** for it, but I have an Alienware M17x and I love it. Sure, money could have been spent better, but it wasn't wasted. It was a graduation present which I paid half of, and I was young and didn't really look into it other options as much as I should have. But 3 years later this laptop still kicks every game's ass, and what's better, as an artist I have no limits but my own. Plus, my Steam library is with me when I travel and have extra time in the student lounge.

So you can say the dude with a small dick is overcompensating with his Lambo. He still has a Lambo. And THIS guy with a small dick is overcompensating with a bomb ass laptop.

User avatar #61 to #60 - sebthebrony (05/12/2013) [-]
Most people don't like alienware because it's overpriced, not because money can buy better. There are way better laptops out there which cost less, you paid a lot of money for flashy leds
