is it morally sanctioned to become a marauding lunatic when/if it all hits the fan? if so my first target is using the readily abundant supply of landwhales as live bait.
User avatar #273 to #264 - vatra (04/28/2013) [-]
Look at it this way, by that point each person is their own law, I personally will become cold and merciless, willing to shoot anyone, infected or not, if they pose any sort of threat to me, or hinder me or my survival chances.
User avatar #267 to #264 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Well the idea has no long term benefits beside the point.

Basically what ever your own morality will allow you can do. Because lets be honest who will stop you?
User avatar #246 to #142 - vatra (04/28/2013) [-]
Judge this. I'm taking two, tops three people with me, Machete, .22 riffle, other various weapons, the one person I'm sure to take also has similar access. I can live off land, wilderness training and such. we are heading away from civilization, I think the best place to make a semi-permanent residence is 20 miles from a small to medium sized town, somewhere above the town. I won't hesitate to kill any of my people if they get infected, and I expected the same of them. We will avoid all other people infected or not.
User avatar #248 to #246 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
So far so good. May luck be on your side.

You might need to head father out however. The more isolated you are the better.
User avatar #250 to #248 - vatra (04/28/2013) [-]
Yeah, I thought about that, but I'm trying to find a good point where it is far away, but if absolutely necessary the town is still accessible and considering if it is absolutely necessary then chances are you need to be there and back in a day. A 40 mile round trip is doable but by no means easy.
User avatar #251 to #250 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Well. Would you rather be safe or be able to get to town?
User avatar #253 to #251 - vatra (04/28/2013) [-]
Yeah, you're right, if I can walk there and back in a day, then the zombies sure as hell can walk out to me. Better move it back to what would be a two or three day trip.
User avatar #256 to #253 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
I'd use vehicles but park them far outside of camp like miles out outside camp. Very good for escaping quickly and when not in use, remove the spark plugs or something in the engine to keep it from starting.
User avatar #260 to #256 - vatra (04/28/2013) [-]
Yeah, I intend to use my jeep, the issue is I can easily see gasoline becoming inaccessible in less than a month. Most people won't be thinking conservation and will just keep depleting and and taking from the caches.
User avatar #269 to #260 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Indeed. Maybe a vehicle that is powered by a form of energy that is renewable?
User avatar #272 to #269 - vatra (04/28/2013) [-]
Yeah, we very well could have developed those by the time something like this happens, but as it stands i do not possess the necessary mechanical skills to make alterations like that myself.

And I'm not just talking about the horses.

I think cannibalism is one of the few places I'd draw the line, if we eat people just like the zombies, what is there that even separates us?

I know in a zombie situation it would be a bad idea to have to go melee in the first place, but if you did have to what would be the best suited? I have a variety of very cheap, and therefor unfortunately very useless, blades but among those I have a 24 inch Cold Steel Latin machete which is quite sturdy and easy to swing. For longer range purposes I have a pretty sturdy 4 1/2 foot blade that has quite the weight to it (but no edge) which probably wouldn't be useful at all during indoor encounters. Would it be better to go with something like that or a blunt weapon? As for the sharpness of the machete if its worth it, should it be razor sharp or only enough to keep an edge?
User avatar #236 to #229 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Well Melee is you best choice while it isn't very safe it is quiet and will run out of ammo. It is your primary choice in combat at all times while a firearm is only for anti swarm purposes.

Many people in indoor combat prefer to use knives.

And blunt is considered better because of the little maintenance they need. However they are more effective at killing the under due to the way the work needs less force. Also they weigh less.

Its really a matter of preference. I fancy the lead pipe but what is good for me may not be for others.
#242 to #236 - Xyhpon (04/28/2013) [-]
Ahh I see, I have a few combat knives ready if I have to get that close range. I never really understood why blunt weapons would be better than edged, but when maintenance is considered that makes sense. I've always been more of a sword/machete person but I see a lot of arguments against it without any proof.
User avatar #244 to #242 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Sharp edge require a lot of skill as well and cost 5 **** loads more.
#249 to #244 - Xyhpon (04/28/2013) [-]
That's what I've heard, the cost is understandable but if we know were to look in a zombie apocalypse its as free as the time you have. As for skill, I don't quite agree, but then again I've never met someone skilled at swinging a sword in the first place. It seems like most skill in sword play is learning to fight other people who have swords rather than cutting things. Again though, I've never met someone who's really good with a sword to judge the difference.
User avatar #252 to #249 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Well If you hit it wrong you can bend or break the blade. and to be able to strike at the neck is hard and unnatural for many bladed weapons that were not meant to fight like that
#258 to #252 - Xyhpon (04/28/2013) [-]
You have a point there I suppose, and trying to chop half a skull clean off if you hit them in the head would be less than easy.

What would be the best tactics to survive?

e.g. Scavenging, housing, group size/members, society, and that sort of thing
User avatar #219 to #209 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Well first strategy is defining your goal on a long term level, tactic is the short term.

It would take me all night and more than the 1000 characters the comments allow me.

Isolationism is the best strategy in the long term, the base should be defensible but more importantly self sufficient so you are not starving or dehydrated.

My secret to scavenging... Is to raid disputation centers.

Society, is up to the people in your group because doesn't matter what kind of rule you have if they don't respect it.

