well they aren't welded, they screw together and are fastened with giant wrenches to make sure they don't come apart in the hole, but I'm pretty sure they turn the bit in a way to always tighten the locks between each metal rod.
BUT why drill down when your drill will pierce the heavens?

It seems it uses water to make all the bits at the bottom into a slurry, which is then sucked through tubes inside the drill to cool the tip and pump it out.
