I'm tired of this ****** ass argument that marijuana users try to use. They would be correct if all they said was that marijuana can't kill people, but that's not their argument. Their argument is that SMOKING marijuana can't kill you, and that's where their argument falls apart.
Completely ignoring any chemicals that are involved with smoking marijuana, the human body is not evolutionarily equipped to deal with taking in superheated smoke on a regular basis. Regular inhalation of heated smoke can and will damage the lining of the lungs. Such damage could entirely possibly eventually lead to severe respiratory problems, and yes, even marijuana induced premature death.
I have completely left out any and all opinions I have about the chemicals involved with marijuana, because they're just that, opinions.

It's unclear whether or not the constant intake of THC itself has a long-term negative effect on brain function, but it's certainly a lot safer to use edibles than to smoke. At least in that scenario, you're only taking in the THC, instead of all the smoke and ash from a joint.

still, I think both options are stupid.
#404 to #184 - Rascal (04/21/2013) [-]
honestly the reason i will never use marijuana is because smoking is nasty
#476 to #184 - Rascal (04/21/2013) [-]
Long time pot smoker and I find nothing wrong with this, with the wide variety of paraphernalia Its not hard to cool the smoke, what most stoners really have to look out for in the long run is thee blunts and the joints, knock that **** off, it will kill you quick (Probably wont make it to 70) and painfully.
#219 to #184 - tomthehippie (04/21/2013) [-]
Unfortunately there have been zero deaths that were proven to be caused by regular use of pot. In fact the only negative side effects of pot that have been PROVEN are as follows;

1 short term memory loss, due to how THC effects the chemistry of the brain short term memories are processed differently than normal, making it far more likely for the user to forget them. How ever, this is a temporary effect, within six months of quitting users are back to normal.

2 lung capacity, because tar does build up in the lungs, the lung capacity goes down, how ever this is still short term, quit smoking and within six months your lung capacity will return to normal. The myth of "one joint equals 20 cigs" is just that, a myth. In fact, due to more frequent smoking, cigaret smokers normally have less lung capacity than pot smokers, even though pot does produce more tar.

There are no cases of lung cancer or ANY kind of cancer that have been traced back to pot, no case of ODs, no cases of ANY terminal condition have been traced back to pot.

Thank you, good night.

Thats when people argue that if it were legal they wouldn't smoke it regular, just how you're not surposed to drink regularly. Its kinda dumb in a way because the whole reason marijuana become illegal is because of some guy who made paper and decided his work was indanger because people were talking about finding a way to turn Marijuana into paper and it would turn out to be cheaper. It never anything to do with anyones safety it was all to do with money.
#212 to #184 - Rascal (04/21/2013) [-]

Smoke of any kind produces carcinogens. All that resin buildup in your pipe/bong is also what's building up in the lungs as tar. Cancer is a big risk to anyone who smokes anything over time.

Vaporizers, however, do not burn the plant material itself, only the THC, which burns at a much lower temperature. It then collects in a bag, giving it plenty of time to cool before being inhaled. It is indeed a much safer alternative, but safer still are "edibles".

Because alcohol had a much larger cultural influence and support. They tried to make alcohol illegal, and they failed miserably.

The reason they legalized alcohol was the fact that they:
1. weren't getting taxes from it

I only smoke every other week, when the mood strikes me, or if I have a few friends over (I'm more of a social smoker, I've always hated being high with no one to share the feeling with)
My room mate, however, smokes weed like a fish breathes water.... and no, I don't like him or his opinions very much, he always get's way too intrusive, and can be a dick about it sometimes (only reason why he's still my room mate is because it's not my choice whether or not he lives here) then my other room mate, does the same thing.... but he has a three month old child now... and all he does is smoke weed, get drunk, and lounge around (again, not my choice whether or not he lives here)

so yeah, while I agree with you, it only affects the heavy users in that way, occasional users are only useless while they're high

Tobacco can cause cancer. Although this may take a extremely long time, it is fatal, and because of the addictive nature, it is hard to stop. You would need to smoke 1500 pounds of marijuana in 15 minutes to OD. and you would pass out before then. so it is true. Marijuana cant kill you unless you have super speed, and cig's are famously known for cancer and other lung disease.
User avatar #517 to #492 - thirdjess (04/22/2013) [-]
Like I said, show me proof that Tobacco causes cancer. Also, you're comparing apples and oranges there. "Tobacco causes cancer over a long period of time and you can't smoke a whole lot of weed at once." You see what I'm saying here?

Smoke causes cancer, for sure. Dip causes cancer because of the chemicals created during the fermentation process- much like an excess of alcohol can cause liver cancer. Generally speaking, an excess of anything fermented has some sort of negative side effects. However, smoking tobacco is dried. It is dried herb. Pesticides and fertilisers aside- it is harmless, just like weed.

Well, until a scientist decides to research this all the way instead of fleshlights, we will never know properly. To,each his own.
User avatar #453 - konradkurze (04/21/2013) [-]
or, as numbnuts in a science lab tried:

get a monkey to inhale nothing but marijuana smoke till it died from lack of oxygen, then claim inhaling weed smoke killed it
#458 to #453 - alilmetalkid (04/21/2013) [-]
assuming your talking about the same test i saw, they didn't actually kill the monkeys, they just gave them brain damage, told the public 'marijuana kills brain cells' and left out the part where monkeys were inhaling gas with THC for 3 minutes every, depriving them of oxygen.

