Greetings, FunnyJunkers. I want to check out this Doctor Who series to see what's so awesome about it. Any recommendations where should I start? Right from the first season?
User avatar #41 to #40 - whiplasher ONLINE (04/23/2013) [-]
There are two series. The old one (which started in the 60s) and the new one, started in 2005. Watch the last one. It's amazing.

I personally think that you should start from the first season and head on.

But, if you really want to get and see something cool, look for anything with Weeping Angels. A quick google search can tell you the episodes with all the angels. i'm too lazy to do it.

I´d recommend to start with the 9th Doctor and watch up to the 11th. Those are the "modern" series. After that, if you want more, you can try out the old ones. I personally loved them, but seeing that some of them are stil black/white, etc, many people won´t enjoy them as much, - that´s why starting with 9 is the best way, otherwise, you´d probably miss out somethng you like, just because you don´t ike the ancient quality

If you're just starting, there are 3 options. You can start at the very beginning, 1963, but that can be very difficult and we are talking a MASSIVE amount of episodes. You can start with Tom Baker (4th doctor) which skips a lot of the early black and white and weirdness. Or you can just start at the new series with the 9th doctor, because they made it well enough that you don't really NEED all the context from the earlier doctor who series', although it can be nice to have.

User avatar #117 to #50 - yetaxaa (04/23/2013) [-]
That's true but not entirely
It wasn't an accident, they deliberately destroyed hundreds of episodes (not just Doctor Who)
And it affected the first 9 seasons or so although copies were kept or have been found of everything from season 7 onwards as well as most of seasons 1, 2 and 6
Although only chunks of 3, 4 and 5 survive

Funnily you specify season 2 as that's the most survivign of the 60s with only 2 episodes missing.

From what I had heard, it was season two. Didnt know about it being on purpose
User avatar #129 to #127 - yetaxaa (04/23/2013) [-]
oh yeah it was standard practice at the BBC in the 60s and 70s because tape was expensive and could be reused
and then they started running out of room for the film copies and threw those away too...
It's amazing that all the audio survives (due to fans recording off the TV) and a ton of pictures (thanks to someone hired by the BBC to take 60 - 70 pictures of an episode of a show as a record for directors and stuff)

It's not that hard to comprehend. Just remember that time isn't a continuous progression of cause and effect. It's just a ball wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.
The doctor can visit all sorts of times and places, without regard to other things that have happened. Sometimes he's ends up in a spot that was directly influenced by his previous actions, and other times the universe didn't change because of it. It's really just a big cop-out by the writers to never have to worry about canonical progression.

It's not really like that, as he's not normally able to encounter himself. And it's nothing so subtle as what you explained, in fact there are many instances that he goes through and tries his damnedest not to change things, while other times he changes everything in that continuity.
It's hard to explain, but it's kinda like.... Everything that can happen, would not have happened, did happen, hasn't happened, will happened, can't happen, won't happen, should happen, would have happened, and isn't happening, is currently happening.
#143 to #139 - Jerpent (04/23/2013) [-]
You guys really need to read the book Pathfinder By Orson Scott Card. He makes the idea of changing the past of a time stream and the time stream still progressing with the change an easy concept to comprehend

It's an easy concept to understand. Just don't overthink it. A paradox only exists in your head.

No.
But you're better off starting with the 9th, because earlier seasons are pretty dated and that one helps explain everything you need to know about the doctor on the spot.
Also, it's a big ass connection throughout this guy and the end of the 10th.
User avatar #102 to #90 - handsomelegend ONLINE (04/23/2013) [-]
Okay thanks for the help man. Is it on the 12th Doctor still? Or has it moved to 13th?
User avatar #123 to #102 - temporalguardian (04/23/2013) [-]
If what they say stay's once the 13th dies that'll be the end of the show. I really hope they find a loophole but a long time ago in the older series it was said that a time lord can regenerate only 13 times. Which technically means that then there'll be a 14th doctor since thats his 13th regeneration but still.
User avatar #128 to #123 - yetaxaa (04/23/2013) [-]
actaully it's 12 regenerations so there can be 13 Doctors.
although for all we know there could have been another incarnation between McGann and Eccleston
