I don't tell anyone they are going to hell, I don't try to convert anyone and I am not a hard core bible bashing fanatic. I am all for gay rights, I like and have tattoos and I do a lot of other stuff that I'm sure the bible did not agree with once upon a time...

Not all Christians are part of the westboro baptist church.

I have a lot of theist friends and we barely ever talk about religion unless it is appropriate, I don't try to insight butt hurt, but anyway seeing as it's relevant: one of the things all Christians do have in common is the belief that anyone who isn't part of their group will be burnt alive for eternity, also to believe that God is just you must also believe that this is justice, this is the main problem I have with religion.

>Say "one of the things all Christians do have in common is the belief that anyone who isn't part of their group will be burnt alive for eternity"
>"All Christians do have in common is the belief"
>"All Christians"

Well... seeing as I am christian and I don't believe that I seem to have found a big flaw in your argument
User avatar #230 to #229 - thebritishguy (05/02/2013) [-]
but it says so in the bible
Revelations 21:8 "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
User avatar #249 to #230 - peggscott (05/02/2013) [-]
Look... I don't think it will really matter what I say at this point, because I don't think you want to listen. But the bible is made up by a lot of different people over many, many years. We are now thousands of years on and times have changed. It also says not to have sex before marriage, something about not getting tattoos, not to eat meat on a Sunday and I'm sure there is something about stoning people to death mixed in with it as well as a lot of other things... However, I am not married but have had sex, I have got tattoos, I ******* love a Sunday roast and I have never stoned someone to death for any reason!!

I do however, go to church, try and be a good person and help others whenever I can, and was by my grandmothers bed side when she got her last rites read to her.

I myself never really got what religion was fully about until that moment when my gran got her last rites read to her. But I think I have a good idea now. It brings people comfort and in many ways a sense of safety. They don't feel alone, like they always have someone to talk to and tell them their troubles and problems.... And I'm fine with that, I think thats great. And I am glad that my gran got comfort out of her religion on her final days.... How can I argue with that?
User avatar #277 to #249 - thebritishguy (05/02/2013) [-]
we have only just started speaking so I don't know why you think I won't listen, how nice it is doesn't change whether it is true or not. If you believe the bible to be true then why do you not believe that I will get thrown into a lake of fire? if you don't believe the bible to be true then why go to church?
I'm not talking about the old Mosaic laws, just about the hell part of the bible.
User avatar #287 to #277 - peggscott (05/03/2013) [-]
I have work tomorrow, I am up in 6 hours. Without meaning to sound mean I really don't want to sit up and talk to someone on the internet about heaven and hell, good and bad, rite and wrong or whatever else might come up.

You are free to thing whatever you want, and thats a beautiful thing. But please chose that freedom of belief to do good... or at least to not try and smite other peoples, because then it looks like you are trying to take away or restrict that persons own belief.

Goodnight

No one is forcing anyone to view this post and its not stating you should become an atheist.

It seems to me, at least when it comes to religion, the FJ definition of "shoving it down your throat" is "express a viewpoint that is different than my own"
#34 to #29 - ichbinlecher (05/02/2013) [-]
On all fronts, I might add. The issue is that people have ceased to be able to discuss ideas without resorting to ad hominem attacks. Some day, the art of rhetoric and logic will return, but for now it seems relatively lost.

I would like to point out that a Christian telling an atheist he is going to hell is also a possible act of love. Sometimes love and tolerance are not the same thing. Think of a parent watching their kids play in the street. The tolerant thing is to let them play their games and do what they want to. The loving this is to tell them to get back in the yard. For the Christian, he fully believes there is an impending danger for those that don't believe - how could he be loving and not warn them of such things.
#52 to #38 - anon (05/02/2013) [-]
This is the biggest bunch of BS I've ever heard.

