I call ******** on this. It may not be eating the puppies, but for sure it wasn't DEFENDING them. It was defending its own hole, when cornered and stressed. There are very little cases of offspring-protection behavoirs in reptiles, and for sure they don't extend to other species' offsprings.
You can AWWWW and CUTEEE all you want, but ths snake wasn't protecting them, and it would've eventually done lot worse to the puppies.

I mean, if I was a predator, I wouldn't wait around for 2 days, no sleep, AND nourish the prey.
#20 to #2 - John Cena (05/05/2013) [-]
maybe it was taking care of it so its babies could eat them later
User avatar #98 to #2 - anonomoz ONLINE (05/05/2013) [-]
maybe the snake didnt think the pups were threats so it just ignored it, not trying to do anything, but when a walking ape (humans) came into the hole, it attacked the ape because it sensed danger from it, and the ape then perceived that the snake tried to protect puppies
User avatar #9 to #2 - zight (05/04/2013) [-]
so it decided to do nothing for 2 whole days? amazing
User avatar #28 to #9 - Encarna (05/05/2013) [-]
Well snakes can go without food for a silly amount of time. For all we know it had recently eaten and couldn't stomach those pups and was saving them for later.
User avatar #47 to #28 - zight (05/05/2013) [-]
i like the use of the word silly, and true, but its a first i hear a snake actually defending some other animals

Reptiles do have emotions, though they are on a much simpler scale than most mammals. It is possible, though extremely unlikely, that this snake may be an anomaly that developed protective feelings towards the pups. I'm not saying it is at all likely, but anomalies do happen, which eventually leads to evolution.

a new breed of dog protecting snakes that keep your dogs safe while your dogs keep you safe. no one can stop you now
User avatar #116 to #13 - princessthymicorn (05/05/2013) [-]
Ha, much simpler scale.
Because they're reptiles.
Reptiles have scales.
I'll let myself out.

On a side note, why does everyone seem to have the hots for Gingers in Harry Potter? Snape, Harry, James, Hermione, the Patel girls, and a bunch more.
User avatar #177 to #67 - meganinja (05/05/2013) [-]
because there's so many gingers, any love interest is, by probability, likely to have gingers.
#147 - unclegrumpybastard (05/05/2013) [-]
Unlikely, the photo looks real but the snake was probably just not hungry or threatened, plus how could it care for the dogs and what exactly was it protecting them from down a well? Most snakes don't care for their young once hatched anyway, why would it care about another species?

User avatar #154 to #147 - nephritho (05/05/2013) [-]
king Cobra's eat snakes and small mammals.
And I assume that the cobra had his poison glands removed.
So even if it attacked it would only be a small sting.
User avatar #188 to #154 - ninjasquirle (05/05/2013) [-]
True animals rights groups occasionally bring up the fact the vast majority of snake charmers in India remove the venom glands to prevent being bitten if they **** up charming the snake. However considering that wells are subterranean more than likely their sound were being amplified into the local soil via the well and that probably just got the snake curious. King Cobra's while very defensive and aggressive for snake species they like all snake don't seek out things they can't eat they just react with venom as defense but if the snake thinks the puppies are not aggressive and too big to eat or was already full then the snake probably was trying to leave but being in a well and all... Mainly if the snake wasn't hungry but curious and it didn't see the puppies as a threat then it has no reason to waste venom on something it can hardly interact with.
User avatar #204 to #188 - nephritho (05/05/2013) [-]
We can only assume what really happened.
It could be a guy that just took pictures of a cobra with those puppies posted on the web and people started to make stories around it.
User avatar #205 to #204 - ninjasquirle (05/05/2013) [-]
That is also true but considering how close together they are calm enough to suggest a longer term of interaction and in biology its well known snakes actually size up their prey before moving to see if its even digestible and the puppies look far to big for a Cobra to swallow. My guess is the snake was attracted by sound, fell into the well and discovered two non aggressive puppies to big to digest. So being an ectothermic animal it probably just slithered up two them over time to just gather some heat from them, after all snakes can go quite some time in between meals so preserving heat by relaxing near to two puppies would just conserve energy.
User avatar #206 to #205 - nephritho (05/05/2013) [-]
That is a good argument
However cobra's are deaf (like most snakes) as they simple (for example) look at the movement of the flute of a snake charmer it "hypnotism" them.
however they might feel infrasound.
What could happen is that the cobra might see the warmth of the puppies with thermal vision.
Who knows the guy that made the picture could have thrown the puppies in the well while there was a cobra in it or the other way around.
Humans can be pretty sadistic and ****** up.
like have been shown on so many video's of people beating a dog with a stick or throw off a bridge/cliff

well theres no evidence the snake didn't strike the puppies just after the picture was taken and kill both of them, the point is it was unlikely to be looking after them because of emotions as the txt suggests

I just saying my own theory.
As I know lot of snake charmers in India cut out the venom glands.
There is even a video where a cobra bitten a child in India lucky for the kid it's venom glands were removed.
So it could be the cobra escaped and end up in the well with the puppies.
strikes a few time with it's fangs but unable to kill them because the lack of venom...
