Ligers and tigons are two very different hybridizations, so you can't really combine the two. Since a liger is a cross between a male lion and a female tiger, it's massive. Male lions have a growth promoting gene while female lions have a growth inhibiting gene, which act together to create normal-sized offspring. Since there was no female lion, there was only the growth-promoting gene passed on without the inhibiting, making the liger grow to be huge. A tigon is much more rare and much smaller because of the opposite gene effect. They look totally different.

Clarification: tigons grow to be comparable in size to a pure lion or tiger. They are not a "miniature" version because it works out that the male tiger growth gene can compete with the female lion inhibiting gene.

Thank you. I was gonna post this. Glad I checked the comments first.

Ligers also grow so massive (Tigers being the larges cat, and Lions having that crazy hormone) that they can't support their own weight, and have many problems, due to being a half ton cat.

They're also fertile... though I don't know how stable the genes are.. I'm sure not very. A Lion and Tigon create a Litigon.. this was news to me, haha.

I read about this a while ago, and if i remember, it may be extinct now? but it was supposed to have a blue/purple tinge to it

mind you i may be wrong.
#13 to #5 - anon (04/16/2013) [-]
They aren't extinct because nobody knows if they even exists.

Not a single zoo in the world has a Maltese tiger, Nobody have reported that they have seen one in since 1910.

The Maltese tiger, or blue tiger, is a reported but unproven coloration morph of a tiger, reported mostly in the Fujian Province of China.

I wonder if they went through a period of racism. The original tiger would look at the white one a be like, "You're not a real tiger! You're a Polar Bear! Get the **** outta my neighbor hood!" And the white tiger goes, "Come on man! Don't judge by my fur!"

Tiglons and Ligers are actually not the same. A Tiglon is the offspring of a male Tiger and a Lioness. A Liger is the offspring of a Tigress and a male Lion.

Although this difference may seem trivial, it does show differences in phenotype. Tiglons are smaller than normal Tigers and Lions, while Ligers are larger than either of their parent species.