I guess the Christians throughout history were just loving everyone to death. With swords.
#54 to #52 - ichbinlecher (05/02/2013) [-]
I would like to draw attention to the word possible. WBC is a modern day example of a group that isn't loving (and more appropriate considering the difference in Christianity and Christendom) . But, pretend you wholeheartedly believed that unspeakable horror awaited someone if they didn't change something about themselves. If you loved that person, would you tell them so?
#59 to #54 - anon (05/02/2013) [-]
Yes, of course.

However, if you believed 100% that a random person will be captured by Jabba the Hutt and cast into the Sarlacc pit for their crimes, would you warn them? Or would you keep your schizophrenic fairy tales to yourself?
#65 to #59 - ichbinlecher (05/02/2013) [-]
If I believed it 100%? Yes, of course. That is the thing, we are postulating right now in the hypothetical realm of "Pretend you believed x." There is precisely one action that can be taken in these scenarios if one wants to take the loving route.

Now, if I were to hate you for not believing that Jabba the Hut was going to come after you - then I wasn't truly acting out of love and compassion, was I?

Also, I would like to point out the systematic use of "poisoning the well" that you are using. Rather than even bother trying to talk on even grounds, you call my original post BS and then compare religion to schizophrenia and fairy tales. Why the fear of honest discussion with no mudslinging - it's not like this is a political race or anything.
#71 to #65 - anon (05/02/2013) [-]
You don't like my usage of schizophrenia and fairy tales?

Fine... Auditory hallucination and fictional stories.

I can't talk on even/logical grounds if I feel I'm debating fact with fiction.
#78 to #71 - ichbinlecher (05/02/2013) [-]
Well, your actually debating two opposing philosophical schools. That is probably the first step to figuring out how to approach things. I know when I used to think that my way was provable fact, I had a hard time understanding why people were so dense they couldn't get it. It was only once I realized that I was standing on a slew of suppositions that I never bothered to question that I found out why people disagreed with me. We are starting with different givens, but when you accept them as fact you limit your ability to think the meta thoughts and understand the real point of contention and to even see what your "opponent" is saying.
#125 to #78 - anon (05/02/2013) [-]
Lol.............

I've been on both sides of this. I was a Christian for most of my life. I took the ******** , I ate the ******** , I preached the ******** . Then I finally realized it was ******** . I'm not actually debating anything. Mostly just pointing out ******** . I never claimed anything I said as "the right way". I basically said you're wrong. That's it.

You assume I'm not "open-minded" because I assume certain givens.... Awesome. Everything we know and say about "God" is written in an old book that is a contradiction with binding around it.

I'm not a "meta-thinker" because I've come to a conclusion over the years that religion is ******** ? I was told I was a "meta-thinker" for dropping religion in the first place....

Changing your beliefs is hard, especially when eternal damnation is in the consequences. But that's in your beliefs too. You don't have to burn in hell, but if you believe hard enough, you just might.
#231 to #125 - ichbinlecher (05/02/2013) [-]
It's not that I don't think you are open minded. In fact, I wouldn't desire that really - I am not either - my position won't be swayed here. But I am willing at all times to assume for sake of argument that my position is wrong, or to argue from another person's position. I think it is profitable to be able to do this, and to be willing to, since it lets you not dismiss any truth that may be hidden away in garbage.
#83 to #78 - ichbinlecher (05/02/2013) [-]
*you're, my apologies.
#186 to #38 - walkingdisaster (05/02/2013) [-]
No. Just ******* no. If the Christian really cared about them, they would say stuff like "let me show you the way of of the lord" or something along those lines. I went to a catholic schools so many of my friends are catholic and post about god on facebook every day and whenever an argument arises they use phrases like I stated above, they never whip out the "you're going to hell" card because they're not pricks. When people say you're going to hell, it's meant to be in the negative way. Do not even try to ******* justify it, because that is exactly what it means and trying to make it look other wise is frankly pathetic.

Go ahead FJ, thumb me down because I'm not wrapping my lips around religion's dick. This place is just the antithesis of reddit. Instead of everyone getting butthurt over religion, they get butthurt over atheism. When will you people learn to take a ******* joke?
