So... I see you received the free ticket I sent you. I'm glad. I did so want you to be here. You see it doesn't matter if you catch me and send me back to the asylum... Gordon's been driven mad. I've proved my point. I've demonstrated there's no difference between me and everyone else! All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. You had a bad day once, am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed. Why else would you dress up as a flying rat? You had a bad day, and it drove you as crazy as everybody else... Only you won't admit it! You have to keep pretending that life makes sense, that there's some point to all this struggling! God you make me want to puke. I mean, what is it with you? What made you what you are? Girlfriend killed by the mob, maybe? Brother carved up by some mugger? Something like that, I bet. Something like that... Something like that happened to me, you know. I... I'm not exactly sure what it was. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! Ha ha ha! But my point is... My point is, I went crazy. When I saw what a black, awful joke the world was, I went crazy as a coot! I admit it! Why can't you? I mean, you're not unintelligent! You must see the reality of the situation. Do you know how many times we've come close to world war three over a flock of geese on a computer screen? Do you know what triggered the last world war? An argument over how many telegraph poles Germany owed its war debt creditors! Telegraph poles! Ha ha ha ha HA! It's all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for... it's all a monstrous, demented gag! So why can't you see the funny side? Why aren't you laughing?

It's actually a massive speculation that the Joker is not only more intelligent than the Batman, but also more skilled and generally superior; and that the only reason Batman wins in every 'game' they have is because the Joker lets him win.

Now, whether this is true or not doesn't matter to me, although it would make a lot of sense. The Joker repeatedly takes down almost every member of the Justice League with near perfect efficiency, failing only when Batman comes into the mix. In fights, the Joker has always been able to handle himself with either his own martial arts skills (which, by those who observed his fighting in detail, say it seems to be a mix of Boxing and Mauy Thai), gadgets, or underhanded tactics; but when he faces against Batman he seems to deliberately go slower and hit weaker. In nearly every situation where he gains the upper-hand (whether with Batman or otherwise) he either deliberately gives it up or gives them a way to get by it, UNLESS it's just a domino effect (as in, it's just a build-up to something greater) in which case even Superman has failed on some occasions to stop him.

It just seems that his entire mission, aside from simply having fun, is to get Batman (and ONLY Batman, as he has gone out of his way to avoid death when faced with it in any other occasion) to kill him. And to be honest, it's actually quite sad; it's as if he validates his entire existence by trying to break an 'unbreakable' superhero, and I for one can't help but wonder what exactly he's trying to prove
User avatar #43 to #3 - angelious ONLINE (04/19/2013) [-]
actually the reason why joker seems to go from "psychotic clown prince of crime" to a pathetic crook is because he redefines his personality each and every day.and while he does know how to fight he is nowhere near batmans level(in most incarnations)

and yes he does enjoy fighting agaitns bats.and in the earth 2(if im correct) continuity he went even more nuts when he heared batman had died of old age and only stopped when the new batman managed to convince him that he is actually the old bats.

also even though joker takes down jl members with ease its usually in elsewhere comics(non canon) or just extremely big plot shielding.

Madness and cruelty is beyond no man. With the right instigation, anyone can kill.

User avatar #92 to #3 - tehcashew (04/19/2013) [-]
There have also been theories that Joker is not INsane but rather SUPERsane (inb4 super saiyan puns) and is actually so sane that we can't comprehend it and perceive it as insanity.

"[...] even Superman has failed on some occasions to stop him."

Are you reffering to this? (Injustice: Gods among us)
User avatar #125 to #106 - sorrowofdaedalus (04/19/2013) [-]
You should consider that that is the brand new Injustice comic. That literally JUST came out recently, and it's the -first- time Superman has really managed to do ANYTHING effective against the Joker, and heres the kicker......

....The Joker Still Wins! He kills Lois Lane and drives Superman in to becoming a hitlerious Dictator! He STILL manages to break down an unbreakable hero and turn him in to a mad, raving, LUNATIC!
User avatar #123 to #106 - captainfuckitall (04/19/2013) [-]
I have no idea, all I remember is that Superman gets awfully frustrated with the Joker because he can't stop his new schemes (and even considers killing him many times) and the Joker just laughs it off like it's nothing
#29 to #3 - classybot ONLINE (04/19/2013) [-]
The thing is, he is trying to break him in order to prove to everyone that even the most uncanny hero that has the strongest will for justice can be broken.
It's a fact the Joker points out in many comics, movies and shows that he is trying to break Batman as an example.
He is trying to cause despair so that people lose faith in heroes and cause everyone to be against them.
A bit like the episode in Justice League where the Justice Tower goes full orbital

That last part was actually the Joker's entire plan in The Dark Knight film. What he's trying to prove is that everyone can be corrupted, even the heroes.
#4 to #3 - fizkdk (04/19/2013) [-]
And for those who haven't read the comics, but have seen the recent movies can refer to the scene where Batman is driving his motorcycle towards the Joker. The Joker shoots at him at says something like "Come on... Do it, I want you to do it" (referring to Batman running him over). Batmans turns the wheel in the very last second, not killing the Joker.
User avatar #5 to #3 - sorrowofdaedalus (04/19/2013) [-]
A few things I'd like to tack on.

First off, officially The Joker practices what is known as Irish Boxing, which involves using verbal deception (COME ON BATSY, WHATS THE MATTER? WORRIED ABOUT BOY-BLUNDER AND THE BOMB OVER THERE?) and traditional gallic bare-knuckle boxing styles in order to disorient and diffuse.

Secondly, what the Joker would be trying to "prove" is that nothing is definite. That's what it really all boils down to. Batman is something that is resolute, and concrete. Unchanging and constant testament to Order.

The Joker is the exact opposite, always changing his strategies, always trying to devise a new way of thinking, never feeling or thinking or doing the same thing more than twice in one sitting. He's representative of all that is chaos and corruption, and it is his duty as an Agent of Chaos to prove that Batman is subject to corruption, and change, it's about proving that Batman really is just as weak and flawed as the rest of us, that he can be broken and forced in to realms beyond what he's ever sworn he'd enter.

This essentially the entire premise of Batman: The Killing Joke. The Joker wants to make Batman (and Gordon as well) so enraged or broken that they actually kill the Joker. If he can taint Batman, the Joker wins, even at the cost of his own life. That is why the battles will always continue. Batman will never give the Joker the satisfaction of winning and cannot deviate from his moral code of justice. The Joker, in turn, can't actually kill the Batman because that would mean the game is over. This is much more pronounced in the comics than the animated series, mind you. The Batman is more than a man, he is a symbol. The Joker wants to destroy the symbol, not only the man behind it.
#96 to #82 - sephrax (04/19/2013) [-]
Joker also claims he doesn't hate Batman because he's crazy, but he's crazy because he hates Batman.

I'm sure there is some deeper meaning in that statement, but I'm still trying to figure it out.

It's true Batsy. I know everything, and kinda like the boy who opens his Christmas presents early, I must admit, it's sadly anti-climatic. Behind all the stern and the batarangs, you're just a little boy in a playsuit crying for mommy and daddy. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic...... Oh what the heck, I'll laugh anyway. HA!
