Quite a few people on the left have suggested things to save or earn money such as having a tighter budget on the military, as we have a ridiculously large one that dwarfs every other country, yet it's immediately classified as unamerican by the right and things like it never get passed. I'm not saying military is unimportant, just that that is an example of a feasible suggestion that is overlooked.
User avatar #141 to #68 - durkadurka ONLINE (05/05/2013) [-]
Why are only cuts to the military being advocated? It's just one chunk of a much larger problem. The problem can only be solved by eliminating waste in ALL areas.

There's obviously places in which the military should be cut, but it should not be the only thing cut or the first thing cut.
User avatar #154 to #141 - posalad (05/05/2013) [-]
Oh I didn't mean for it to sound that way, I was just giving an example of one of many. There of course are other areas that are constantly being debated on in terms of cuts suggested by both parties, military is just a rather easy example to demonstrate waste and over expenditure within our government.
User avatar #175 to #154 - keiishiyama (05/05/2013) [-]
I would never trust a politician to cut military spending. The only people who know where that money is being wasted are the people out on the frontlines watching it get spent.

the ******* american "right" has nothing to do with a real right-wing politics (like hitler's lol) but is merely a circlejerk of stuck up backwards morons and hillbillies.
I'm a straight German nationalist, but if I was American, I'd vote for Obama.
User avatar #203 to #115 - asschwitz (05/06/2013) [-]
That's pretty ignorant of you to say. You generalize all American Conservatives as right-wing extremists, when that's not true at all. I suggest researching more on a foreign countries politics before making ignorant comments about them. What worse if you're being thumbed up for it, indicating the people actually agree with you. FunnyJunk is so liberal.
User avatar #215 to #203 - wisdombranch (05/06/2013) [-]
Funnyjunk, IMHO tends to have a conservative brain and a liberal heart. Mind is turned toward the right, only when presented with enough reasonable evidence to tell the heart to **** the hell up because it obviously knows nothing. But in ignorance, the heart makes the greatest noise.
User avatar #216 to #215 - asschwitz (05/06/2013) [-]
Maybe so. Political posts and debates are generally not friendly for my more conservative way of thinking.
User avatar #192 to #68 - thereoncewasaman (05/05/2013) [-]
Cutting military spending is the most feasible and most logical place to start, but like you said its seen as unpatriotic to suggest that. Somehow the citizens of the US would rather cut funding to schools and health care than cut military spending, which is bordering on lunacy. It doesn't help when somehow politics gets caught up on things that shouldn't even be an issue like abortion and gay marriage, completely distracting everyone from these real problems.
User avatar #213 to #192 - wisdombranch (05/06/2013) [-]
On the subject of schools: America over-funds their schools, while not giving them enough attention and not allowing the educational system to improve itself.

Teachers in America: bottom of the intellectual barrel (often, and only a 4-year degree is necessary.)
Teachers in Norway: Cream of the crop (only top 10% of 6-year degrees.)
User avatar #225 to #213 - thereoncewasaman (05/06/2013) [-]
The problem with school funding is that it goes to the wrong places. Also yes the teachers are not treated as well as they should be, considering they are instructing the next generation of the work force, and in this day and age we need highly intellectual and technically savvy people, and the school system is not producing that. But I just gave that as an example of what cutting military spending could go to.

Americas huge military and it's foreign policy makes ******* bank for those involved in the military industrial complex.
These same huge corporations have powerful lobbyists in washington, and either own or are closely associated with every major news outlet, so whenever a cut to military spending is mentioned - all the media that they and their friends control turns against it, their lobbyists kick up hell, and it never happens.
This is also why the media supports America going to war or intervening so much in other countries, just look how they're getting everyone ready for a war on Iran and/or Syria.
It's interesting to note that Iran has never been proven to have nuclear weapons, or to even be attempting to construct them, and they allow UN and international inspectors to visit their nuclear facilities.
Israel, on the other hand, has got nuclear weapons, and blocks all access to their nuclear facilities.
Look even deeper, and a huge proportion of the chairmen and board members of the corporations mentioned earlier have dual Israeli-American citizenships.
Now you start to see what's really going on.

