I actually had to look this up, but chain mail is indeed designed to protect against slashing and piercing edged weapons. Depending on the way the chains are links, however, a piercing weapon like a katar or spear could get through if well-placed. It's bludgeoning weapons like a mace, flail, or hammer that chain mail sucks against.
