THIS ****** the white tailed spiders, now, for what it lacks in potency of venom they make up for in numbers and irritatingness. They cause a lot of pain and swelling when they bite and sometimes ulcers. BUT THESE ARE AN ARACHNOPHOBIAS WOST NIGHTMARE they hide in your sheets, shoes, toilet lid, curtains, clothes, towels, coats and they are everywhere.

my question is this, in the preview it says all humans left 1,000 years ago, so 1) how can a species evolve to kill something that is non existent to them? and 2) its only been a 1,000 years... how can species evolve that much? i mean hell what evidence of evolution do we have that has happened in the last 1,000 years? i mean that was only 1012- now
User avatar #208 to #190 - vincetacular (04/28/2013) [-]
Well maybe you are seeing it wrong? Let's say they left earth in 17013 and the crash happened in 18013. That would leave 15000 years for animals to "evolve to kill humans". It doesn't say they left about now (or I missed something), just that they left a thousand years ago but that still may be the distant future.

The only strange thing would be that over the same time humans didn't evolve at all (or they all got black maybe lol)
User avatar #191 to #190 - chism ONLINE (04/28/2013) [-]
mind you if im way off on how this **** works im sorry i went to a very conservative school and didn't learn much about evolution.
User avatar #223 to #191 - roninneko (04/28/2013) [-]
Given the fact that the biosphere (plants and animals) seen in the trailer appears to be similar to the one we have now, I'm guessing that there wasn't too much of an environmental change to necessitate accelerated evolution. So, chances are Will Smith is just being edgy.
#202 to #191 - djnyssie (04/28/2013) [-]
Depending on how harsh the enviroment and the species, evolution can happen at an enhanced rate. Certain species have been seen to evolve through 3-4 generations, Granted it wasnt amassive change. but with something that has a generation every 2-3 months, in 1000 years massive amounts of change can happen. On the point that humans weren't around, well, maybe there was a species much like humans, Other than that, you got me

User avatar #161 - makedonski (04/28/2013) [-]
I got into an argument about animal rights with this chick. I tried to end the conversation by saying that in the end, they're just animals. She became furious, saying that I'm "just a human." I corrected her with, "no, I'm just an animal." Then I explained that if some animal was capable of catching and eating me (she's a vegetarian), I would be content with my new-found place in the food chain.

I mean if something evolved ahead of our species. Like birds that can drop bombs or something crazy like that. If we let ourselves become the inferior species, we've failed.
User avatar #169 to #168 - fuzzyballs (04/28/2013) [-]
...you can't actually force evolution and sprout wings you know, and the only reason we are "ahead" is because of intelligence, we make tools and weapons
you don't come over as a very smart person
User avatar #171 to #169 - makedonski (04/28/2013) [-]
I'd gladly testify against your last point. Maybe I'm not articulating my idea properly. Sure, I'd fight back if I were in any sort of danger, but to see a mere animal eventually become the dominant species on our planet would be crazy. I really only brought this up to win the conversation I was having at the time; it didn't go so deep.

Also, I have a thorough understanding of evolution. It takes millions of years and all that. If I could just sprout wings and become homo avianus overnight, I would have already done so.

M Night has made one of my favorite movies of all time, "The Sixth Sense".
He has also made my least favorite movie of all time, "The Last Airbender".

He hasn't made a good movie in a while.

I think After Earth is his absolute final chance.
User avatar #141 to #119 - lolollo (04/28/2013) [-]
Well, given the fact that the only conceivable plot twist was revealed in the title (the planet being earth), I'm thinking M. Night is just going for the hail mary with this one.

Point being that I wouldn't keep my hopes up.
#143 to #141 - Forfunaccount (04/28/2013) [-]
Plot Twist: There's still human life on Earth.
I think it's incredibly obvious, I'd be surprised if this DIDN'T happen.

IMO M Night isn't cut out to be a good survival director. Especially with only two main characters through most of it.
He'd need something more to keep the movie going for at least 90 minutes, hence, an obvious force of more characters.. Maybe a better director/writer wouldn't need more people, but he would. This would make an excellent survival story, and a great chance to represent the meaning of a bond between father and son. However that's not what M Night is going to do. He's going to make it about something less engaging.
M Night is amazing at psychological stories. But he keeps stepping out of his own zone and keeps making these Fantasy/Sci-Fi bs.
Even though I see all these potential faults with "After Earth", I want to see it. I believe "The Sixth Sense" is a masterpiece of film. He could easily play his cards right with this "hail mary". Maybe he'll do something great for another time.
User avatar #145 to #143 - lolollo (04/28/2013) [-]
Agreed. This movie, just the sound of it, would probably be better with a more "actiony" director, even if it's just Micheal Bay, and he just litters it with explosions. I'm definitely going to see it myself just for the idea of it, but here's hoping M. Night doesn't do the stupid thing and try to FORCE some psychological twist at the end. This movie sounds like it's meant to focus on the setting more than a story. The concept sounds really awesome, so I'm hoping he doesn't **** that up.

Assuming you've seen Oblivion, THAT movie has a twist ending more on par with what M. Night is best at, which is why I was surprised when it came up and he WASN'T the one who directed it. For this movie though, I'm thinking no ************* twist ending would do way more good than forcing one in there for the sake of tradition...
User avatar #151 to #145 - Forfunaccount (04/28/2013) [-]
There has to be a reason for twists. Most horror movies today abuse the use of twists that it's basically a tradition, and I'm pretty sick of it. Have you seen "Sinister"? That movie has one of the best intros to any movie I've ever seen. It's memorable, and horrifying. The first act was extremely suspenseful. But it was ruined by the ending. In my opinion of course. I went seeing it knowing that there was going to be some dumb twists and it's going to be related to some ancient folklore. It would have been more surprising if it was just a normal person killing all those people.
That's when it's time to stop with the twists, when it's so expected that a normal ending is surprising.
Some of the best twists are from movies you don't expect them to be in. "The Usual Suspects", "Star Wars", "Oldboy". They are all classic movies because they gave us something to remember with the ending. Plot twists like the common horror movies today are forced and expected, therefore not as memorable.
Since I'm going in "After Earth" with an expectation, I hope to God he doesn't give me a plot twist. After seeing "The Village", the most useless, forced plot twist in existence, I just lost hope.

I distinctly remember an episode of Supernatural like that.
