"Gyarados is a large dragon Pokémon, resembling dragons seen in Chinese mythology." ~Bulbapedia.

also pic is it's breeding egg group thingy.
#25 to #14 - RageGuyyourmom (04/25/2013) [-]
I understand the lore behind Gyarados, mezzjuc was saying charizard was a dragon because Lance uses him, but Lance also uses Gyarados which isn't a dragon either, mainly because of the limited choice of dragons in the first generation (the dragonite line)
User avatar #26 to #25 - mrcowll ONLINE (04/25/2013) [-]
Gyrados isn't a dragon since the only dragon move in Gen I was Dragon Rage which only does 40 damage, so Gyrados wouldn't have a weakness and is already strong as **** .
#27 to #26 - RageGuyyourmom (04/25/2013) [-]
No, he wasn't a dragon because of a Japanese myth about a carp fighting an amazingly strong current and flying.
User avatar #30 to #6 - ohgodwaitimatheist (04/25/2013) [-]
You would have much more success pointing out Aerodactyl.

Anyway, Lance is the Dragon Master, you know...
#202 to #30 - RageGuyyourmom (04/25/2013) [-]
Thanks, I don't understand the hate, he isn't a dragon type Lance was a Dragon master but there was only one choice of a dragon type pokemon line in RBY so there were dragon looking pokemon filling in the slots.
#68 to #3 - marrik (04/25/2013) [-]
Lance uses flying types; Dragonite(dragon/flying) x3, Charizard(fire/flying), Gyarados(water/flying), Aerodactyl(rock/flying).
User avatar #111 to #3 - JimmyJongo (04/25/2013) [-]
Flint uses a steelix
Steelix is not fire type
#39 to #3 - shwoodle (04/25/2013) [-]
He also uses Gyarados and Aerodactyl along with Charizard and 3 Dragonite.
That's because he is a flying-type master.
User avatar #49 to #39 - stefanovic (04/25/2013) [-]
He is in fact a dragon-trainer, but I agree, his pokémon suggest he's more of a flying-type master
User avatar #78 to #49 - darkdragonswrath (04/25/2013) [-]
His gen 5 team is all dragons now. There were only 3 dragons in gen one and that was the draganite family.
User avatar #79 to #78 - stefanovic (04/25/2013) [-]
yeahh, I'd like to correct my previous statement: his pokémon sugges he's more of a badass-type master
User avatar #80 to #79 - darkdragonswrath (04/25/2013) [-]
Ah, can't argue with that.

Check your facts: Lance is a master Dragon-type trainer.

User avatar #62 to #44 - vigorion ONLINE (04/25/2013) [-]
You may have a point, Midirr - but we don't care how pokémon's nutty Gym classifications work. If you are a gym leader whose pokémon all share the flying type and you have more flying types than dragon types, you're a flying-type master in our book.
User avatar #64 to #62 - Midirr (04/25/2013) [-]
Well technically he's not a gym-leader, but I'm not going to focus on that.
You made me laugh, and point taken my good sir.
A well-deserved thumb for you.
User avatar #50 to #44 - shwoodle (04/25/2013) [-]
Good for calling me out. Yes Lance is a dragon master but I always found it funny that his team in GSC had more flying-types (because in Gen 2 there was only four dragons total). Of course that changes in rematches in hg/ss and later games he is in.
User avatar #63 to #50 - Midirr (04/25/2013) [-]
It didn't meant it in a dick way btw, I just thought I would help you see your mistake.
Tbh, when I was little I never really thought about it that there weren't many dragon types, I just figured he used any type of pokemon who is/resembles a dragon.
But it is indeed uncanny that all his pokemon just happen to also be flying-types.

Gyarados is a water/flying-type so he would fit in, in that theory.
bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Gyarados
However that guy was wrong anyway since Lance is a master Dragon-type trainer and not a flying-type trainer.

"Gyarados (Japanese: ギャラドス Gyarados) is a dual-type Water/Flying Pokémon. "

But...that doesn't make any sense
User avatar #47 to #43 - shwoodle (04/25/2013) [-]
I think it has to do with the myth Gyarados is based on, the one with the carp swimming up a waterfall and becomes a dragon.
As for why it's typed water/flying probably for game balance.
#52 to #47 - anon (04/25/2013) [-]
It doesn't have anything to do with type, it's about breeding. They're all classified as dragons or part of the dragon family if you look it up. It's somewhat ****** up though, not just this dragonthing
User avatar #89 to #3 - fukkendragonite (04/25/2013) [-]
Because he's melting your ice-types, which you have in your team to combat dragons.

Same with the gyarados that knows ice fang and dragon pulse, to take out the dragon-types in your team.

Although stats wise, Dragonite would kill Charizard.

HOWEVER, IN TERMS OF SHEER AWESOMENESS, CHARIZARD SHALT TEAR DRAGONITE'S ANUS A NEW HOLE AND **** IT.
User avatar #151 to #138 - markertemp (04/25/2013) [-]
The stat difference isn't that much actually. Charizard's base stat total is 534, which is pretty good. Dragonite, however, is one of the pseudo-legends, also called "600 beasts," being one of the few non-legendaries that has a base stat total of 600.

Going back to Charizard, it excels in speed by a good 20 points, so it's likely to hit first. Type wise, neither Pokemon's types are super effective against the other's, but Fire doesn't do much to Dragon. Charizard can also learn Dragon Claw, and Dragonite can learn a number of Water type moves. All in all, when it comes down to an actual battle, the two are very close to equal.

User avatar #13 to #12 - ThatsSoFunnyHeHe (04/25/2013) [-]
Yea, but the joke itself isn't very common on FJ.
Charizard has a 4x weakness to rock, so whenever he's mentioned and looked highly upon people like to insult it by mentioning stealth rocks, which is used a ton in competitive battling.
#19 to #13 - anon (04/25/2013) [-]
i'm probably going to be thumbed so hard for this so that satan would be jealous but:
i don't know what is so special about stealth rock, isn't "spikes" the same thing?
User avatar #24 to #19 - sickearth (04/25/2013) [-]
stealth rocks hits every pokemon without certain abilities while spikes can only hit grounded pokemon.
#21 to #19 - anon (04/25/2013) [-]
Nope.
Spikes takes three turns to fully set up. In other words, you need to use the move Spikes three times in order to gain its full effect. Also, it is set damage, every Pokémon take 25% damage if its fully set up, with lower numbers, of course representing fewer turns.

Stealth Rock takes one turn to set up and is treated as if a Rock-type move is used against your Pokémon. Since Charizard is 4x weak to Rock, as it is a Fire and Flying type, upon entry into Stealth Rock, it loses 50% of its health, making it impossible to take a hit and impossible to switch out and back in.
