Putin's basically one of the most corrupt and power-hungry people on Earth. Currently Russia is similar to a European version of an African dictatorship. It's one of the richest countries on earth because of oil and diamonds (Russia has both in huge amounts) but almost no money makes it past a net of corrupt local, regional, and national officials. Putin's government basically jails (or worse) any serious attempts at an opposition (such as the case of Alexei Navalny, google him if you need more info) and Putin has an iron grip on almost all media. He did some good things for Russia back in the early 2000's, but that's all in the past. Now it's all about power and money.
User avatar #294 to #293 - srskate (05/10/2013) [-]
Such a shame, because he is quite the badass.

I now also recall that he won the russian polls with 140% of the vote.
User avatar #296 to #294 - Hreidmar ONLINE (05/10/2013) [-]
See, that's the thing. He's not nearly the badass he's portrayed as. He didn't legitimately go diving for relics, those were planted about 5 minutes beforehand by officials. Yes, he hunts and does martial arts, but he's by far not the best or even in the top 25% of both trades/skills. A lot of the images of him riding horses, wrestling, diving, etc... are just media manipulations.

That being said, he could still probably crush my head like a beer can, but he's not the badass he's portrayed as.

User avatar #403 to #397 - lolollo ONLINE (05/10/2013) [-]
That doesn't mean democracy died when he took office. There's going to be more than one way to achieve a certain goal, and you're not going to agree with all of them, but that doesn't mean no one will. Actually, the simple fact that yo u do dislike most of the decisions he's made is more proof that democracy still works, because we're able to have someone as president who makes decisions you may or may not agree with (people that's mwhat the MAJORITY of people wanted.)

I realize you were just trying to make a joke, but that was just some horrible form. You can't just walk in, make a politically charged statement, and then expect people to get your "joke" when just the statement alone would barely work as a punchline in itself.

Most newspapers had absolutely no influence over any of this and would not be affected, rather it was just what they were told to tell as news.
