What about fj thumbs ?
User avatar #6 to #5 - trollchildxy (04/27/2013) [-]
Yeah but regardless the meaning of one of the thumbs meant "I like you, you fought with honor, you may live"
#7 to #5 - sooperpsycho (04/27/2013) [-]
The thumb down meant sheathe your sword, because you are done fighting. The Thumbs up meant "Keep you your sword out because there is more fighting."

And putting the thumb to the neck meant you should execute him
#31 to #7 - xerathon (04/27/2013) [-]
Actually the thumb down was never used, instead they used to put the thumb inside the fist or bend the thumb to represent the sheathing of the sword.
User avatar #30 to #7 - Blargosnarf (04/27/2013) [-]
I thought thumbs up meant kill your opponent and tucking your thumb into your fist meant sheath your weapon, aka give mercy.

I don't get why the majority of FJ seems to hate rage faces now. Those self-made comics with rage faces and those animal memes like courage/insanity wolf were the reason I enjoyed coming to FJ. Now it's just a bunch of pictures people get from other websites.
User avatar #32 to #28 - oishiine (04/27/2013) [-]
Because rage faces have entered the mainstream culture and are overused by people who think memes are "le so original and funny XDDddDDd".

At least that's my guess.
#39 to #32 - anon (04/27/2013) [-]
but the fact that they care at all means they pay as much attention to the mainstream as anybody else. Not thinking something is funny because other people do is about as pathetic as it gets.

I'm pretty certain there was no "thumbs up". Either keep your arms at your sides or point your thumb down to show what you wanted, how could anyone possibly tell the difference between a thumbs up or down from a hundred meters away?
User avatar #24 to #18 - yudodat ONLINE (04/27/2013) [-]
There was a thumbs up actually and Ceaser or whoever was in power at the time would let the crowd show what they wanted and then decide, they could choose to disobey what the crowd says but that would lead to a bad reputation. And it was actually very easy to see his thumb from the arena.

thumbs down meant to lay your sword to the ground, and thumbs up pointed the thumb towards the heart. i hate when people get this mixed

If I remember correctly, most of the time they spared the losers life. They were kept like sports celebrities, and there was no sense in killing a good investment...now if the fight was one sided, and the loser wasn't worth the cost anymore, that's another story.
User avatar #35 to #33 - poutinesalad (04/27/2013) [-]
I'm pretty sure getting stabbed through the chest means you're dead.
User avatar #37 to #33 - akkere (04/27/2013) [-]
I remember being told there was some kind of historical controversy on how the Romans handled the deaths of gladiators, and what the "thumb up/ thumb down" meant, long before films like The Gladiator were out there and this was common knowledge of course.
They supposedly didn't really spare the loser's life very often, but I don't have much of a citable source to confirm.
#47 to #37 - CollinTB (04/27/2013) [-]
The "thumb up/thumb down" historical controversy is because there's no proof that those were the gestures people did, we just know that there was one gesture or another that was done. The thumb thing is pretty much only widely accepted because of the painting OP captioned.

hahahahaha you guys get so anally traumatized when someone points out a massive, gaping hole the size of your assholes in your arguments. I don't care, though, because I'm right and you're wrong and no amount of fanny frustration on your part will change that.
