Nothing is worse than a regret fill coffin. We can try to prolong the inevitable, but even superman has to die, someday. All we can really do is enjoy our time and make the most of it, while we still have it. Don't fear death because it can be right around the corner.

If you die, you will wake up the moment you die. You will be surrounded by trees and mountains, rivers and fields, at the front of an impenetrable fortress. The man will greet you and show you inside, where there will be first two fountains with beautiful round women frolicking in its root beer showers. Next you will be shown to a hall filled with food so delicious you can't stop eating until you're stuffed, followed by glorious battle in which you never die and always emerge victorious.

After battle you will be greeted by Odin with a warm hug, and as you smell his stench, the stench worn by all warriors, you realize you are home young warrior, for you are a prince of Valhalla, and as long as the sun shines on your kingdom you will remain there with your fellow norsemen.

Each of us only get to die once.

Forget what happens after. Whatever it is, it's inevitable and unavoidable. Think about what you can control-how you want to end. With a bang, or a whimper?

The odds of dying on the battlefield are very low. We haven't had a truly bloody conflict since Vietnam. But even if you die fighting, isn't that one of the best ways to go?

As a combat engineer myself,i had to deal with that feel aswell, but it's also nice to know you save people when you have to dig up IED's and mines, or find a tripwire.

It may sound weird but beeing a soldier makes me feel more alive than anything else i ever did, since i'm more afraid of an unlived life, than dying living the best i can...

BTW good luck in the army,

as someone who has nearly died and had to confront their own mortality my advice is this: figure out what matters most to you in life, think about the things you've done and how you have really influenced people around you. If you can look back on what you've done and smile, then you're set. It's true that we can never truly evade death and one day, we'll all kick the bucket, but personally, as long as i know that i made other people's lives a little better from knowing me, i feel that i'm content with whatever will come.
This isnt to say that you should embrace death or anything, i'm just saying that if you've had a good life so far and you're happy with how things are, then if you should happen to go, go with a smile, not with fear in your eyes.
of course maybe i'm full of **** , i'm not an army guy or anything so i cant really compare my mortal fears with yours...

It's going to change you. You aren't going to like it. My brother is in the army, and it changed him. He said he went through alot of things while in Afghanistan like being shot at and killing his first man. As long as you are strong, you will get through it. Death is a scary thing for alot of people. You never know what's on the other side, if anything. But you can't let worries get to you, especially out in battle. A distraction like that can get you killed or others killed. You just need to focus on the mission and be strong. Also boot camp is going to suck ass cause I know it did for my bro. Just eat quick and do what you're told. They'll work you till they literally have you vomiting. In the end all this may seem like **** , but it can help you appreciate what you have at home 10x more. My brother learned alot about life in the army, and he really has his **** together now. I see a bright future for him, and it can do the same for you. Good luck dude. I hope you can do us proud.

I always say, if you're right and I'm wrong, at least I tried to live a decent life and tried to spread love and kindness to others, while giving myself peace of mind about my afterlife. All I wasted were Sundays and Wednesday nights.
However, if I'm right and you're wrong, that's gonna be a bad time for you.
Not saying you're wrong, just a saying I like to think on.
If you're really worried, I would go the Life of Pi route. Go to a church, a mosque, a synagogue, etc. Ask the religious figures about their respective religions and learn about them. If one strikes you in your heart as true, then research it more. Start believing. If you just can't believe, then that's your life. hat's just a part of you. I would try praying at least once, though. Take a step towards God, and he will run to you.
I hope you don't mind, but I'll pray for your safe return to your home, as I hope you do the same for me when I go into the army. Have an awesome day.

The way I see it, there are five possible outcomes.
1) Reincarnation
2) Heaven / Hell type thing
3) Wander the universe as a ghost for all eternity
4) Science brings about immortality and death is now optional
5) Truly stop giving a **** for all time.

All of them sound pretty good to me. Fifth least of all, but hey, I'm gonna be dead, so what will I care?

Just think about it this way, if you die, what happens?