-military spending could be cut if we stopped interventionism as a foreign policy
-social security needs to be reformed; it was never meant to be a retirement plan
-welfare needs to be reduced; people are heavily abusing it, and people have less incentive to work hard
-food stamps need to be reformed; same reason as welfare
-the market for drugs needs to be dealt with because it creates a black market which leads to gang activity and crime; this could be done by legalizing drugs and allowing cheap production to compete with foreign drug suppliers; gangs would simply wither away. The leftover money could be spend on educating people on drugs and providing mandatory rehab for those who have shown they have a problem with drugs.
-by fixing the US's drug problem it would fix a majority of the crime problem and reduce spending on law enforcement and public courts
-by fixing the drug problem, cartels from south of the boarder would loose their influence and wither away, thus stopping so many mexicans fleeing their country and crossing the boarder illegally.
#224 to #83 - anon (05/06/2013) [-]
Part of the problem with social security is that people get more out of it than they put in. People also live much longer now than they did before, so rather than retiring at 60 and living to 65-70 people are still retiring at 60 and living to 80-90.
User avatar #201 to #83 - brettyoke (05/06/2013) [-]
I like most of your points, but I disagree with gangs "whithering away" after drugs are legalized. Most gangs started during prohibition, with the sale of alcohol. After alcohol was legalized and they could no longer compete, they didn't whither away, they found a new product (drugs). My best guess, is that drugs are legalized, we'll probably have issues with gangs selling illegal fire arms or something along those lines. Not to mention, legalizing all drugs (as I assume you meant) will result in extensive health issues, and the tab will probably end up with the government through medicaid and the like.
#209 to #201 - pebar (05/06/2013) [-]
That's why is counter productive to simply criminalize things instead of treating the root cause. As for drug use becoming a problem, that's why mandatory rehab should be included for those who have a problem. Drugs could still be taxed with prices being kept far below black market levels and the money saved with the misguided war on drugs (instead of on the market for drugs) could probably pay for the rehab. The drug dealers could move into the business sector because they obviously have a talent for it and the economy would grow even further. Also, education can go a long way. If the demand for drugs is dealt with, people wouldn't OD in the gutter and they could get back to work.

As for guns, they're pretty self regulating. Government directly putting pressure on gangs through brute force causes the violence to become more intense. If you deal with the gang problem properly, guns wouldn't be a problem.

You know that most religions are conservative thats why you are thumbed down pretty much couse heres quoite alot of overbelievers that think nothing must change.
Thumbed you up cause you are right if there were no conservatives we'd have alot more advanced technology.

This is from wikipedia: Conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others, called reactionaries, oppose modernism and seek a return to "the way things were".

fear of science happens on both sides of the political spectrum, it's more about being an idiot than your political stripes. christian scientists, creationists, michel bachmann's belief that vaccines can cause downs syndrome, etc are the right wing counterparts.

Unfortunately the whole "vaccines cause autism" thing was based on falsified data. The scientist has since lost his credentials. So many wasted lives because people thought that their kid was better off not getting vaccinated.

Its kinda funny for me.
I look back at people I was hanging in college and most were really moderate from both sides. But there were few hard core right wingers and hard core hippies.
Right wing ones were doing business classes, talked about how rich pay too much tax, how poor are drag on the resources, how healthcare has to be only private.
Now (at 30) to the one they work low level office jobs, bitch at how they are living paycheck to paycheck and can't afford good healthcare.
The hippies on the other hand. Two started an organic blackberry winery, they net more then three times what I do. One is working for IBM designing new chips and one... well one lives with his grandma and smokes more pot then I'd believe humanly possible.
Its really odd that my hippie friends ended up making most money and paying most taxes, while those that were so much into money became just more of the drones.
User avatar #152 to #13 - kroople (05/05/2013) [-]

We were all members of SCA, one of the rightwingers was a best swordsman I ever met. They never weasled out of paying for food or drinks and they were really fun to be around.
Just because someone thinks differently from you politically does not mean they are not good friends.

Partially yes, but also there is a factor of why you are doing a job.
If it really is just "Give me money and I'll do **** for you" you will only ever be average at it, and average does not cut it.
My successful hippie friends all got into doing things because they loved it. They wanted to do organic blackberries, and wine and other products from them for years. They planned it out and done it, and money came as a response to great product they developed.
On the other side my right wing friends went into business because they wanted to make money. No passion, no vision, just money. They will probably pull themselves up to middle management, and make decent money.
But without vision you can't really excel.

What about the "Robin Hood tax" where all international financial transactions are taxed at about 1 cent US. It's estimated this could raise up to about 400 billion dollars which could be put aside to help mitigate crises, yet at the same time it's thought it would have very little negative effect on GWP.

Anyway **** off OP as if you pay tax, you 12 year old **** cunt.

Who would collect the tax? Some good and holy international organization who would use their fairness and justice to distribute that money to the poor people of the world? No, it would be some political powerhouse who somehow managed to take that taxation power for themselves--probably by force--and then give that money to their friends and special interests as they saw fit.

Obama has been throwing away peoples money and has been increasing debt. Then he wants to tax corporations to death thus killing jobs. Then with more people unemployed and on welfare, they try to increase taxes further thus creating a circle of unemployment. When that fails, they use deficit spending to try give the economy a boost. Assuming this works (no guarantees), the economy is back where it started before this liberal ******** but its left with trillions more debt, all of which could've been avoided.
