i loved time before photoshop and internet boom because then i didn't know all those aliens, nessie, bigfoot, house ghosts etc. were fake. actually, i really thought some of them were real.

Ignorant doesn't necessarily mean stupid, and that's not really what the quote is saying

User avatar #38 to #37 - fishkrieg (04/30/2013) [-]
Ignorance is a lack of knowledge, not a lack of understanding
User avatar #74 to #38 - OsamaBinLadenz (04/30/2013) [-]
Naivete is the better word for this. Ignorance has the root word "Ignore", which means to refuse to acknowledge something, and so Ignorance is more the refusal of knowledge than lack of knowledge, from my understanding.
User avatar #77 to #74 - fishkrieg (04/30/2013) [-]
yeah pretty much that haha but ignorance still does not mean stupidity
User avatar #79 to #77 - OsamaBinLadenz (04/30/2013) [-]
I agree, ignorance is more of a stubborn characteristic, rather than lack of intelligence.

I would trade believing in these ghosts, aliens bigfoot etc to porn any time.
#27 to #21 - ichbinlecher (04/30/2013) [-]
Which clearly isn't photoshoped
#12 to #6 - anon (04/30/2013) [-]
to be fair, there's still a large probability that aliens are real. we just haven't found them yet.
just saying
#31 to #12 - ichbinlecher (04/30/2013) [-]
False, actually. The more we learn about the universe the less likely we consider it that aliens exist. We once though that Earth was just another planet among trillions of others, but we have since learned that we are carefully situated in an area highly conducive to life. Both in relation to the sun and to the arms of the Milky Way. Where once odds were incredibly high, with our new knowledge we consider it markedly less.
#46 to #31 - anon (04/30/2013) [-]
Because there'll be no planets capable of bearing life in the Huge-LQG. Or the Sloan Great Wall. Or any other massive structure.
#47 to #46 - ichbinlecher (04/30/2013) [-]
I didn't say impossible, I said less likely based on a new influx of knowledge. But, as I am a casual in astronomy, I have to ask - how dense are those structures - if they are much more dense than our location, there is no life as we know it there.
#49 to #47 - anon (04/30/2013) [-]
Not sure how dense. You'd probably be able to work it out from the data on wikipedia or something, the HLQG is 293632000/hMpc^3 and 6.1x10^18 solar masses.

But (IMO), we simply don't know enough about massive structures, or the universe in general, to make any definite statements. There's no evidence that life has to exist on our three planes, they could live partially on one in which the HLQG is perfect for life.
#50 to #49 - ichbinlecher (04/30/2013) [-]
Meh, I am okay with this, but no rationalist should be (as I neatly preclude myself from that category). Explaining things as hypotheticals that are unable to be tested is simply pushing the problem along. But I suppose it could be useful for explaining some conspiracy theories. 4th dimensional being in government employ took down the trade centers, for example (we will hire them in 62 years).
#52 to #50 - anon (04/30/2013) [-]
I just take all my theories from science fiction books.

A lot of miracles are still approved after careful scrutiny by the Catholic Church. Of course, feel free to take that with a grain of salt, just an interesting tidbit.

What is your definition of miracle? Miracle doesn't imply supernatural as in, "holy **** , a ghost hand is writing on the wall!" A miracle can be an unbelievable success in spite of incredibly steep odds against the positive occurrence of happening. These can happen by purely natural means as well, like a terminally ill cancer patient surviving despite only 10% chance of living. Of course modern medicine has a hand in the success, but that does not discount the miraculous nature of the triumph.
#114 to #81 - anon (04/30/2013) [-]
Miracle to most people means it's normally impossible for something to happen, there's no logical means to explain it. Someone with a 10% chance of living, living, is not a miracle. They had a 10% chance.
User avatar #123 to #81 - herecomesjohnny (05/01/2013) [-]
the catholic church defined miracles as god going back on the order of the world he created to impose an exception. So pretty much more than just low chances.

Boy you dun messed up showing your inner beliefs. Here on the internet home of the 15-18 year old independent, liberal, atheist slave we only love and tolerate opinions and viewpoints that match up exactly with what our leaders have spoon fed us. Facts statistics pfft they only matter if they agree with us otherwise just chalk em up to "your a idiot you so dumb and brainwashed those numbers are fake sky fairy wont save you now." Even thou miracles happen everyday and by miracle i mean the catholic church goes in studies the event and determines whether or not the event was a miracle. These investigations are often very complex takes years to complete and involve hundreds of scientific and medical experts in their attempts to actually prove it isn't a miracle before they decide it is one. No matter we'll just chalk it up to fake and retarded thall take care of it
