Can someone explain how Fawkes became the symbol to represent freedom and overthrowing tyranny? Yeah, he tried to bomb what he perceived to be an oppressive Parliament, but keep in mind that he was trying to install a proto-Fascist theocratic police state. There's a reason he's burned in effigy every year, dude was a total dick.

Pic related.

Not sure if it's what you were looking for, but it explains quite a bit.

He's obviously implying El Che is cut from the same cloth.

No, just that he was adopted as the symbol of those he was fighting against.

Guy Fawkes was a well known criminal in Europe, a lot of people (crooks) admired him. When he was finally caught and sentenced to execution he wore what is now known as the "Anonymous Mask" when he was hung to hide his identity so other crooks would continue admiring him. That's what I always heard at least.

People like V (the protagonist from the movie), not guy fawkes. Guy fawkes is merely V's inspiration to achieve great things, much like V is our own

guy fawkes isn't the symbol, it's the comic book character V who is, he also happens to be wearing a fawkes mask

V takes time to reference "the gunpowder treason and plot" which Fawkes was involved, more or less saying he is using Guy Fawkes as a symbol of his own rebellion... or I'm just spouting crazy talk again. But that ones is less likely. Much less.