You won't just be seeing all black for eternity, because then you would know that you were seeing black. thin about it. when you're dead, do you really know that your dead? Because if your dead then you wouldn't be able to know that your dead. So what will happen to you? Once your dead you won't feel pain, because your dead, that's what really confuses me honestly. If your dead you can't really know that your dead, because well your dead. Would you just see all darkness? No, because you wouldn't realize it. I'm no religious person or anything, but I think that when you die something happens to you. Maybe not heaven or hell, maybe not anything that us humans can think of. But hey we don't know, believe me when I say this. Death is the least of your problems.

Accept Jesus as your truly and only savior.

This is what i truly believe that will give you peace. I'm only saying this beacuse it's from my own experience. I'll not discuss any kind of religion or beliefs. This is what i believe and it was this that make me feel better, and for that, i feel obliged to share, not just with you, but with anyone in need. No religion can give salvation. Only Jesus can. But that's for you to decide. God loves you the same way he loves me or anyone else.
I don't know if what i said made any sense for you or if you give a **** for what i said, but i'd be happy to know that i helped someone have a little more hope, or feel a little happier.
In any case, good luck, thanks for your service, and God bless you \o

Unfortunately, coming to grips with death is like coming to grips with your own sexuality. You just have to figure it out for yourself. I used to freak myself out a lot thinking about what happens when we die, but eventually i realized that death is just as much a part of life as living itself. I'm sorry i can't be more helpful, but i promise you'll understand soon enough.

Look up Noetic Science (an actual science founded by an astonaut) - it bridges the gap between religion and science, and through quantum physics/mechanics, it proves (YES THEY HAVE ACTUALLY PROVEN THIS) that all humans are connected through a Universal Conciousness - which they choose to call God. They have proven that thoughts alone can affect physical matter, and that the power of intention is a lot more powerful than we think - which is why prayer, according to this science, does actually have an impact if you have the right intention.

I keep imagining what my last moments would be like. I ve imagined what death would be like all i see is darkness and when i think of it i m always awake. I cant help but wonder what it d be like after i die. Where my conciousness goes what happens to me if reincarnation is real.
User avatar #1166 to #1165 - vycanismajoris (04/17/2013) [-]
-Why would you be awake, seeing darkness? All your neurons would be dead. You just become nothing. Your molecules may someday become a part of the soil, then some plant, maybe an animal, and maybe a human who ate that animal. I don't think you'll be aware of it, though.
-Why are you joining the army? Do you like it or have no other option?
-Your last moments will probably be when you get old, or when you get shot in combat. In the latter, you either die right away and don't suffer, or you'll live long enough for your mates/maybe family to be with you. You probably won't care for physical pain at that point, because you know you are dying and you don't give a **** /adrenaline acts as a natural painkiller/your teammates take you to a doctor, that gives you an actual painkiller.

This is weird for me to say but, I'm not afraid to die. I don't want to die but if it came to it I would accept it. Just know that if you do die, which everyone will do someday, your mind will clock out and you will be in a better place. Kinda like a dream. Some call this heaven, others call it hell. This is where the concept of afterlife comes from.

I've been Soldiering for 15 years now, 3 vacations in the sand, been personally blown up 12 times and under direct fire more times than I care to think about. I am agnostic as well. Somethings out there just not what man thinks it is as far as I'm concerned. Thinking about your mortality kinda gets tossed out the window after awhile. But no worries, combat rotations are rare nowadays (my last was a 15 month vacation in '08-'09) we only go for 6-9 months and you have to do 2 years between trips. Soldiers are not hard anymore, most of them make me sick thinking they will continue on after I leave. Best advice is don't be a puss, do as your told, Soldier up and live the constitution.
#72 to #34 - anon (04/16/2013) [-]
"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, and they are unjust, you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones." - Marcus Aurelius

If your mortality is starting to trouble you, I'd recommend you start by defining yourself, what you want from your life. Decide who and what is important to you. Death will take you no matter who you are, what you do or what you believe. The only thing you can do is make sure you won't regret the race you ran when you cross the finish line.
Life is too short, but it's still the longest thing we can experience.
Best of luck to you in the armed forces. Stay sharp, stay safe.

i always thought this way too. if you're a good person all your life, but you don't believe in God, or any religion, a fair God should still allow you to go to heaven (or whatever you believe). But i asked my christian friend this very question and he said it doesn't matter how good of a person you are all your life, if you haven't accepted Jesus as your savior there's no way you can go to heaven. I was blown away by this that a person would even want to believe in a God who gets butthurt if you don't believe in him but have done nothing but good all your life. If anything that should make it more noble, having done all those acts without expecting anything in return.

