Why do peoplenfind it so awkward to do presentations?
#41 to #2 - anon (04/19/2013) [-]
Becasue you stand in front of people and get judged and a particular judge (the instructor/teacher) will actually rate how well you did. No one likes being judged.

Honestly as long as I'm not the only one presenting i don't get as nervous. I just keep in mind that if i don't do anything that stands out they won't remember because i don't remember jack **** about anyone else's presentations but i remember most of the ones i have done also the fact that a lot of people don't care and don't pay attention settles my nerves very very much.

It triggers the "fight or flight" response. Being put in front of a judgmental crowd triggers an innate instinct, similarly to how a lion jumping out of the brush would have forced our ancient ancestors to make a rapid decision. Seeing all of those eyes staring back at you is akin to facing down a wild predator (yet much less life threatening). Your body gets ready to run the **** out of there if things get overwhelming, by rapidly increasing your heart rate and turning up the adrenaline.
Trying to stay calm and appear collected is like suppressing thousands of years of evolution, which leads to an awkward feeling of discomfort.

Stage Fright?
User avatar #4 to #3 - watermelonkittie ONLINE (04/18/2013) [-]
That doesn't really answer my question. That's just saying people find it awkward, but it doesn't explain why
User avatar #5 to #4 - walcorn (04/18/2013) [-]
That's like asking why are people afraid of the dark?
User avatar #6 to #5 - watermelonkittie ONLINE (04/18/2013) [-]
And I'm still waiting for an answer

Introversion. They get overstimulated by the amount of attention they are receiving and freeze up.
User avatar #13 to #8 - theawesomeyoghurt (04/18/2013) [-]
I find it awkward because I'm afraid of what people will say about me if I **** up or say something wrong, although that's pretty much the case with any kind of social interaction I have. It's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy really because you think about screwing up so much that you stumble over your words and **** .
User avatar #35 to #13 - burningsmurfs (04/19/2013) [-]
One thing I found that helped me was instead of focusing on the nervousness of doing it focus on the irritation that I have to get up there and do it. Feeling annoyed is much nicer than feeling horribly anxious about it believe me.
User avatar #65 to #5 - rifee (04/19/2013) [-]
But...we know why people are afraid of the dark.
It used to be an adventageous evolutionary trait. the more cautious you were about predators in the dark, the higher the chances of survival was:)

some are to a greater degree than others, while some aren't at all

I remember reading a study which compared the western attitude to speaking in front of large groups to the attitude in for example Turkey and Lebanon. The result strongly suggested that our awkwardness and nervousness in presentations is linked to how we tend to make it a big deal in school ("We have presentations coming up, make sure you are WELL-PREPARED." etc) from very early on and throughout our teens. It becomes associated on an emotional level to something huge and difficult and that mindset tends to stick with us.

Compare this to how in many Middle-Eastern and African countries, presentations are something casual which fairly often happens spontaneously without preparation. It makes the children a lot more relaxed with the idea and proceeds to make it easier for them to speak in front of people as adults.

It's an unfortunate misconception that ideas and designs from impoverished countries are inferior by default to those of our western standard.

That sounds a little too good to be true. Is there a link or source?
User avatar #61 to #44 - hudis ONLINE (04/19/2013) [-]
I'm not finding the article right now, I may have to dig deeper - however, I will say that I have had it confirmed before by several friends and acquaintances from the Middle East, Western Asia (Azerbaijan specifically) and parts of Africa. Turkey was wrong, apologies for that.

Either way, I'll keep this thread in mind and post again if I find it.

mate the whole point of zyzz was to make him more ¨cool¨.. It was like an alternate persona that he didnt really ¨care¨ about. If people didnt like zyzz, it was just a proforma, it wasnt the real him. And thats what he encouraged people to do, dont give a fk what people think. Idk if u are that type or if have noticed, but alot of people tend to go through embarrising **** in their life, and it was just a way for HIM and kind of a show for the rest of us that we shouldnt take life so seriously... Thats just what i got from it, i only saw the rest in peace vid and something else about him cant really remember...

Zyzz's face when:

btw zyzz is my inspiration and everyone literally just calls me "zyzzbrah"....
so ******* annoying
User avatar #32 - morskoj (04/19/2013) [-]
I used to have a ****** time with presentations. I would shake and stutter and not talk loud enough or talk too fast. And I'd get pins and needles feeling.

But then I realized it was ****** for everyone else to have to deal with that, because we have to take notes on other's presentations sometimes. So I decided to set the bar, and talk confidently. Doesn't hurt a bit to do that!