What else?
User avatar #222 to #219 - zakaizer (04/28/2013) [-]
Uhh, wow, you really know what you're talking about, okay, test your morality, short term tactic:

Scenario: You send a friend whom you trust to raid a distribution centre, only enough to last the day while you figure out things, 2 hours later, he radio's in saying he needs help, when you get there, you find him on something high up, surrounded by hundreds of zombies (presumably the distribution workers), and now you have two choices:

A) While the zombies are distracted by your friend, quickly and quietly gather the supplies and get out of there, or

B) Attempt to save your friend by taking out the possibly hundreds of zombies, risking everyone's lives (Of course, it depends on what weapons you brought)
#226 to #222 - mizigoth (04/28/2013) [-]
This scenario also depends full on what kind of undead we are talking about, Walked dead style retarded push over zombies. I would go make a loud noise about 2 kilometers away and circle back. In the case of a 48 days / left for dead outbreak, EVERYONES BONED **** EVERYTHING SHOOT YOUR FRIEND IN THE FACE AND RUN.
User avatar #228 to #226 - zakaizer (04/28/2013) [-]
28 Days/weeks later style, the best type of zombies, aggressive, but slow
User avatar #238 to #228 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
28 weeks later zombies ran like a bat out of hell.
User avatar #239 to #238 - zakaizer (04/28/2013) [-]
... What am I thinking of then? Dawn of the Dead, maybe?
User avatar #241 to #239 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Old was slow to my knowledge
New was fast ******* who see a all you can eat after dieting for 28 days
#225 to #222 - mizigoth (04/28/2013) [-]
Personally if he did not tell me why he needed the help on the radio "hence makeing me go to the center and discovering it ****** " I would not have had time to think of a solution and thus would leave him to his fate.
User avatar #224 to #222 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Not hundreds working there as they will be abandoned but hey god's saying " **** my life" I can deal with it.
I'll assume this is all without gas cars.

1. Get the supplies first off no point in ruining the trip
2. Then distract the undead to get a majority after us while he slips away.
3. Lead the undead for a good chase then when we lose them return to base.
4. await possible horde for a week or two and lay low.
User avatar #227 to #224 - zakaizer (04/28/2013) [-]
Hmm, fair enough, remind me to not mess with you if we ever meet up, cause you sir, know what's what.
#231 to #227 - mizigoth (04/28/2013) [-]
However it is my personal opinion that I could do more to survive by stealing what others had, terrible as it sounds but I am being a realist here.
User avatar #232 to #231 - zakaizer (04/28/2013) [-]
Well, you're doing what you need to do to survive, I was just curious as to whether you'd place a friend over supplies, I'm not gonna judge you for it
User avatar #237 to #232 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Well depends how useful he is over how useful the supplies are.

If the supplies save more lives and or more important lives I'm going to try to help him but not going to get everyone killed over him.

Its cold but ten dead bodies on the battle field and ten at home isn't going to be good for anyone.

But if he is important I will try to save him.
User avatar #200 to #142 - srhkid (04/28/2013) [-]
Hi, um.. what is the best gun to use? Caliber size.. cheapest and easiest to maintain and what not, thanks!
User avatar #203 to #200 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
I prefer the .22 what it lacks.... Everywhere else it makes up in its logistical value (You will always find tons of these rounds everywhere in the country and city) is quieter than many other rounds, lighter round and gun, and its cheap. plus you can split ammo between the pistol and rifle adding to versatility.

Or the 12 gauge. A bigger more well suited to the combat role is great for clearing out indoor threats. Also good logistical value but its shot can be heard for miles.

Really its a matter of preference.
User avatar #214 to #203 - srhkid (04/28/2013) [-]

Pathogens if you like a viral zombie. We are interested in the idea of an Prion but are looking to all types like parasites.

Along with other types.
#188 to #186 - darrelltwo (04/28/2013) [-]
i heard that there is already a type of mutated rabies sickness that causes people to act like zombies
User avatar #193 to #188 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Rabies is a perfect zombie pathogen due to the nature of its symptoms however its long incubation period, and slow infection rate have left it a minor threat. Rabies however fluctuates in its symptoms of aggressiveness. Dogs infected with rabies that are social and outgoing, grow aggressive and hostile. While shy dogs grow more and more passive.

So yeah. Science.

i guess its just a matter of terminology, as to why i don't understand most of what you're talking about.
User avatar #201 to #198 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
incubation period: is how long till you start to feel it. Think of it like drugs or eggs.

infection rate: how many new people get infected. Something like the flu has an high infection rate.

Fluctuates: a variation in result.
#202 to #201 - darrelltwo (04/28/2013) [-]
i was speaking about "pathogens" i know they're some type of sickness or something, but i don't know exactly.

What happens when the zombies eat all the people do eh go for the animals too? Do they eat each other
User avatar #180 to #176 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Currently we are sticking with the idea that they eat animals as well as humans. What would happen though? They would equally attack animals and humans so they wouldn't wait for humans to die out first.
What would happen is that evolution would favor winged, small fast, and smart animals over larger ones .

Each other? Its an interesting idea but currently, No. And if they eat each other there is nothing to worry about.
#185 to #180 - sagedivinity (04/28/2013) [-]
What's the best way to lead a group or does it depend on who's in it?
User avatar #189 to #185 - undeadwill (04/28/2013) [-]
Sociology states that while the authoritarian who forces them and gives them orders is effective, makes the people dependent on that leader, when that leader disappears the others are lost. And create hostilities among each other.
A democratic leader ship creates a system of people who while work better together with a leader suggesting a direction and they work on their own toward it.

Some **** like that.

Personally democratic on the basis of specialties and expertise works great in the long and short run as it puts people who are best at their job in a position where that expertise works to its full potential.

Really just depends on the group though.