I would probably consider myself Christian. My view on it is just to try to be a good person, live a decent life and most of all be happy and make/let other be happy too. There should be one super commandment. "Don't be a cunt"
#153 to #140 - tomthehippie (04/16/2013) [-]
When Jesus was asked "What are the greatest laws that God has given us" he replied with, "Love God, for if you love him you will not sin against him. Love each other, for if you love each other, you will not sin against each other."

His last command to his followers before going to heaven was to love one another.

So, yeah, basically there is a commandment of "Don't be a cunt". Unfortunately, many Christians skipped that passage.

It seems an unfortunate majority of christians like to skip everything that would put them in the wrong. Makes me happy when I find a person from any religion that pays attention to the parts that really matter.
#962 to #961 - tomthehippie (04/17/2013) [-]
The problem with any faith is that you always get people who twist it for their own ends. Either for their own goals, to fight against something they dislike, or simply because it makes them "matter".

One of my old churches used to really make me angry, because the pastors loved to take pot shots at Buddhism. Too many churches are like this.

Then there is the (unfortunate) insistence so many have that sense they believe something, it should be part of the law.

Nope, try again. My faith is a personal matter. If someone wants to talk to me about it, I'm more than happy to share, but my faith dictates only MY actions, NOT yours.

I wish more people understood that. Many Christians make me ashamed to call myself such.

At least the new pope seems to know what's up, what with deciding not to live inside the Grand Palace that I'm sure Jesus would have agreed with sinking fortune upon fortune into and etcetera.

Of course the Catholic Church hiding pedo's and rapists is nothing new.

Not only should there be a commandment, it should be carved somewhere every human being has to see it every day. Like in the bathroom mirror. Every time you go to shave or brush your teeth, it'd be right there.
"DON'T BE A DOUCHE."

Most Christian denominations are against it, being Catholic and going to a Jesuit school I have learned to be open to the equality of all peoples no matter what it says in the Bible. The other Christian sects take the Bible literally which is their greatest fault.

I personally don't think being gay is right, but I do believe that they should still be treated with love. There is no reason to hate a person for the simple fact that they're gay. You're not supposed to hate anyone. Jesus said love everyone... That includes everyone, all people, every single person, as well as everyone and everyone else.

Treating your neighbor as you would want to be treated includes ALL men and women, regardless of faith, gender, race, beliefs, etc.

The world needs love and compassion, not cruelty and prejudice, and while the Bible is clear on its stance with homosexuality, that doesn't mean Christians (like myself) have the right to step on others.

I have gay and bi friends and they respect me just like I respect them. Many have asked why I'm so nice to them despite my faith. To be honest, I never really thought about it that much for the longest time. I just treat all people right and their sexual preference is, to me, an afterthought. Besides, It breaks my heart seeing homosexuals treated like dirt because I know that they want to be accepted no less than I would want to be.

It's hard to try to convince the world that the Bible teaches compassion and not hatred, but it takes effort to prove that preconception wrong. All I can do is live my own life as a positive example, and one way to start is to show the gays that they are loved and they are accepted, even by people who don't agree with their lifestyle.

The Catholic Church is NOT against being homosexual. You can't help whether you are or not, thats just who you are. You are not removed from the Church or anything, you are just like everyone else. They are only against gay marriage, due to the fact that it has always been since the beginning of time a union between man and woman. Do not hate on Christians without knowing the facts. We are not all like Westboro, they are a cult. Find out what Christianity is really about before you bash it.
#1079 to #925 - anon (04/17/2013) [-]
A lot of other Christian sects (WBC) are against gays which is a shame because then a lot of people would view Catholicism as having the same (verging on elitist) beliefs

(Take time to actually read my comment before you thumb it down please)

Divorce isn't a controversial topic for Christians. We all generally accept it's a sin, it's not like that's any big issue for us.

"Love" does not mean "accept and tolerate other people's sin". Jesus addresses this directly.

Take the passage of John chapter 8. Starting from verse 4,

they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said this to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you ibe the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

"...go, and from now on sin no more.”
God doesn't want us condemning others for their sin, no. But he doesn't tolerate sin either.