TL;DR: Marijuana should be legal but sold with a warning label stating "not a substitute for oxygen"

I don't have issues with the drug, I have had my experience with it. What I find annoying is the people who smoke it and won't shut up about it. We all have our hobbies but we don't have to rub it in every ones face. Smoke the **** and shut up, no one cares.
User avatar #266 - hedgehogbob (04/21/2013) [-]
No but it can make you extremely stupid, like in the documentary "Super High Me"

I used to think the idea of a gateway drug was ******** , but then I thought about it and the idea of someone that has never done drugs before finding hard drugs or going to find hard drugs was unlikely.
User avatar #379 to #73 - enorus (04/21/2013) [-]
As has been said a thousand times before the gateway theory can be applied to anything. Marijuana, alcohol, nicotine, milk, water, oxygen. Just because someone breeds air and then starts doing drugs doesn't mean oxygen is in any way the cause. Just because someone does one drug and then another doesn't in any way mean that the first drug "created" the need for another.
User avatar #495 to #379 - enorus (04/21/2013) [-]
Nice counter arguments you ******* faggots.
#233 to #73 - Rascal (04/21/2013) [-]
please see the comment below you for enlightenment. the "gateway" theory is dead. all that's left now is for mythbusters to prove it to the masses.
#144 to #73 - Rascal (04/21/2013) [-]
What you're saying is that people who smoke pot are more likely to do harder drugs, because they know dealers, right? But that doesn't really make it a gateway drug. That just means you are put in a situation where its more readily available. Like a guy who smokes pot is going to ask his dealer if he can get a hold of something harder. That means living in the ghetto is like a gateway drug, cause Tyreese next door cooks crack and I can just go ask him.

Smoke is smoke. If it gets in your lungs, you can develop cancer. Cigarettes have a **** load of poisons and **** that's unhealthy as a ************ , which is why lung cancer develops fast. Weed, although harmless, can still give you lung cancer. Not as quick as cigarettes. But don't be surprised when after many years of marijuana smoking, that your dumb ass develops lung cancer.
User avatar #389 to #384 - supamonkey (04/21/2013) [-]
But the people who smoke cigarettes usually smoke 20 a day or more... no one can afford to smoke that much weed a day.
User avatar #411 to #389 - TheCerealKiller (04/21/2013) [-]
Not to mention that if you did, your mouth would be dryer than the ******* Sahara.
Plus, weed has chemicals in that basically paradox it's intoxicating chemicals.

Whats with all the hate against stoners? In my experience they are almost always friendly, nice people. Also, lets get the facts straight. Marijuana, while having potential for respiratory problems purely because it is burnt plant matter, has never been linked to COPD without cigarettes being a factor as well. There has never been a single health related death attributed to smoking marijuana, and in many studies it has been shown to prevent Alzheimer's, and while weakening short term memory marijuana has been correlated as to increasing long term memory. Obviously it's not safe to drive on, but it's not safe to drive and eat chinese food either- we just need to keep them separate!

TL:DR- Pot's not perfect, but it's not terrible. Whats with the hate?
User avatar #413 to #330 - TheCerealKiller (04/21/2013) [-]
Because it's so much easier to hate than show any other emotion, apparently. Maybe showing compassion, takes effort? I dunno. I'm lost as well.
User avatar #439 to #330 - kingdarkbeat (04/21/2013) [-]
"... has been correlated as to increasing long term memory."
Quite the contrary:

"Persistent cannabis use was associated with neuropsychological decline broadly across domains of functioning, even after controlling for years of education. Informants also reported noticing more cognitive problems for persistent cannabis users. Impairment was concentrated among adolescent-onset cannabis users, with more persistent use associated with greater decline. Further, cessation of cannabis use did not fully restore neuropsychological functioning among adolescent-onset cannabis users."
#482 to #439 - Rascal (04/21/2013) [-]
Any stoner will tell you its got a bad effect on the memory, but there are actually cannabinoids that try to negate the effect, as an herbal medicine I find it to be fantastic. I've got a hell of a eating issue and I can tell you for sure that if I wasnt smoking weed I'd still weigh around 80 pounds. In my experience math class and weed do not mix, it is too hard to concentrate on the math problem and solve it the whole way through, but most stoners find not problem waiting till the end of the day to light it up.

so getting high while you are a teenager is bad for you?
just like getting drunk and smoking tobbaco?
i just want to know how did they test all of that
User avatar #480 to #448 - kingdarkbeat (04/21/2013) [-]
Everything is explained in the study. Read it and you will see that those who never smoke weed perform better on the tests over time, while those who do, get progressively worse the older they get. There's also a correlation between the amount they smoke and the test results.

Although it's not specifically stated, I think it's safe to assume that these are ordinary people who drink alcohol socially, and some of them probably smoke tobacco too. Add weed to the equation and they get dumber, both short-term and long-term.
#488 to #480 - tombatbass (04/21/2013) [-]
I don't really think it's safe to assume anything, especially since the test never states that the subjects are getting dumber, merely worse at their specific tasks. It has been shown to make people worse at some things, but never advanced cognition- just look at Carl Sagan.
#486 to #480 - penguinthegreat (04/21/2013) [-]
it seems they didnt test how does quitting affect the IQ, and im pretty sure there is a real diffrence between someone who is currently smoking, and a person that stopped over 6 months ago
#485 to #480 - penguinthegreat (04/21/2013) [-]
attention problems and memory problems do exist, but they go away after being clean for a month or so (personal expirience)
i would like to know how does it affect people with higher IQ
i had 3 IQ tests and had 126,124,128 scored in that order
between the last two i was smoking weed for two years about 2 grams a month, and stopped a month before the last test
#484 to #480 - penguinthegreat (04/21/2013) [-]
so i started reading the study
IQ tests aren't 100% precise and a diffrence of under 0.5% doesnt seem significant enough for me to take seriously
ill continue reading
